How do I get this onto my Phone/iPad/Computer?
With your iPad or iPhone click on the full size ‘Original’ link below then tap and hold, to Save the image to your device. Quick & Simple! If you are on your computer, just rightclick on the image above and select ‘Original’

Why is this larger than the resolution of the Phone/iPad/Tablet?
It is recommend that wallpaper be created as a square image, larger than the resolution of a device (iPad is 2048x2048) so that the image is not stretched/distorted when rotating the device into portrait or landscape.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

Polaroid #1

My first Polaroid upload from my recently acquired SX-70. Taken this morning in Dockey Woods, which is very near two of my favourite subjects - The Oak Tree and That Spooky Tree.

(not my first polaroid shot, that was at the spooky tree finale which I've yet to upload).

Massively frustrating and expensive experience (7/10 came out blank, or mangled, or with half the surface emulsion stripped away. And half-way through the pack it stopped working, had to clean gunk off the rollers). But I can sort of see the appeal. Just wish I'd bought film when it was cheap, or at least less expensive...

Uploaded so I could join in 'Roid Week 2010

Comparison of dust and oil spots, D7000

Some cool change background image images:

Comparison of dust and oil spots, D7000
change background image
I briefly owned a Nikon D7000 but found large spots appearing on my images. I discovered that oil was being flicked on to the sensor when the shutter fired.

A small number of D7000 users have had similar problems and have lengthy sagas to relate about the trouble getting the problem fixed.

The problem is disbelief at Nikon service centres and equal disbelief (often delivered in an ill-mannered fashion) by Nikon fans online. Nothing is perfect and a few misbehaving D7000s may not turn out to be a big issue, but the way the owners of these cameras are treated most certainly is. It is ungracious for them to be accused of negligent use, allegedly resulting in dust contamination, when they are innocent victims.

I thought that this pair of images might better illustrate the difference between dust on a sensor and oil spots. The images were taken at similar apertures, f8 at the top and f6.3 at the bottom.

The top image was taken with a Pentax K10. It was about three years old when the shot was taken and had 40,000 shutter actuations, numerous lens changes and considerable mucky field use. The sensor has never been wet-cleaned (actually never cleaned at all except the occasional puff of air). A few small dark spots can be seen (two are arrowed) and smaller ones do show at higher apertures. They appear anywhere on the image.

The bottom image was taken by a four week old Nikon D7000 which had about 800 shutter actuations. The camera had the same lens attached over the four week period so absolutely zero lens changes. The spots are larger, rounded and predominantly appear at the bottom right (i.e. there's a bias to where they appear, not randomly like dust). I have arrowed a few but you may well see some others that form a stream of splashes running diagonally up and right. A real challenge to 'Photoshop' out due to their size. Also, bear in mind that the image was taken at f6.3 so avoiding high apertures is not going to work. Yet this hardly credible suggestion has been posted in the forums. What is the point of having aperture rings on lenses if we're told to not go beyond f5.6 or something?

I am aware that the bottom image may appear dim on some monitors (I edited the image on a Mac with a bright screen) but hopefully the spots will show up. Click on it to get a view against a dark background.

Copying this image? Please do and show to anyone you like, especially service technicians. They keep saying that haven't seen this before...repeatedly.

I hope this settles the argument but I am not counting on it (actually, by spring 2012 it seems that the problem is now widely acknowleged; it seems only Nikon has never openly written about it). Intelligent feedback welcome; unhelpful remarks may be deleted.

How to improve contrast
change background image
Here is a cool little trick for you Photoshoppers that I happened across. When you have photos that need more contrast, be they people, flowers, or whatever, here is a simple fix.
Make a duplicate copy of your background. Go to Image, Adjust and De-Saturate the copy. Now change the blending mode of the copy from Normal to Soft Light. And you are done.
Normally that is all it takes and I've used this many times. On this particular photo, as you can see by the leaves the whole photo darkens a bit so I lost that pretty yellow color on the stem. Not a problem I just used the eraser tool with a soft brush on the copy and got it back.

THE BUTTERFLY IS JUST A BUG ...

... the background music is from The Tex-Czechs album of Paul & Lina Hybner. Paul and Lina were the musical entertainment for Michele's birthday party and agreed to let me use their music as background for my slide-shows. Here's the link to their website ...

www.hybners.com

... They have one polka on this album dedicated to their dog, PeeGee or as he has now come to be called The Peege and we're planning a best canine friend and family slide show in the future. If you would like to include your loyal friend, send me a JPEG and I'll be sure and include him or her.

...this is just another Dada, nonsense, fun and hopefully entertaining slide show with some art work I'm inviting you to view and have whatever feelings you are programed to have about it. Art is about you and no one else. In art, nothing is right or wrong, good or bad; there are simply differences. Just the simple juxtaposition of looking up at someone or looking down on them, which is even a part of our language, makes the other person different and that's the way it is with art, so no titles, no narratives, just images with background music. I could change the music to one of Lina's ballads and it would change the perception of the images. Your job in this is simply to respond, which could be anything from a "play it again" to a prompt "delete" and whatever you do is not mean or kind, good or bad, it's just the way it is. It's a lot like "no-fault" insurance.

...even the name has no meaning, of course the butterfly is a bug, we knew that.

Some cool photo lights images:

Self Portrait! ...................Not
photo lights
An experiment in the shopping mall today: this was part of a lighted sign panel about 5' wide and 12' tall. The model's smile ran across about 3 1/2 feet. Without a flash, the intense illumination of the sign from the interior light lit it up so much I just had to try for a shot to see what would happen.

Below this photo in my stream, I'll insert a photo of my original I worked from. (It's private since it's just for example.) Of course I think that I improve both on nature and the original photograph, ha ha! A look at a large or original size will reveal a few tiny areas where I was trying to get rid of the reflected lights from across the walkway. It would have taken me another 1/2 hour to get all those reflections out, since it was a shiny acrylic panel. This is a generic ad promoting all the fashions for sale in the mall stores. Oh, and I guess a "reminder" that women are supposed to be going for pale, glossy lips this time of year.

Umaid Bhawan Palace - view LARGE

Umaid Bhawan Palace - view LARGE

3 image panorama of the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace. Unfortunately I did not have a tripod, so the 3 images were shot hand held.
Note to self : Always carry a tripod :)

Umaid Bhawan Palace, located at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, is one of the world's largest private residences. A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present Maharaja of Jodhpur, this monument has 347 rooms and serves as the principal residence of the Jodhpur royal family.

Umaid Bhawan Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to its location on Chittar Hill, the highest point in Jodhpur. Ground for the foundations of the building was broken on 18 November 1929 by Maharaja Umaid Singh and was construction work was completed on 1943.

Built on the Chittar Hill in southeastern area of the Jodhpur, construction employed more than 5000 men for fifteen years. The building does not use mortar or cement to bind stones together; all of its pieces are carved stones joined together by a system of carved interlocking of positive and negative pieces. A specially constructed train line was used to transport these large blocks of stone. Umaid bhavan is designed in such a manner that it always maintains the temperature at approximately 23 degrees Celsius.
The palace grounds cover 26 acres (10.5 ha), out of which the constructed area covers 3.5 acres (1.4 ha) while 15 acres (6.1 ha) are devoted to the lawns.

Designed by renowned Edwardian architect Henry Lanchester, the palace is a blend of eastern and western architectural influences. The building's prominent central dome, a majestic 105-foot (32 m) high cupola, is influenced by the Renaissance, while the towers draw inspiration from Rajput tradition. The project was to cost the Maharaja Rs 94,51,565. The resident engineer for this project was Hiranand U. Bhatia. The interiors for the palace were designed by Maples of London, however, in 1942 the ship transporting them was sunk by the Germans. As a result, the Maharaja employed the services of a Polish interior designer. The lavish interiors with gilt furniture and elegant artwork follow the Art Deco style, complemented by the exotic murals of the self-exiled Polish artist Stefan Norblin. The new Chittar Palace was a fitting tribute to its ancestor, the imposing and majestic Meherangarh Fort, which was built by Rao Jodha and never invested by force of arms.

1955 Pulitzer Prize, Photography, John L. Gaunt, Los Angeles Times

April 2, J 954. Los Angeles Times photographer John Gaunt lounges in his front yard in Hermosa Beach, Calif., enjoying the sun. Suddenly, a neighbor calls out. "There was some excitement on the beach," says Gaunt. "I grabbed a RoIIeiflex camera and ran."

Down by the water, Gaunt finds a distraught young couple by the shoreline. Moments before, their 19-month-old son was playing happily in their yard. Somehow, he wandered down to the
beach. He was swept away by the fierce tide.

The little boy is gone. There is nothing anyone can do. Gaunt, who has a daughter about the same age, takes four quick photographs of the grieving couple. "As I made the last exposure,
they turned and walked away" he says. The little boys body is later recovered from the surf.

I love soft lights as well, but they're easier to contrlo if they're close. There is a massive problem with putting the light very close to the subject. We (all?) know the light that falls on a subject is proportional the square of he distance between it and the light source. If your light is 100cm from the subject and by just moving a bit, the subject moves back a bit, say another 50 cm, well all of a sudden your light is 1/2, not f/7.1 but f/4. That's the reason why we buy very powerful flashes and put them 5m away, the light difference between 5m and 5.5m is much smaller than betwen 1m and 1.5m. Boy, 12 years of engineering ought to count for something!

Songkarn Festival or Happy Thai New Year...

The word “Songkran” means move or change so this festival is the period that the sun moves close to our earth and all southeastern people regard this time as their new year. Moreover, this period is also the harvest season.

There are three days for this festival

First day is called Songkarn day, the last day of the year. People will clean their home to welcome the coming new year.

Second day is Wan Nao. People will bathe the Buddha image and all children will Rod-nam-dum-hua (pour water on the hands of revered elders and ask for blessing) their parents. Furthermore, they believed that saying the rough word on that day will bring the bad luck.

The last is Payawan Day , the beginning day of New Year. People will make merit for their happiness. In the north, they will bring a timber to prop the big tree for their long life. All male and female teenagers will water each other for removing all bad things. This is only one day that they will meet each other, doing activities at the temple together.
