Sorry for the poor quality...I took the picture at night without the flash, with all the lights turned on. I didn't want to get a reflection on the glass. Anyway, it turned out very nicely. I had it framed with a black matte and a simple silver dotted frame around the matte part, and a plain black frame. I love how it turned out.

Cell Phone Collage #1
picture collage
I've never had any luck getting my pictures off of my Motorola v220 cameraphone. I refuse to spend the on a USB cable and software that is going to transfer .4 megapixel photos. Yet, stupidly, I kept USING my cameraphone and when it finally quit working on me last week, I realized I wasn't about to give it up without getting my photos off of it.

The pictures didn't travel on my SIM card to my new phone, so the only thing I could think of to do as a last resort was to take photos OF the photos. Lying my old phone down in the dark and using macro on my Nikon camera, I achieved mixed results, but I think it's the best I'm gonna get. Here's the first set . . .

(left to right, top to bottom)
1) Mom in her BMW Z3 the day I got my phone: September 21, 2004.
2) Sunset at RIT's Raquet Club apartments: September 21, 2004.
3) Joelle & Anna @ Denny's: October 3, 2004.
4) Clouds over the Staples parking lot: October 4, 2004
5) Matt Nathanson in concert at the Waterstreet Music Hall: October 5, 2004
6) Me @ Jay's (photo by Joelle): October 16, 2004.

1964 Goggomobil (03)
picture sizes
Goggomobil was a series of microcars produced in the Bavarian town Dingolfing after World War II by Glas.

Glas produced three models on the Goggomobil platform: the Goggomobil T sedan, the Goggomobil TS coupé, and the Goggomobil TL van. The engine was an air cooled, two stroke, two cylinder unit originally displacing 250 cc, but later available in increased sizes of 300 cc and 400 cc. It had an electric pre-selective transmission built by Getrag and a manual clutch. The engine was behind the rear wheels. Suspension was independent all round using coil springs with swing axles.

214,313 sedans, 66,511 coupés, and 3,667 Transporter vans and pickups were built from 1955 to 1969.

The Goggomobil TS 2+2 coupe was introduced at the 1957 IFMA show alongside the improved T sedan. It was available as the TS250, the TS300, and the TS400, the number reflecting the approximate engine size in cubic centimeters.

The only major design change to the TS coupe was the change from rear-hinged suicide doors to front-hinged conventional doors in 1964.

The TS coupe was always ten to twenty percent more expensive than the T sedan. Total production of TS coupes was 66,511.

L REBOZO
Por Gabriel del Río Ortiz

El rebozo mexicano
se fue a la sierra sin miedo,
rayo de luz en la noche,
virginal azul de incienso.
Terciado por los caminos
que descienden de los senos,
nostalgia de plumas de ave
en el leve rapacejo.
Se fue a la revolución
porque era parte del pueblo
y hacía suyas sus desdichas
y compartía sus anhelos.
El rebozo nunca quiso
vivir con los privilegios,
sino compartir el pan
y la sal del sufrimiento
Un día llegó por los mares:
lo traían en cautiverio,
venía en la Nao de China,
su prisión y su sendero
y brillaban con la luna
los caminos de sus flecos.
Era mantón de Manila
que llegaba a mundos nuevos,
serpientes de cascabel
y peces de cuerpo entero
con escamas relucientes
traía el chal aventurero.
Cien mil gusanos de seda
en un moral le habían hecho
su cuerpo de lluvia fina
y el rocío de sus dedos.
Llegó a hurtadillas, sin ruido,
por el misterioso piélago
y se convirtió en huipil
y en mantilla de paseo,
punto de cruz, chupamirto
y receptor de luceros.
Salió de la alcaicería
en su cajita de cedro,
pero a través de un anillo
pasó su cuerpo primero,
cuerpo dúctil, serpentino,
corporización del viento.
En Santa María del Río
subió a la ermita del cerro
y se entregó a la doncella
el día de su casamiento
y le rodeó la cintura
con sus largos dedos tersos
y le acarició los hombros
y se le prendió en el pecho
El rebozo de bolita
brilló bajo el sol de enero;
se vistió de plata y oro
en el matinal paseo
y presenció los rubores
nacidos del primer beso.
Asistió a la fiesta brava
y también al jaripeo
y en Veracruz se anudó
en mágico zapateo;
fue a salones elegantes
con damas y caballeros
de la rancia aristocracia
del México palaciego.
El aroma de Oaxaca
lo impregnó en caminos viejos
y una ollita de mezcal
lo volvió dicharachero;
luego bailó la sandunga
con ritmo, gracia y salero
y con el son jalisciense
echó sus penas al viento
y se humedeció los labios
con rompope del convento
en Puebla, donde los ángeles
de añil tiñeron al cielo.
Pero no se sintió a gusto
con aquello ajetreos
y prefirió ser abrigo,
cuna y mortaja del pueblo
y compartir sus tristezas
y ser su fiel compañero,
lo mismo al tomar las armas
que al rezar el Padre Nuestro,
en el hambre y la quimera,
en el cruel alumbramiento
y en el callado camino
a reunirse con sus muertos.
Para ese rebozo amigo
es el cincel de mis versos
porque lleva entre sus pliegues
carnes morenas del pueblo
y trenzas bien apretadas
de negro y frondoso pelo,
porque es un paño de lágrimas
y cruz en el cementerio;
porque en medio de las balas
sube a la sierra, sin miedo,
rayo de luz en la noche
¡virginal azul de incienso!

20 Nov 2009 Photo of Morro Bay Harbor more-or-less from the perspective of a 1942 photo
digital picture frame
20 Nov 2009 Photo of Morro Bay Harbor more-or-less from the perspective of a 1942 photo (ref. set www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ ) showing original dredging operations before the Embarcadero was built up. Charlene Odekirk, Rosemary Olszewski asked me to take a photo of present-day 2009 Morro Bay dredging operations from the same perspective as the 1942 dredging photo she showed to me. It was suggested (by Rouvaishyana?) that the two images might be hung together in the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History for visitor interest. I have included a couple of candidate photos, as the current dredging setup barely shows in the image taken from the same point as the machinery is located further out at the Rock and is tiny in the image. www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/2303222094 is one location I recommend for the "2009" version. This one taken 3/1/09 does not have the dredging equipment visible of course but really shows the new harbor. I here posted other present-day image candidates at the set at www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ (I have also included some iPhone shots of the 1942 image just for perspective - they are NOT of reproduction quality). You can download the full-resolution versions of the photos in this set (you may need to login, and select "all sizes") and print it, or click "order prints" and it can be fulfilled online. I turned my printer off over two year ago and now outsource all my limited printing needs to mpix.com or the like. I wanted to suggest that to really demonstrate the changes over time, that the new image(s) not be a print, but simply a photo, or better, a video, displayed in one of those inexpensive LCD digital picture frames that PJ used to promote my Click-Click product in 2008. Anyway, I can't resist pushing people's technical buttons. I have repeatedly suggested that museum displays that are visual only and not consist of palpable or 3-dimensional objects, be rendered via HD programmable LCD displays (a suggestion for the museum improvements committee?). Imagine, exhibits that never fade and can be incrementally improved at no cost! You might also ask "Morro Rock, Morro Bay, CA. What did it Look Like between the Mainland and the Rock from the Late 1800's until Today?" My morro-bay.com/historical/ link to morro-bay.com/morro-rock/ - this page is full of maps and photos showing answers to questions of before and after. Check it out. Best! This totally uninspired and uninspiring picture is for Assignment52 - Nostalgia.

I liked the theme this week, but I just didn't get around to doing anything decent.

Nevertheless, it fits the theme in two ways - firstly it's an old-fashioned picture in itself, but also because it's been in my parents' kitchen for as long as I can remember.

Not happy with anything I've taken recently. Must try harder!
