I uploaded this photo a couple days ago, but took it down because I decided that the shadows were too harsh against the black background. So I reedited it to soften the shadows and highlights, and have now reposted it.

This is a stalk of yellow and red blossoms that were in my front yard last spring. I don't know what plant this is.

Mostly uploaded as an excuse to use a pun I hadn't thought of last time.

This time there is no mystery though: The fire hydrant had sprung a leak, and for at least a month it was sending a rivulet of water down Huron St. The city finally got around to digging up the sidewalk and fixing it.

Uploaded for the Portrait Party.

March 15th will be the third and final anniversary of my Daily Portrait Project, in which I've made a non-photographic self-portrait every day and posted it on the web. To celebrate I'm throwing a Portrait Party - instead of drawing myself I'm going to draw other artists.

If you'd like to be one of the artists I draw, please join this group & start a discussion thread with some photos of yourself: www.flickr.com/groups/portraitparty/ I hope to draw at least the first 30 artists to post photos.

It would be great if you also want to draw me and/or the other artists who have posted photos of themselves, but its not required. However, although I'm not actually starting on this project for another couple days many of the other artists have already gone gang-busters. It's a load of fun, so check it out!

Well, for three years I've taken pictures of myself to draw from on at least a weekly basis- so here's a few more for the party.

These were all taken with the video cam in my computer so the resolution isn't that great but they're pretty sharp. Some with my absolute favorite hat, and some with no hat.

*********************************************************************************************

Surfers Paradise doesn't look too much like a tourist destination from this shot, [apart from the Metre Maids!] with the building site so prominent. These girls are employed by the Gold Coast City Council to put money in parking metres for tourists. I guess so that they are made to feel welcome and don't encounter parking fines while holidaying in Surfers Paradise.
Not a very clear shot but I thought the subject matter made it worth uploading.

Wormsloe, the Endless Forest of Savannah - 16,000 pixels wide!

My Biggest Photo Ever and Flickr can't handle it
The TIFF of the photo below is 984 megs, and the JPG is 124 megs! It's about 16,000 pixels across and very fun to zoom in on as you go down the lane. I dropped it to 12,000 pixels so I could upload, but, I feel a little short-changed!

You can see the Original Size below...

I wish Flickr would offer a premium subscription where I could post huge photos. I'd gladly pay 0 a year for a premium subscription that gets me all sorts of extra features, like big photos, high quality videos like my Vimeo sub, tier 1 tech support, and all sorts of other goodies.

Another Forest Photo, Hanging at HQ of Flickr Competitor

The fine people at Smugmug (see my port there at stuckincustoms.smugmug.com/) have chosen my Bamboo Forest photo to hang inside their headquarters in California. They are actually building a 60" lightbox behind it. I'll see it in person in a few weeks when I go visit the crew there. I'm looking forward to it!

Daily Photo - Wormsloe, the Endless Forest of Savannah
My friend Scott Kublin (who made it to my Favorites page on my iPhone... he was at the bottom, but I just moved him up above the babysitter) lives in Savannah, so it was good to visit him on my little road trip. He commented that regular visitors to Stuck In Customs would probably like to see current shots while I am traveling around! So, here it is! However, this one took about 3-4 hours to edit, five cups of coffee, and several pieces of pie. Did you see my little "Buy Trey Chocolate For Energy" there in the right column? Yes, I burn through copious calories to create these things. This one almost broke my back, but I am very happy with it.

Some of you may remember this place from Forest Gump... A lot of it was shot down in Savannah. Besides Wormsloe, I also visited some amazingly moody cemeteries, draped in mossy trees. I'll get to editing those photos another time... maybe when I get back home to Texas!

This is one of the areas where the French kept Marie Antoinette in the conciergerie. There were many mysterious parts of these chambers, and this was one of the most interesting.

I one time designed a set of stairs like this back in the day with a Quake level editor. There was a website where you could upload your creations that could be shared by other level designers. I uploaded my stairs, but I don't know if they were ever used or not. I thought I saw them in E1M4, but then I realized that those stairs were actually 5x better than mine.

Approaching Grand Central Station in the Rain
image upload
Daily Photo - Approaching Grand Central Station in the Rain
Rainy nights in cities pose a tough problem. Really, in many ways, you have to fight against every natural human instinct to go out into the rain on purpose. It's so easy just to want to stay inside, make a hot cocoa (or, a think Aztec Drinking Chocolate in my case), watch a movie, be all cozy, etc etc. But the little photographer inside of you also knows how interesting things are out there!

So, I tend to compromise, and force myself to go outside half the time and stay inside half the time. This occasion in New York City was obviously one of the times I went out in the rain.

You can see I am approaching Grand Central Station -- and that is the famous Chrysler Building in the background. This was shot with the Nikon 14-24 Lens (See my Nikon 14-24 Review). It's an expensive lens, so if you are looking for something cheaper that also takes great wide-angle shots, check out the Sigma 10-20mm (Review coming some day when I mysteriously get more time).
My Sprint 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot is Pretty Crappy
So, I was going to either get the Verizon MiFi or this Sprint 4G Mobile Hotspot thing... I needed a fast mobile connection that I could use on the road instead of depending on coffee shops or hotel rooms. I could not decide which one to get, and in the end, I opted for the Sprint one because I thought the 3G would be equal to the MiFi but the 4G would be better where I had coverage. What I've learned (briefly):

The 4G is better if the area has 4G. Austin does, so that is nice.
I've since traveled to Plano, Dallas, and Orlando, none of which could pick up a 4G signal
So, instead it connects at 3G - it is glacially slow!

It says "3G", but I think it is lying... because it seems 10x slower than my iPhone alone
I have run it on Speedtest.net many times. Half the time, it is to slow to even load the site, much less measure it! When it does run, it shows about 0.09 mb/s. I might as well be on Prodigy
Don't believe anything can be that slow? See this img.skitch.com/20100526-kb64r8x1mydqj9aq3puacywtt7.jpg!
Before, I had used Cali Lewis' MiFi and it was very fast - must faster than this Sprint black hole of bandwidth

It gets very hot. Very very hot.
The battery only lasts about 2 hours. That is pretty lame, really. Even when you have it plugged in via USB, it appears to drain faster than it charges.
When I use it for a few hours, the Internet stops working... It requires a reboot of the device. This has happened to me 4 times now.

Photo-Posting While Travelling Tip
As you know, I put up a new photo every day here on the blog. This is hard both from a processing standpoint, since these can take anywhere from 20 mins to several hours to produce. It's also hard logistically because I've got to get everything uploaded and into its place before posting!

So, I've taken to uploading 10-20 photos to SmugMug (see my SmugMug Review) at a time before a trip. I go in an "Hide" the photos. That way, I can just go online and "Unhide" them when I get ready to make the daily post. This seems to be a good solution.

Mission San Juan

Kind of a late upload but I just got back from the Tiesto concert here in San Antonio :) Now I have 3 hours before I have to wake up for school :(

The missions are something new to me for the most part. I went to Mission San Jose as I was kid for a field trip back in Elementary but like most on the trip all we cared about was not being in school. Now that I'm older and free to drive where ever and when ever I find that I'm just to lazy to go far. Sure I'll drive 1/2 hr away but I do that everyday for school and work and it gets boring after a while. Having to drive an hour to get to these missions seems crazy to me but I find that I must in order to photograph something new.

The things I do to satisfy my hunger for HDR...

Sesan in the Morning

I've been uploading a lot of photos of the Sesan River recently, for no reason other than my job has taken me up there quite a bit. The Se San is way up in the Northeast Corner of Ratanakiri, near the Virachey National Park and the Dragon's Tail (that's what the remote upper Northeast corner of Cambodia is called—I guess it kinda looks like a dragon's tail?). Last week I spent nearly the whole week up on the Se San.

Here's a shot of the Sesan during the cool of the morning. I was supposed to meet a Kreung man, and snapped some pics while I was bored as I waited for him to show up.

Unboxing Day
photo upload
Before Christmas I had a bit of a tidy and found this lot, not actually in a box I must confess but in a bag - I guess this should really be captioned Unbagging Day.
I reckon there are 400-500 photos in total, mainly snapshots and real photo postcards, but quite a few larger sized prints, and the odd cabinet card and carte de visite. I have a feeling it started off as one fairly large batch that I must have acquired with other more notable images, and then over time when I've had odd photos and small batches that I thought I'd "look at later" I just threw them in.

This photo shows about the half way stage whilst roughly sorting them into topics - portraits, family groups, babies, transport, buildings, landscapes, houses and gardens, weddings ...

There's also a small pile of images that caught my eye that I'll be uploading to my new Snapshots of the past set, inspired by the 'Peculiar Snapshots' set from unexpectedtales.

The two piles front-left are still to be sorted, and I have a horrible feeling that there are at least as many more in various boxes in the loft!

I should stress that none of these are of my own family - they're all found photos.

The End of my D40
upload photos
Well, this is my first D90 photo uploaded. It seemed fitting to begin by telling the tale of why I have a D90 in the first place.

It was Halloween night, and I was spending time with friends. At a couple of minutes after 9:40 I got a call from work. Apparently there wasn't anyone at the TV station to direct the 10:00 news. Normally the director has been there for a while and has all the graphics assembled at this point and is marking show scripts to ensure all goes well. I told them I would be there, packed up my things quickly and was off for my car. While on the way to my car in a rush the D40 w/16mm fisheye as shown above fell out of my camera bag. I was running, and failed to snap my camera bag shut.

I walked back to it, ill concerned, and picked it up, flash sticking up. I tried to fire a quick test-shot, and didn't hear the mirror move. I was wondering what was up at this point, I expected the silly thing to work after falling on the concrete at a running pace. I checked the screen and was surprised that it was working (I expected that to be bad). It just said the flash is in TTL mode, switch to M. I put the flash down, again, expecting the camera to work. I got a yellow ! with, "Error, press shutter release button again"

I ignored it and was on the road.

Half-way there I called to work and asked them to do something simple for me to put us 4 minutes ahead, and it turns out the director showed up. He got caught in some sort of traffic or something. I wasn't mad till this point. I spent about 2 minutes fuming, because I ruined my D40 running to work to cover a shift I didn't end up overing.

I threw it aside and decided it wouldn't ruin my night. And it didn't.

The next day I picked it up and played around with it. Aside from the obvious body damage visible here, nothing in the viewfinder lights up. There were some scuffs on the lower left of the back too. The glass was untouched, to my surprise, but the metal hood took a little scrape. I tried to do a mirror lockup for sensor cleaning, and them my yellow ! became a red !. I haven't tried to disassemble the thing yet, but I intend to. I'm sure the AF is all sorts of out of calibration, the metering doesn't appear to be working, it won't tell an AF-S lens to AF, but the menu systems and playback work perfectly.

That's the tale.

I made it to play with my daughter, because figuring out how to do those X's was oh-so-much easier than grabbing a pencil and sheet of paper.

Seriously, though, it took a long time to get the X's, and they're still not perfect. Good enough for a 4-year old, though. They needed to be at a 45 degree angle and then line up enough with the square so that any jagged edges could be covered with a tile, but the tile still had to have enough solid brick studs to attach on firmly.

Oh, and every single piece is attached! Nothing is free floating at all (well, not counting the fact that the squares are removable for playing the game). Those guys over at twee affect would be so proud. ;-)

P.S. The whole time I was trying to figure out the X's, I kept thinking there was probably a very obvious way to do it, and I was just too blind to see it...

Hampton Springs Hotel Ruins, Florida
upload photos
I uploaded four photos of this park. I have repeated my entire explanation on all four photos, since I doubt that many people will look at more than one of them.

In 1908 a luxury hotel was built over a natural spring. The sulfur-rich spring water was channeled through concrete pools on the ground floor of the hotel. The water was believed to have healing powers.
In 1954 the hotel burned to the ground; the hotel was not rebuilt and the property was not re-developed.

Now Taylor County has developed the location into a park. The ruins of the hotel are visible and the spring water still flows through the concrete pools.

There is a bridge over Spring Creek which leads to a short nature trail. There is potential to find some interesting wildlife here because the entire 12-mile distance sw to the Gulf of Mexico is undeveloped wetlands.

Park has no admission charge. There are restrooms and picnic tables.

HAMPTON SPRINGS HOTEL

The Hampton Springs Hotel was built in 1908 and was destroyed by fire in 1954. The hotel was world renowned for its sulphur springs and baths known for their healing and medicinal powers. The luxurious hotel boasted lush gardens with elaborate fountains by the springs, a golf course, tennis courts, stables, casino, grand ballroom, outdoor dance pavilion, and railroad depot. The nine-hole golf course was amoung the first in the region. The hotel had its own bottling plant and shipped the healing sulphur water nationwide. It also had its own power plant and the majority of the food served in the dining room was grown and raised at the hotel farm. The hotel had a private hunting and fishing lodge on Spring Creek six miles from the hotel site and an excursion boat with a covered launch. From the mid 1930s to mid 40s the hotel served as barracks for military personnel testing aircraft at Perry-Foley Airport in nearby Perry. Archaeological excavations here revealed the formation of the hotel and outbuildings.

Cumulonimbus and Lionel Brett council houses, south Hatfield, Herts.

This northerly view from the back of my childhood house was taken when I was a teenager and starting to get interested in meteorology. I grew up on this council estate in south Hatfield which was built in 1956. It was designed by architect Lionel Brett (who became 4th Viscount Esher), and was innovative in that the terraced houses curved around the contours of the land in a series of sinuous crescents. They were warm and cosy and had sizeable gardens compared with modern-day council housing. The main distinctive feature was the low-angle single-pitch roof, constructed from timber overlain with aluminium cladding. Each terrace had a single modular roof extending over its entire length.

Unfortunately this design approximated to a crude aerofoil section which was spectacularly demonstrated during a severe gale on the night of 3rd-4th November 1957 when virtually all the houses facing in a westerly direction had their entire roof length lifted clean off and flung for distances of up to a 100 metres away. In this photo, the houses visible in the lower left all lost their roofs, which ended up in the gardens to the right. The houses which faced east (of which ours was fortunately one) were unaffected, as the 'leading edge' of the roof section was not facing into the wind.

I was 5 years old at the time and yet still clearly remember the screaming noise of the wind and the banging and clattering that went on. In those days, the street lighting was automatically switched off at midnight, so all this took place in pitch darkness in the early hours. In the morning when daylight came, I still remember the words of my father as he looked across the road at the houses opposite "I don't know - there's something funny about the houses across the street.... Christ, there's no bloody roofs on them!" And so it was - you could see daylight through the upstairs windows all along the street.

Altogether, over 50 houses were affected and lost their roofs. In those days hardly anyone had a telephone in the house; there was a long queue of people outside the callbox at the end of the street, waiting to phone the council. Amazingly, there were no fatalities and, as far as is known, not even any injuries - quite remarkable when you consider that great sheets of aluminium must have been flying around during the night - could have had your head off in no time.

The subsequent investigation and public enquiry found that in some cases the roofs had not been adequately fixed to the house walls. In the months that followed, repairs were made and structural improvements involving additional strong steel fixing brackets were installed.

The photo was taken 10 years after the event and there is no sign of what had occurred. I continued to live in the house until 1973 and there was never any further storm damage during that time. But to this day I still get jittery during gales.

Sorry about the wonky photo - I didn't hold the camera very straight when I took this, and to have cropped it after straightening would have entailed losing too much picture area.

Taken with an old Kodak bellows camera on 120 roll film and scanned from a print.
