Disney - Epcot - Fountain of Nations

The Fountain of Nations is a musical fountain in the Epcot theme park, designed by Mark Fuller and his team from WET. The fountain contains about 200,000 gallons of water, has about 300 nozzles and can shoot water between 30 and 150 PSI to over 150 feet high.

The original fountain was built in 1982 with the rest of the park. In the dedication ceremony, representatives from 22 nations poured water from their countries into the fountain. In 1993, the fountain was refurbished to perform water shows synchronized to a handful of pieces of music. At night, the fountain illuminates with 1,068 different colored lights. During Epcot's Holidays Around the World celebration, the fountain dances to Christmas music. It is also synchronized with The Lights of Winter archway that is over the bridge connecting Future World and World Showcase.

The fountain has multiple nozzles. There are 212 "microshooters" that shoot water 80 feet into the air, 40 "minishooters" that shoot water at a 70-degree angle 100 feet into the air, and 12 "supershooters", which can shoot water 150 feet into the air. The supershooters have a distinct popping noise due to their use of air pressure for a launching system. There are also 60 spray nozzles. Since the fountain shoots water up to 150 feet into the air, crosswinds often blow mist onto nearby guests.

The fountain plays a variety of music, some of which comes from old Epcot and Walt Disney World attractions. The automated shows are performed on every quarter-hour. The fountain also dances to this music until the park is fully cleared out so people can watch it after the IllumiNations firework show. (The fountain is shut off during the show so as not to interfere with the fireworks.) From November to the end of December, the regular music is played until around 6:00 pm. This is when the Lights of Winter Archway lights up and starts to play holiday music.

The Chicago Theological Seminary Building - The Milton Friedman Institute // Romancing the Stone

Stone and light. The former home of the Chicago Theological Seminary, now home to the Milton Friedman Institute, is a favorite building of mine. Here are a few posts with some more images from this Gothic marvel..Last November, I returned to the city of broad shoulders to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with my family. Having an afternoon to spare, my wife and I met with friends on the campus of the University of Chicago and I took few photographs with my good friend Matt.I convinced him to return to the great limestone cavern of the Chicago Theological Seminary Building. We spent some few happy moments taking in the cold, damp and empty hallways and catching up.There's something about these walls that draws me in whenever I'm near. Perhaps it's the echo of steps upon the worn and weathered staircase, bathed in tungsten light; or perhaps it's the smell of many a word wafting from the underground, labyrinthine bookshelves that line one of the last and greatest independent booksellers in the country; or maybe it's the architect's expression of love for a style long extinct, wrought in ribbons of amber light clinging to the ribs of the close and stoney vault.I had long admired the beautiful and thoroughly abandoned courtyard of the seminary. The flagstones were purple and blue with the damp of the rainstorm and I decided to open one of thegreat leaded glass doors that line the cloister and step out into the grey of a gathering storm.I am going to be leading an awesome photography workshop here on The University of Chicago campus on Saturday, May 26th at 8 AM until 12 noon. I have 10 folks confirmed and registered and another few who have expressed interest. This leaves room for you if you are so inclined. We have a classroom in the awesome Logan Center for the Arts where we will begin by sharing a few thoughts on why great images "work."Then we'll do a few exercises and talk about a few tricks to keep the mind sharp and the eye (and camera!) focused. Then we will get onto the meat of the workshop and take a walking tour of several buildings of immense beauty, focusing on making successful compositions using natural light and the architecture. After shooting for about a few hours we will return to the Logan Center and get into post-processing. I am going to teach the participants exactly how to get the most from their images and generate the beautiful effects you see in my images.Price is 0 - drop a comment or an email to get registered!

An experiment in the shopping mall today: this was part of a lighted sign panel about 5' wide and 12' tall. The model's smile ran across about 3 1/2 feet. Without a flash, the intense illumination of the sign from the interior light lit it up so much I just had to try for a shot to see what would happen.

Below this photo in my stream, I'll insert a photo of my original I worked from. (It's private since it's just for example.) Of course I think that I improve both on nature and the original photograph, ha ha! A look at a large or original size will reveal a few tiny areas where I was trying to get rid of the reflected lights from across the walkway. It would have taken me another 1/2 hour to get all those reflections out, since it was a shiny acrylic panel. This is a generic ad promoting all the fashions for sale in the mall stores. Oh, and I guess a "reminder" that women are supposed to be going for pale, glossy lips this time of year.
