Tutorial - Poor Man Side Flash

Suppose you want to take a photo of something with a side light, but all your strobes are not available and you have only the small flash of the camera.
What to do?
Here is a quick solution, assuming you can find at least a sheet of paper and some duct tape.
Cut a small paper rectangle, a bit larger than the camera flash, and attach it in front of the camera flash with a piece of tape. The tin foil on the top of flip top cigarettes boxes would be perfect, if you can find it.
Be careful to leave a sort of "wedge" between the flash and the paper, so the light can be reflected, and also be sure to shade all the flash light, or you'll have a brighter band on the side of the photo.
For a better result you can place a piece of cardboard after the paper, to keep it steady and to avoid the light to go across the paper.
Keep the camera with just one hand (using the flash you don't risk to have a shaked photo, because the flash is very fast) and with the other hand keep a sheet on the side of the camera, as shown in the photo.
The light will follow the the red path, reaching the subject from the side.
As you can see, the difference between a photo made with the bare camera flash and another made with the reflector is really impressing!
For "special effects" you can also try colored paper.
The image above says the same things, but at 300dpi it can be printed on A4 paper.

In this shot I believe that the Canon flash battery hadn't cycled and charged up yet giving me a shot with just the Vivitar.
The other day I had what I consider my first "real" photo shoot. A friend's boss needed some portrait shots taken for his business. He occasionally writes articles and he does talks at conventions or seminars so he needed some publicity shots for those events and publications. My friend mentioned that I take a fair photograph so he had me come in last night and take some shots.
I've done some shots at some MCW events, but those are usually one or two quick shots of the wrestlers between matches and not very involved when it comes to time spent with the subject. This time I got to really talk with my subject and feel him out for what he needed and wanted for his shots. It was a interesting experience and fun as well.
All in all, I'm really please at how they turned out. Not too bad, if I do say so myself (and I do) for my first outing as something more than just a hobbyist.
If I recall correctly, I think we took about 70 shots with different backdrops and poses. These three are my favorites of the shots.
