View from the Netherlands Carillon [EXPLORE]

Whenever you see a photograph that clusters the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the US Capitol in a single frame, it was most likely shot from Arlington, Virginia, at the Netherland's Carillon, next to the Iwo Jima Memorial. You can use a lot of different lenses to get interesting shots, but many of them use a telephoto to get in close.

The Netherlands Carillon (49 bells) is adjacent to Arlington Cemetery and right next to the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial. It was a gift to the United States from the people of the Netherlands in 1954. It was a "Thank You" present after the U.S. helped the Netherlands during and after WWII.

It overlooks a field of tulips, and this view.

According to Wikipedia, the Netherlands Carillon bells play "Westminster Chimes" on the hour and plays American patriotic music twice daily. Special songs are played on May 5 (Dutch Liberation Day), July 4 (U.S. Independence Day), September 2 (V-J Day), and Thanksgiving Day.

To get there, just got to: Arlington Boulevard and Meade Street, Arlington, VA 22209

Explore Position: 414.

there are some new changes coming soon with my website! (& blog) I'm almost done editing my last wedding of the year and that means I now can focus on renewing some parts of my photography practise.

This is Anglesey abby in cambridge - the colour on this image is intense, which is a shame. Also the full size image is better but you know at least I've stuck to my own boundaries I set at the start of this 52

Footnote: the boy here is the son of my lover at the time. He was somewhat "undocumented" as can happen 'around here, and so he got to pick his own name, and he chose Robin Beach. A beautiful name. Anyway, he lived with his father so I didn't see much of him and I left the province shortly after this show was shot.

Fast forward about eight years...I'm in Vancouver. North Vancouver somewhere...on a ledge at the edge of a cliff hundreds of feet over the Georgia Straight. It's an unbearably beautiful bright spring day. I'm sitting on a blanket with two beautiful women, drinking champaigne and eating strawberries the size of golf balls. We're there relaxing, waiting for the marriage cerimony for my two friends to start. We have time to kill. The bride is stuck in traffic because Bill Clinton has the Lion's Gate bridge closed so he can jog the seawall. We're listening to jazz music on my portable stereo. The wind dies and the cd finishes and a great quiet appears to our ears.

I hear a faint scrabbling sound. Then again. It seems to be coming from nowhere. It gets louder and I can hear breathing. It seems to be coming from the bay below. I look up and see the edge of the cliff and nothing more, but I can hear the sound of laboured breathing. Two seconds later a naked hand appears at the top of the cliff. It feels around for a grip and digs in. Another hand appears and does the same. I hear a great exhalation and a foot appears and with a tough grunt a body pulls itself over the top of the cliff and rolls over panting at my feet.

I look down into the dazed face of the climber. A shock of recognition ran through me as I looked into the eyes of this strapping fearless athlete.

"Hi Robin." I said, "How's yer mum? Care for some champaigne?"

True story.

P.S. The groom was a mutual friend of myself and Robin's mother and we used to hang around together at the time these photos were shot, of course. And people ask me why I think Newfoundland is magic.

HDR - The Autotune of the Photography World
photo websites
Yesterday, while browsing one of my favorite non-photography websites, the topic of HDR came up in a comments discussion and one of the comments contained the following quote:

"HDR=The autotune of the photography world"

This ignorant commenter is relating the use of autotuning in the music industry - the process of digitally modifying a vocal track by making pitch corrections - to the creation of high dynamic range images. This implies two misconceptions about HDR that need to be cleared right now.

1. The HDR image creation process (also called tonemapping) is easy.

False. For proof, check out my HDR Tutorial. I think there are a lot of people out there that think HDR is simply a button on the camera or a program that easily turns a standard image into a tonemapped one. This is not true, it has taken me almost 2 years worth of trial and error with all the different sliders and settings possible, to get the production of my photography to where it is now, and I am still learning new things every day. No two images are ever the same, and each image that I produce requires a different balance of settings to achieve the right balance of light.

Ok, so maybe it is not easy to create a tonemapped image from brackets, but any amateur can create a compelling HDR once they learn tonemapping, right? This brings me to misconception #2.

2. The HDR process can turn any photo taken by an amateur photographer into something appealing.

This couldn't be further from the truth. When producing an HDR image, all the rules of good composition, lighting, and time of day still exist. If you don't believe me, take a look at some of my early work and you will notice a complete disregard for many of the core principles of composition. I will admit that a byproduct of the HDR process is the creation of excellent looking texture and this leads certain subjects to be more suited towards HDR than others. The below image of a wine cellar at Castello di Verrazzano is a perfect example of that. That does not, however, mean that any composition, with any set of f-stop, white balance, ISO, and expsoure settings would come out looking like the image you see below.

I give my readers the benefit of the doubt, and I believe that it is only a small percentage of people that still have these misconceptions about HDR photography. For the critics that are still out there though, I ask you to stop looking at HDR as some sort of cheap equivalent of autotuning in the music industry and start seeing HDR as what it really is. HDR is simply a breakthrough technology in the photography industry. Photographers can embrace this technology, or they can ignore it.

Since you are here, please, make a comment. :-) Also, If you like my photography, check out my website/blog at: www.JohnRRogers.com for more information.

I've been meaning to do a more current photo of the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue for awhile. The challenge is getting the rather dark statue to pop out from the evening sky. This image is a combination of light painting & HDR. I did three long exposures of Stevie while lighting the statue and surrounding area with my super duper mini flashlight. You can see my other photos of the Stevie statue here.

NYC - Union Square: Metronome - The Vortex
photo websites
Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel's 1999 Union Square art installation, The Metronome, confounds tourists and locals alike. As described on their website, "Metronome is an investigation into the nature of time. The work references the multiple measures of time that simultaneously inform and confound our consciousness of the moment within the continuum. This composite work intends to evoke contemplation on the dynamic flux of the city. The elements suggest the instant and infinity, astronomical sequence, geological epoch and ephemerality. Metronome is meant to be integral to the very history, architectural fabric, spirit and vitality of the city. Ultimately, the work is an ode to mortality and the impossibility of knowing time."

The Metronome consists of a central undulating brick wall in the center with a wide glass facade to the left that displays The Passage, a clock counting up and down from midnight.

More from the website:
This wall appears fluid, it defies our sense of the built environment as fixed in time. At the center of the brick undulations is an enigmatic hole from which an ephemeral plume of steam emanates suggesting the intangibility of time. Counterpoised below on the wall is a massive piece of bedrock, suggesting the millions of years of geological history which has occurred to form this island we stand on today. A long thin bronze cone gives perspective to the wall and appears to be a sweeping indicator and a source for the sounding of noon and midnight. A large bronze hand high on the wall gestures a benediction. This hand is an identical enlargement from the historical statue of George Washington in the park directly below. The hand is a reminder of how history is our own creation.

Pendennis Castle B+W
photo websites
website | facebook | twitter | linkedin

A black & white version of this one.

Run through a high contrast red filter within a b+w adjustment layer in PS, with a few changes to the default sliders.

Bit of history courtesy of www.cornwalls.co.uk/attractions/Pendennis-Castle.htm

Pendennis and St Mawes Castles were both constructed in the middle of the 16th century to form the Cornish end of a chain of coastal castles built by Henry VIII to defend the country from invasion by France and Spain. Over the following 400 years Pendennis was frequently adapted to provide new coastal defences, up to and including the Second World War.

Although St Mawes was constructed as quite a showplace, with decorative carvings on quality stone, Pendennis began as a simple round tower and gate enclosed by a curtain wall. A new defensive wall was built around the original fort in 1598 and the castle was further strengthened prior to the English Civil War. The future Charles II and his mother, Queen Henrietta Maria, stayed here in 1646, before sailing to the Isles of Scilly. It withstood five months of siege, before becoming next to the last mainland Royalist garrison to surrender.

Throughout the site, there is evidence of the fascinating history of Pendennis. The Noonday Gun is fired each day during the summer season and the Guardhouse has been renovated to reflect its First World War appearance. There are underground tunnels, which are open to visitors, a Second World War battery, and the original Tudor keep with a recreated gun deck.

The great siege of Pendennis Castle began when Parliamentary forces attacked the fortress from land and sea in 1646. The Roundheads cut lines of communication using trenches and gun positions, and set up headquarters at Arwenack House in Falmouth. Pendennis Garrison was under the command of 80 year old Sir John Arundel, assisted by Sir Henry Killigrew MP, and held out for six months. The defenders were reduced to eating their horses and dogs meat before final surrendering to the Parliamentary army of Sir Thomas Fairfax.

The location of the castle high on Pendennis Head overlooking Falmouth and the surrounding area has made it an integral part of the British coastal defences since the beginning, although the castle really predates the town which grew in the shadow of Pendennis. The land was originally leased from the Killigrew family, who provided several Captains of the castle.

Amanda Palmer Eyes

[Buy prints of my work at ImageKind, or visit my website: David Lindes Photography.]

I had the privilege last night to meet Amanda Palmer, of the Dresden Dolls, after their show. Even better, she allowed me to take close-up pictures of her face.

I hope one day to perhaps get another chance at that, sometime when she and I are both more prepared for it (i.e. she's not in just-finished-a-show state, and we're in more of a studio type environment, and I'm more practiced at facial close-ups).

Still, I have something, which is a lot, because I've been thinking her eybrow makeup is the coolest thing ever for quite a long time (i.e. since I first saw it in a picture or video or whatever).

This here is an attempt at making a fairly clinical-looking, uncool photo of such cool eyes and eyebrows look a bit better.

There's just one source image here, but with several curves adjustment layers, each partially masked out, and an additional layer of just white, to get some unwanted darkness from creeping in on the sides.

Amanda, if you read this: thank you very much for allowing me to photograph you -- and for an awesome show, in general. Whether or not I ever get another chance at shooting your eyes and eyebrows, I hope you like this shot.

(Pics of Brian's eyes may be coming too...)
