In this image, the thirsty supplicant approaches one of the the tanker farms that my sister operates in support of indigent hummingbirds under a grant from the National Sugar Trust.

Strobist info: I put a YN560-II on a stand to the right of the feeder at 4 o'clock, and a YN560 on a light stand to the left of the feeder at 8 o'clock to throw some light on the hummer. I used an exposure that allowed some ambient light to appear in the image. The strobes were in manual mode and were triggered by a Yongnuo RF=603N.

Fire In The Mountains No Lightning in The Air

This image taken at 8:31pm 09-06-10. The Fourmile wildfire began on Labor day at 10:00am at FourMile Canyon Road near Emerson Gulch west of Boulder, the fire has been driven by high winds, closed Highway 19, on both sides between Boulder and Nederland with the wildfire heading northeast. Also reported, fire ash is falling in Boulder.

The fire has reportedly already burned several structures and a fire truck that responded to the fire. Responding to fire several air tankers. residents within a 4 mile radius were asked to evacuate their homes. At this date 3500 acres have burned.

With Saturn in eclipse, the rings show off their colors in this image from Cassini taken on September 3, 2010. I assembled this image from three raw files taken with Cassini's red, green and blue color filters. Some sharpening was applied and the resulting file doubled in pixel size.

At the bottom of the image Saturn's shadow cuts across the rings which likewise form a dark silhouette against the planet's night side, dimly lit by ringshine. Scattered sunlight in Saturn's atmosphere create a bright thin arc along its limb. Stunning!

In this image the parent Barn Owl has just dropped off food to the young Barn Owl on top of the owl box on our property. The young owl hasn't been fed in at least fifteen hours and it's been screeching for food impatiently every since it came outside about twenty minutes earlier. The owls only come out and hunt (or wait for a delivery) after the sun has set.

Strobist info: Here's the description of the setup that I use for photographing the Barn Owls, and the owl house.The owl house is on top of a fifteen foot pole, which is about two feet in the ground, so the bottom of owl house is about thirteen feet off of the ground. I have one tall light stand on either side of the owl house, extended as high as they will go, and a third shorter light stand in the middle. The one on the left is lower because it is positioned on a slope that goes down from the house. The light stand in the middle is a shorter stand than the others, but it is extended as high as it will go. The flash on the left is a YN560, the middle flash is a Strobie 130 and the flash on the right is a YN560-II. All thee strobes are in manual mode set at 1/2 power. The middle and right flash are triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603 and the left flash is in slave mode and is triggered by the light from the other two flashes. I have a Yongnuo RF-603-N trigger on my camera which is triggered by an identical trigger that I have in my hand while sitting in a chair off camera. The Yongnuo triggers can act as either transmitter or receiver. The great thing about these triggers is that they are reliable, and are about for a pair of them on Amazon. Wonderful technology at an amazing price. They're cheap, they work and they have a range of 15 meters.

Encircling Saturn's north pole is a narrow channel of 300-plus mph winds that's maintained a hexagonal shape over time. Astronomers aren't exactly sure what causes this phenomenon but it may be a natural occurrence based on the physics of a rapidly moving atmosphere.

UPDATE: geometric shapes associated with large areas of powerful winds are not only found on Saturn...even on Earth hurricanes can exhibit some interesting formations. Read more on The Planetary Society's blog: www.planetary.org/blog/article/00002563/

This image was taken by the Cassini spacecraft in February 2009 as Saturn was moving toward its spring equinox and its north pole was getting more and more illumination by the sun. (I colored the original black and white image using a color palette taken from other true-color calibrated images of Saturn.) The top half of the image is the rest of Saturn's north pole, hidden in winter shadow.

In addition to part of the hexagon many other smaller storms and eddies can be seen in Saturn's dynamic atmosphere.
