Stopping in the Bay of Naples for Dinner
image sites
I always wonder what it would be like to have a non-stop boat-lifestyle. Having a boat... sailing up and down the Italian riviera... stopping in one little town for a snack... going to an abandoned grotto for some diving... sailing to a new port for dinner at sunset... I think that would be a nice life, eh?

This was shot in Naples. The city has a beautiful castle jutting out into the Bay of Napoli. It overlooks a cool harbor, a thriving shop and restaurant area, and Mount Vesuvius looming on the horizon.

I was told to closely watch all my camera gear and bags while walking around Naples. There's supposed to be a lot of crime, and I don't doubt it. But I didn't see any while there. The biggest problem was only have 15 hours of daylight to shoot, and I felt like I was a bit robbed by the god of time.

Also, I recently updated my SLR Camera recommendations as well on the site... in case you were lookin' for something...

king of the temple

Taken with the sun directly behind the Shore Temple. Shore Temple is a standing testimonial to the regal heritage of India. Located at Mahabalipuram, Shore Temples can easily be reached by taking regular buses or by hiring taxis from anywhere in Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is located at Chennai that lies at a distance of 60 kms from Mahabalipuram. One of the most photographed monuments in India, Shore Temple is a structural monument on the shores of Bay of Bengal.

Built in the 7th century, Shore Temple depicts the royal taste of Pallava dynasty. During the reign of Rajasimha, the temple saw its construction when Pallava art was at its apex. Ravaged by wind and sea, the temple has witnessed the historical events of India. This work of genius was recognized and listed amongst the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Shore Temple comprises three shrines, where the prominent ones are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. In the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), an image of Shivalinga embraces the site. At the rear end, one can find two shrines facing each other. Here, one shrine is dedicated to Ksatriyasimnesvara and other to Lord Vishnu. In the shrine, Lord Vishnu is imaged reclining on the 'Seshanag', which is a symbol of consciousness in Hinduism.

The exterior wall of the shrine to Lord Vishnu and the internal side of the boundary wall are elaborately carved and sculptured. The images on the sculpted panels depict scenes from everyday life. However, the sculptures are incredibly real and artistic. The exterior walls of the temple are segregated by plasters into bays, where the lower part has been impressed into a series of nurturing lions. The archeological department has excavated certain other figures from the site.

Shore Temple is no more a living temple. The structure of the temple makes one to contemplate and perhaps, it was erected basically as a work of art. The Pallavas were known to be the great patrons of art and were keen to create their own style of temple architecture. In the present day, Shore Temple makes the background of Mahabalipuram Dance Festival that is held in Jan /Feb every year. The festival was organized to promote the traditional dance as well as tourism in Mahabalipuram.

Klamath Falls Mountain Bike Trails - Hot Lava
image sites
Hot Lava is basically just a connector trail between Whiskeytown and Endo, not a remarkable trail in and of itself, but it has some nice views.

Klamath Falls has some very nice mountain bike trails. I have been riding them since 1988 when I bought my first mountain bike. Most of the trails in these photos are on public land but most of the trails are on private property and the mountain bikers have had full access for two decades.

Regrettably many of the trails are now the sites of land development, including some gated communities. Every time I ride or trail run up here, which is nearly every day, I see some new development. I am not complaining - it has been private land all these years and I am glad for the many years of terrific riding we have had. Who wouldn't want to live here? It is a wonderful place.

A Night at the Museum

This is one of the final photos I was able to squeeze off before the security guards nabbed me. Arg! I wanted to get so many more… but you know, you know… it’s the same old story.

Anyway, if you ever visit Paris, you absolutely need to make it over here to the museum of natural history. It’s known to the locals, but not to visitors. All the other sites in Paris are great, of course… but if you have a penchant for science and a love of crazy interior design, this is the place for you!

A Slight Shift

Notice how the right side crane is a bit blurry. It's actually perfectly in focus. I do not know why it looks blurry, probably something to do with the girder structure. It's the perfect looking left side crane that moved during exposures.

Photo is from last winter and on the background is the construction site for Vantaa waste power plant. Now it is a bit unfair to talk about this place as Vantaa waste power plant as the collection area extends from this location over 150 km west all the way to Hanko. Yes, it's only west, not east.

Notice how the highlight of two lamps is almost perfect. I think I finally managed to get the grips of generating non magenta highlights to HDR:s. Note that this is probably not an issue if you are using latest LuminanceHDR.

You may experience magenta highlights if you use 16 bit tiff or raw images to make HDR's.It is possible to make HDR's from jpg but my experience is that the colours will be dull. I am unfamiliar with the improvements on RAW handling of Luminance HDR but on the very old 2.0.2 version I use it is tricky. My work flow is Rawstudio -> 16 bit Tiff -> HDR. This work flow produces good and vibrant colours but over saturated areas turn typically to magenta, sometimes green and fixing these manually in Gimp can be quite difficult.

Also on this image the lamps on the centre had been over saturated and after tone mapping the highlight was pure magenta. I rejected the HDR and started over a bit differently. Steps were

1. Generate 16 bit tiff images using Rawstudio
2. Cd to image folder
3. Open base exposure with Gmic. Just type gmic bracket_1.tif (bracket_1.tif = your image file name)
4. In the preview window move your cursor on top of the highlight. Make a note of the values shown by the preview window. These values are shown in a corner. It may read something like 65535,60244,65535. These values are for RGB channels and the green has not been over saturated. Find the highest peak value for green in the highlights and make a note of it.
5. Close preview window.
6. Type gmic bracket_1.tif -cut 0,highest_peak_value -normalize 0,65535 -type ushort -o braket_1_cut.tif (here highest_peak_value=a bit less than the highest peak you found from your image. If you had 60244 then maybe 60200 would be good. I have tried this only twice yet so I can not say for sure.)
7. Repeat step 6 for all brackets with the same highest_peak_value.
8. Generate HDR with Luminance
9. Tonemap

What happens in step 6? Lets break it down.
gmic: Calls gmic
bracket_1.tif: Tells the file name to read for gmic. At this point image is converted to 32 bit per pixel because gmic does all processing as 32 bit.
-cut 0,highest_peak_value: Cuts the image data so that values above highest_peak_value are thrown away. For highlights this means that magenta turns now to grey.
-normalize 0,65535: Stretches remaining data back to full 16 bit range. This turns our highlights back to pure white.
-type ushort: Changes the pixel data back to fit 16 bits
-o braket_1_cut.tif: Writes output to file braket_1_cut.tif

Few considerations
It is worth while noting that this method changes the colour balance of the whole image. In this case it was not much but in other cases it might be. If the method produces good highlights but bad white balance otherwise then make another image with out the cutting and use Gimp+masks to combine the two images. I also tried just normalizing the green channel and it worked too but affected the white balance more in this case. The command used was
gmic image.tif -split c -cut[1] 0,60000 -normalize[1] 0,65535 -append c -type ushort -o output.tif

For this image two different HDR's were produced, one with camera white balance and one with spot adjusted white balance. These were combined in gimp to produce the orange tinge of the lamps. In addition quite a lot of other masking and colour tint edits was made (for example the bluish border). Final image has a total of 12 layers, bottom two of these are the tonemapped LDR's made from two cut value HDR's.

For comparison of different raw developers see
picasaweb.google.com/108661635615415981999/RawDeveloperHD...

I found out that it is possible to controllably produce excellent results with UFRaw by adjusting EV. Same method should work also on other raw developers but it is not possible to know the correct adjustment value from the information shown. UFRaw gives percentage values for the amount of overexposed pixels and it seems that this information can be used to set correct exposure compensation.

Mount Jerome Dublin

Mount Jerome is a forty-seven acre site in Harold's Cross just outside Dublin city, Mount Jerome is one of Dublin's most famous cemeteries, the other being Glasnevin on the north side. James Joyce's Ulysses mentions it. Mount Jerome has a large number of highly ornate crypts and memorials. These range from simple urns on columns, to broken columns and weeping angels to large imposing columned structures .Angels and urns are the most photographic especially with the toy camera. There is underground access to many of the crypts also worth photographing.

As well as the many Dubliners both protestant and catholic there are well known people also buried here including Sir William Wilde Oscar's father and members of the Guinness family, Martin Cahill known as the general is buried here. Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) members plot is there and the remains of the French Huguenots fare also buried here.

This image was taken on a toy camera the Holga on Ilford HP5 film and developed in Agfa Rodinal.

If you are in Dublin do put it on your list of places to visit.

Big Sur Morning

I had spent the entire previous day at Hearst Castle in California -- all the way until the sun went down. That messed up my plans a bit to drive up Highway 1 and take in the sites with my camera. So I drove just about an hour or so north and found a little lodge right on the rocky coast. It was one of those mysterious late-night checkins where you can't see what's around you, but you have a feeling it's kinda awesome. The next morning, I woke up early to see this! I hopped over a fence and hiked along the top of the cliffs to see the various views... Just as the sun was coming up, I grabbed this one from under a tree.

A Slice of Life in Malaysia (and thanks for the Facebook Fan club members breaking 1,000 strong!)

I spent a few weekends in the Chinese area of Melaka, which is on the southern coast. After it gets dark outside and you walk down the streets, you can always see little glowing lights coming from inside homes that are crammed together in the streets. There is a general clatter of Chinese voices with the clanking and scraping of dinner being made and shared. One of them had the door slightly ajar with a good mood coming out (picked up by my Jacobson's Organ), so I craned my neck around inside with a smile to see what was happening. I had my camera in plain sight, and it's always novel for them to see a whitey in this area of town. I gave an international greeting of "howdy", and then the international sign of "can I take a photo of your interesting living area", and then I snapped a single RAW for conversion to HDR later.

There are all kinds of interesting things inside if you look close... like a massive amount of eggs for a small home and also the ever-present Milo, which all Malaysians love and have in ready supply.

I checked the Facebook fan club today, which I should do more, and saw that it had broken 1,000 fans! Thanks everyone - that is cool. I am not sure the best thing to do on there yet; I'd like to occasionally do fun things there, like I do on Twitter, for people that like to see real-time updates or behind-the-scenes activity. If you have any ideas, feel free to start up a discussion thread there on the fan site and I'll be sure to check in to see what I can do to help out!

A most unusual park over on 17th Avenue NW between NW 62nd-63rd Streets. It's a community project, a Pocket Park, if you will.

The park came together from the combination of two lots, one of which used to be a corner grocery store. Today, an entrance designed to mimic the antique corner store entrance stands at the corner where passing local residents can read about the site’s history.

Toward the south, a few parts of the wall are all that remain of a house that used to sit on the lot; a concrete couch, end table and lounge chair occupy the space now.
