Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

Working on my idea of the bunny portrait that I want to hang in my bedroom. I hand drew a bunny that I felt was my "inner" bunny (if you get me). I'm embellishing the image with various Kanji to represent what I embody, what I would like to embody, or things which I feel should be my focus. Need to change the background, I think it muddies the image, but at least I'm getting a little more adept at GIMP.

Heaven or Las Vegas
image editing online
About 10 minutes ago there was this amazing sunset here in Las Vegas. It really made me feel good to shoot it. I'm so tired. Running on no sleep. It's pretty unlikely that I'll make my 1,000 photos uploaded before I leave goal (I've only got 456 online so far). And then I feel really kind of creeped out right now. I'm not sure why exactly. It probably has something to do with taking a side trip away from CES today to shoot the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo. It was interesting but I'm all conflicted about shooting it.

I've admired Larry Sultan's series The Valley for a long time. The human depth and emotion that he gave to the porn world in the San Fernando Valley. But I'm no Larry Sultan and the interaction with the women while shooting today seemed so strange. So fake and lukewarm on the outside, posing for the thousandth time, while hard and tough on the inside. I'm still not sure what to do with images of that that I shot today. Some are explicit and I don't think I'll put those online. Others are not -- but what am I really doing with them other than just getting them up for perhaps all the wrong reasons.

Anyways, the sunset felt really good for me to see and shoot tonight because it is something safe and warm and comfortable for me and even though sunsets are cliche it makes me feel a little less hollow for now.

Whether it’s off to medical or law school, a master’s or Ph.D. program, the job market or even your parents basement, different students have different plans after graduation. The question ever apparent in the minds of upperclassmen in the spring time is a question of just what exactly will they be doing after walking across that stage at graduation.

Some students know exactly what they will be doing, while some students take a perhaps more “fluid” approach to planning their future. The thing I find important, despite whether you are a student who has it all figured out or not, is to plan ahead and keep your doors open.

When I say keep your doors open, I mean give yourself as many potential opportunities as possible.

While many students may know exactly what they want to do, what harm would it be to create a few potential back up plans if need be? In my opinion, college is a time where students have the opportunity to learn as much as possible and can decide what subjects they truly enjoy. If you have your heart set on something, in no way would I suggest you give up on that dream, as I believe an individual naturally works better in a field they truly enjoy, however, it is important to err on the side of caution. Who knows what else you might find to be enjoyable if you branch out a little?

To make sure you are ready for whatever comes your way after graduation, I would stress to plan early.

The fact of the matter is that underclassmen, freshmen especially, rarely tend to think as much about their post-graduation lives as their upperclassmen counterparts do. This is only natural. However, at the risk of sounding like a guidance counselor, I would stress that the earlier you start setting yourself up for what you want to accomplish after your four years at Florida State, the better.

If you have a few ideas as to what you would like to do after school, then research exactly what type of qualifications will make you competitive for that position. Do you need a certain type of internship? Are there preferred majors? Do you need to take specific classes or certain exams such as the GRE or GMAT? All of this may be intuitive; however, it is something that is easy to keep putting off until the last minute when it may be too late.

Now graduate school may be the answer for many students, but I would stress that going to graduate school just for the sake of going to graduate school is a poor choice. In today’s economics climate, many students who cannot find a job after graduation tend to use graduate school as a backup plan. This may be only delaying the problem, though. Certainly there are career choices where a graduate degree will be very beneficial, but this is not always the case. It is important to research how heavily graduate degrees are weighed for the types of positions you will be applying for and determine if the potential benefit of the degree outweighs the cost. Taking on additional debt and forfeiting the opportunity cost of potential income due to attending graduate school is a decision not to be taken lightly.

In conclusion, planning ahead for your future and keeping many doors open can help ease the stress of entering the job market and help lead you to a rewarding career. Whether you think you know what you want to do exactly or not, giving yourself many options to chose from and carefully weighing out the costs and benefits of each option is a good game plan to stick to.

Plagiarism Prevention at UMass Amherst (Turnitin)
Introduction

Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention service that detects textual matches between student papers and other documents available in electronic form on the Internet, in subscription databases, and in databases of student papers.

UMass Amherst Libraries licensed Turnitin as a stand-alone service for the UMass Amherst campus beginning in January 2006. As of fall 2007, the service is also fully integrated into SPARK courses. UMass Amherst student papers submitted to the service since January 2006 are stored in a special database accessible only to UMass Amherst faculty and not to anyone at any other institution that subscribes to Turnitin (hence student intellectual property rights are protected).

-----Turnitin Web Site Vs. Turnitin in SPARK/Moodle

UMass Amherst instructors can use Turnitin within SPARK or Turnitin with Moodle, or they can use the Turnitin Web site to assess students' assignments. Both are provided courtesy of the UMass Amherst libraries, but *the two methods do not work in conjunction with one another*. Student assignments submitted through SPARK cannot be seen by the instructor on the Turnitin Web site and vice versa.

-----Why Use Turnitin in SPARK or Moodle?

Turnitin within SPARK is ideal for instructors who already have a SPARK course and/or for large courses. We recommend that instructors use the Turnitin Web site when they would like to submit just a few suspect papers for review and do not wish to open a SPARK course account.

-----Faculty Use of Turnitin

Faculty using Turnitin outside of SPARK must contact the Library for account information. Faculty may use plagiarism prevention services during the grading process as described in the Academic Regulations 2007-2008, pp. 7-8 (www.umass.edu/registrar/media/academicregs.pdf ):

"Intellectual honesty requires that students demonstrate their own learning during examinations and other academic exercises, and that other sources of information or knowledge be appropriately credited. Scholarship depends upon the reliability of information and reference in the work of others. Student work at the University may be analyzed for originality of content. Such analysis may be done electronically or by other means. Student work may also be included in a database for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarized content in future student submissions. No form of cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, or facilitating dishonesty will be condoned in the University community."

-----Student Use of Turnitin

Students using Turnitin to submit assignment for their Moodle course can review helpful resources created by the Instructional Media Lab.

-----Academic Honesty Policy

The Academic Honesty policy and procedures created by the Ombuds Office and sponsored by the Dean of Students were revised in 2007.

-----Academic Honesty Information for Faculty and Students

The Education Subcommittee of the Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Student Plagiarism supports a Web site on academic honesty for faculty and students on plagiarism and intellectual property. As a portion of that Web site, the Subcommittee provides the following sample paragraphs for faculty to edit and include in their syllabi to inform students that they will use one or both of the services in their course. The Subcommittee also recommends faculty discuss plagiarism with students on the first day of class.

-----Sample Syllabus Statements

If you plan to use the Turnitin plagiarism prevention service for all assignments in your course, include this paragraph in your syllabus and review it during the first class meeting:

As a condition of continued enrollment in this course, you agree to submit all assignments to the Turnitin for textual comparison or originality review for the detection of possible plagiarism. All submitted assignments will be included in the UMass Amherst dedicated database of assignments at Turnitin and will be used solely for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism during the grading process and during this term and in the future. Students who do not submit their papers electronically to the service will be required to submit copies of the cover page and first cited page of each source listed in the bibliography with the final paper in order to receive a grade on the assignment.

If you plan to use the Turnitin plagiarism prevention service for selected suspect assignments, include this paragraph in your syllabus and review it during the first class meeting:

Students should be aware that suspect assignments (e.g., those without drafts, without works cited pages, or with large departures in style) may be submitted to Turnitin by the instructor for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism. Submitted assignments will be included in the UMass Amherst dedicated database of assignments at Turnitin and will be used solely for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism during the grading process during this term and in the future. Students must provide an electronic copy of their assignment to the instructor for submission to the service when plagiarism is suspected, in order to receive a grade on the assignment and to avoid possible sanctions.

-----Need Help with Turnitin?

For account information, assistance with, or comments on Turnitin, visit
www.library.umass.edu/tools/turnitin/
For questions, contact: turnitin@library.umass.edu

For assistance with using Turnitin inside SPARK, instructors should contact Academic Computing's Instructional Media Lab (545-2823 | instruct@oit.umass.edu). Students should contact the OIT Help Desk (413-545-9400).

.

Youth Heartline’s CPSP is unique in the Taos community in that the Talking About Touching curriculum we use for pre-school through third grade is supported by 25 years of research about its effectiveness. We know that children learn best in a safe, trusting environment. The agency that created the TAT curriculum, Committee for Children, is heavily invested in assuring that the curriculum and its instructors establish this safety. Though the fact that child abuse exists in Taos is not a popular topic of conversation, nevertheless it is a reality, and one that actually needs to be directly addressed through education and open community dialogue. It is a fact that the more readily a community confronts child abuse, the more such incidents decline in that community. This is true because secrecy and denial create an environment in which abuse can and does flourish. The worst fact about an atmosphere that fosters child abuse—secrecy—is that the abused child is extremely likely to become an abuser himself or herself.

Prevention of abuse is the most effective way to approach this problem, and the most promising in the effort to end abuse altogether. Addressing this important topic when children are very young increases the likelihood of providing a safe environment for them. But in the end, it is the adults around children who are really responsible for provision of a safe and healthy environment for children. It is our responsibility as a community to be able to talk to each other about child abuse and how we can keep children safe. Child Personal Safety Project supports and informs parents, teachers, and other caretakers in this effort.
Please do your part to participate in this community dialogue.

Your support of the Child Personal Safety Project is of absolute importance. We thank you for the financial assistance that you can provide because you share our belief that education and discussion of the facts are the path to a community that is safe for children.

Stopping in the Bay of Naples for Dinner
image sites
I always wonder what it would be like to have a non-stop boat-lifestyle. Having a boat... sailing up and down the Italian riviera... stopping in one little town for a snack... going to an abandoned grotto for some diving... sailing to a new port for dinner at sunset... I think that would be a nice life, eh?

This was shot in Naples. The city has a beautiful castle jutting out into the Bay of Napoli. It overlooks a cool harbor, a thriving shop and restaurant area, and Mount Vesuvius looming on the horizon.

I was told to closely watch all my camera gear and bags while walking around Naples. There's supposed to be a lot of crime, and I don't doubt it. But I didn't see any while there. The biggest problem was only have 15 hours of daylight to shoot, and I felt like I was a bit robbed by the god of time.

Also, I recently updated my SLR Camera recommendations as well on the site... in case you were lookin' for something...

Taken with the sun directly behind the Shore Temple. Shore Temple is a standing testimonial to the regal heritage of India. Located at Mahabalipuram, Shore Temples can easily be reached by taking regular buses or by hiring taxis from anywhere in Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is located at Chennai that lies at a distance of 60 kms from Mahabalipuram. One of the most photographed monuments in India, Shore Temple is a structural monument on the shores of Bay of Bengal.

Built in the 7th century, Shore Temple depicts the royal taste of Pallava dynasty. During the reign of Rajasimha, the temple saw its construction when Pallava art was at its apex. Ravaged by wind and sea, the temple has witnessed the historical events of India. This work of genius was recognized and listed amongst the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Shore Temple comprises three shrines, where the prominent ones are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. In the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), an image of Shivalinga embraces the site. At the rear end, one can find two shrines facing each other. Here, one shrine is dedicated to Ksatriyasimnesvara and other to Lord Vishnu. In the shrine, Lord Vishnu is imaged reclining on the 'Seshanag', which is a symbol of consciousness in Hinduism.

The exterior wall of the shrine to Lord Vishnu and the internal side of the boundary wall are elaborately carved and sculptured. The images on the sculpted panels depict scenes from everyday life. However, the sculptures are incredibly real and artistic. The exterior walls of the temple are segregated by plasters into bays, where the lower part has been impressed into a series of nurturing lions. The archeological department has excavated certain other figures from the site.

Shore Temple is no more a living temple. The structure of the temple makes one to contemplate and perhaps, it was erected basically as a work of art. The Pallavas were known to be the great patrons of art and were keen to create their own style of temple architecture. In the present day, Shore Temple makes the background of Mahabalipuram Dance Festival that is held in Jan /Feb every year. The festival was organized to promote the traditional dance as well as tourism in Mahabalipuram.

Klamath Falls Mountain Bike Trails - Hot Lava
image sites
Hot Lava is basically just a connector trail between Whiskeytown and Endo, not a remarkable trail in and of itself, but it has some nice views.

Klamath Falls has some very nice mountain bike trails. I have been riding them since 1988 when I bought my first mountain bike. Most of the trails in these photos are on public land but most of the trails are on private property and the mountain bikers have had full access for two decades.

Regrettably many of the trails are now the sites of land development, including some gated communities. Every time I ride or trail run up here, which is nearly every day, I see some new development. I am not complaining - it has been private land all these years and I am glad for the many years of terrific riding we have had. Who wouldn't want to live here? It is a wonderful place.

Miss Gergana and Mr. Kralev, version 2
image galleries
Image by gwilmore (I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT!)
A color version of this image appears elsewhere in my photostream, and I regard it as perhaps my best dance photo of all time. A 5x7 print of it sits in a frame atop the credenza in my office, and another framed 5x7 print adorns the receptionist's desk at the Chandler Fred Astaire studio. That one is immediately visible to anyone entering the studio, and it has generated some good publicity for that establishment, as well as for the photographer. A week or so ago I dropped by for a brief visit, and a student I barely knew came up to me, pointed to it, and said, "That's an AMAZING picture!"

This morning I posted a link to that photo on my Facebook page, where it generated some very nice comments. A couple of my friends suggested that I do a version in black and white, which at first I was disinclined to do because I just didn't want to tamper with something that was already so close to being perfect. But then I thought, why not? Accordingly, after all of about two minutes of processing in PSE 3.0, here's the black-and-white version for all the world to see. This one will be linked on my Facebook page as well, so we'll see what kind of feedback it generates.

Incidentally, a third framed copy of the color version was given to Miss Gergana, and it now forms part of the decor of the apartment she shares with Mr. Kralev.
