Riders are in the saddle from first light until last, for up to ten days straight, covering at least 100 kms a day in order to complete this epic race, and frequently topping 160kms in a day. They sleep wherever they find themselves at darkfall, either at the morin urtuus themselves, or under the stars, or with local families who take them in. The Mongol Derby is an exercise in going native, and much sign language is practised.

Daily Disney - A Parrot's Life for Me!
image post
Image by Express Monorail
I know, I know... why post this picture when Matt P, Jeff B and Todd H already nailed it and posted their versions, right? Well, I don't know, I just felt good about finally getting this shot. I tried several times both in WDW and DL and for some reason could not get this guy properly focused. In fact, I was able to nail down a few dark ride photos (except for that darn Peter Pan's Flight) that I have failed in the past... Also, I rediscovered Capture NX and used it exclusively (except final resizing and sharpening for Flickr posting) to edit this picture. I bought the program when I bought the D300 and never really got the hang of it. After taking a deeper look into it I can't believe I haven't been using this program all along! Don't get me wrong, I still like my Paint Shop Pro, but at least for RAW editing and converting to tiff, Capture NX works brilliantly with .NEF files! I also like that I can save a compressed copy of the edited .NEF file instead of saving the full size uncompressed 16 or 8 bit .tiff like I was doing before. This cuts the file size down tremendously and allows me to reopen the .NEF file with Capture NX so that I can have access to the full size original edit in the future if I need to. Of course, I always retain the original untouched RAW (.NEF) file just in case.

i’m working on a “rave card” (basically a 4”x6” card) to start handing out to people as a reminder of the tapestry launch that is coming up soon (september 14th). once the “rave card” is finished it will probably also turned into some door hangers and perhaps a billboard for a month.

this is just the first mock up of the front of the card. the back will be full of information. the model for the picture is the daughter of one of our friends/neighbors. as you can tell from the look on her face, she’s fun.

i’m just posting this up here to get a few people’s opinion. any thoughts?

The German Postal Services commissioned in 1961 / 1963 Volkswagen to design them a postal van that would suit their needs.

VW started off with the Karmann produced (Type 151) Beetle Cabriolet as basis for the van due to its strength in build but later turned to the Karmann Ghia (Type 14) for basis as it was wider.

It was agreed Franz Knobel & Sohn GmbH (later called Westfalia Werke) would build the vehicles for VW & the Deutsche Post, Swiss Post Offices & Lufthansa.

Its official name was Volkswagen Type 147 Kleinlieferwagen (small van) but due to its funny and badly proportioned shape it was affectionately called "Fridolin". From 1964 to July 1974, 6139 were produced.

What my camera looked like after this year's Burning Man.

Some cool my photos images:

What my camera looked like after this year's Burning Man.
my photos
Image by mr. nightshade
This was my camera after Burning Man 2009. It saw hard use, taking nearly 3,000 photos over the eight days I spent in the desert. (Here's my Burning Man gallery)

Nothing is exaggerated here: that's just how it looks.

Did I protect it? No. I kept it in its bag when not in use. It's fine and works like a champ.

The lenses and camera have not been cleaned since the burn; I've kind of blown off the sensor a little, but otherwise it's untouched and A-OK.

If you think your camera needs protection out there, you A) need a better camera or B) didn't use yours enough, and either way you didn't take enough photos.

This camera has shot approximately 72,000 photos, and taken at least two ~4' drops to concrete. This was its second Burning Man (as it came out (and was subsequently purchased by me) September 2007).

PLEASE, no multi invitations, glitters or self promotion in your comments. My photos are FREE for anyone to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know. Thanks

Erected in 1858, Cap-des-Rosiers Lighthouse is one of the tall beacons built by the Canadian Coast Guard in Québec. Canada’s tallest lighthouse, it soars 34.1 metres (112 feet) into the air. With white marble walls over 2.1 metres (7 feet) thick at the base and tapering to 0.9 metres (3 feet) at the top of the tower, it stands on a foundation rooted 2.4 metres (8 feet) deep in the soil. Its powerful light, perched 41.4 metres (136 feet) above the sea, has guided ships without fail since the lighthouse was built.

The site has been developed to enhance this magnificent structure, which was declared a national historic site in 1977 by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

BLOW YE WINDS HI HO AWARD ...
edit image
Image by mrbill78636
... just in case. Awards never go to waste. This reminded me of a seagoing song:

"Jack Was Every Inch A Sailor" is a traditional Newfoundland and Labrador folk song. It is a comical retelling of the Jonah tale, with a Newfoundland whaler as protagonist, but in this instance the whale gets his comeuppance.

It may have been adapted from a New York music-hall song "Every Inch a Sailor", which itself was a burlesque of "HMS Pinafore".

[edit] Lyrics

'Twas twenty-five or thirty years since Jack first saw the light,
He came into this world of woe one dark and stormy night;
He was born on board his father's ship as she was lying to,
'Bout twenty-five of thirty miles southeast of Baccalieu.

CHORUS:
Oh, Jack was every inch a sailor,
Five and twenty years a whaler;
Jack was every inch a sailor,
He was born upon the bright blue sea.

When Jack grew up to be a man he went to the Labrador,
He fished in Indian Harbour where his father fished before;
On his returning in the fog he met a heavy gale,
And Jack was swept into the sea and swallowed by a whale.

CHORUS

Oh, the whale went straight for Baffin Bay, 'bout ninety knots an hour,
And every time he'd blow a spray he'd send it in a shower;
Oh, now, says Jack unto himself, I must see what he's about,
He caught the whale all by the tail and turned him inside out.

CHORUS
