Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area (NASA, International Space Station, 02/02/12)

A few nice earth image images I found:

Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area (NASA, International Space Station, 02/02/12)
earth image

Editor's note: "Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin' town / They have the time, the time of their life / I saw a man, he danced with his wife / In Chicago, Chicago..." :) Posted to the NASA Views Earth at Night photoset: www.flickr.com/photos/28634332@N05/sets/72157625188331491/

This nighttime image, photographed by one of the members of the Expedition 30 crew from the International Space Station, features the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area strung along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan. The region is partially covered by clouds, probably low-hanging, or even fog. Meteorologists say there is a fine line between low thin clouds and fog. Fog is not common in the Great Lakes area this time of the year (usually too windy), but this has been an exceptionally mild winter. The faint gold line of airglow -- caused by ultraviolet radiation exciting the gas molecules in the upper atmosphere -- parallels the horizon or Earth limb. Minor auroral activity (Borealis) is visible in upper right.

A Different View of Earth (NASA, International Space Station, 02/28/11)

NASA astronauts Steve Bowen (foreground) and Alvin Drew, both STS-133 mission specialists, participate in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 34-minute spacewalk, Bowen and Drew installed the J612 power extension cable, move a failed ammonia pump module to the External Stowage Platform 2 on the Quest Airlock for return to Earth at a later date, installed a camera wedge on the right hand truss segment, installed extensions to the mobile transporter rail and exposed the Japanese "Message in a Bottle" experiment to space.

Manicouagan Reservoir, Quebec, Canada (NASA, International Space Station, 01/08/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
This photo showing the Manicouagan Reservoir in Quebec, Canada, was photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station. The Manicouagan Reservoir marks the site of an impact crater, 60 miles (100 kilometers) wide, which, according to scientists, was formed 212 million years ago when a meteorite crashed into this area. Scientists say that over millions of years the many advancing and retreating glaciers and other erosional processes have worn down the crater.

Approaching The Refueling Station

Approaching The Refueling Station

In this image, the thirsty supplicant approaches one of the the tanker farms that my sister operates in support of indigent hummingbirds under a grant from the National Sugar Trust.

Strobist info: I put a YN560-II on a stand to the right of the feeder at 4 o'clock, and a YN560 on a light stand to the left of the feeder at 8 o'clock to throw some light on the hummer. I used an exposure that allowed some ambient light to appear in the image. The strobes were in manual mode and were triggered by a Yongnuo RF=603N.

If you like pictures of these tiny terrors you might enjoy my Hummingbirds set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157627149575339/...

Uk Radar Station in deep snow

Uk Radar Station in deep snow

This is a UK Radar Site on the top of a mountain called Great Dun Fell owned by NATS (National Air Traffic Services).
Today our dedicated engineers were on site doing repair and maintenance work. They got a great day for their visit. Despite sub zero temperature and deep snow drifts the sun was shining at the top of the mountain. I persuaded one of our enginers to take a photo. This is the superb result!
I confess this isn't my image but it just needs sharing

A most unusual park over on 17th Avenue NW between NW 62nd-63rd Streets. It's a community project, a Pocket Park, if you will.

The park came together from the combination of two lots, one of which used to be a corner grocery store. Today, an entrance designed to mimic the antique corner store entrance stands at the corner where passing local residents can read about the site’s history.

Toward the south, a few parts of the wall are all that remain of a house that used to sit on the lot; a concrete couch, end table and lounge chair occupy the space now.

MANTEO, N.C. - The town of Manteo honored life saver and civil rights hero Richard Etheridge with a bronze statue which was unveiled Saturday on Roanoke Island.
Etheridge was born into slavery on Roanoke Island in 1842 and went on to become the first African-American in charge of a U.S. Life-Saving Service rescue station. He was in charge of the Pea Island station from 1880 to 1900.
The keynote speaker for the unveiling, Daniel Gardiner, shared the impact Etheridge's work made on his life. Gardiner's uncle and grandparents were among nine people pulled from the wreck of the sailing ship E.S. Newman by the men of the Pea Island rescue station in 1896.
"God bless Richard Etheridge," said Gardiner. "You can see that the appreciation for Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island life savers lives on and actually gets stronger every time I come down here."
The bronze statue was crafted by Stephen H. Smith over the course of 10 months. (U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Kendrick)
