Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

Miss Gergana and Mr. Kralev, version 2
image galleries
Image by gwilmore (I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT!)
A color version of this image appears elsewhere in my photostream, and I regard it as perhaps my best dance photo of all time. A 5x7 print of it sits in a frame atop the credenza in my office, and another framed 5x7 print adorns the receptionist's desk at the Chandler Fred Astaire studio. That one is immediately visible to anyone entering the studio, and it has generated some good publicity for that establishment, as well as for the photographer. A week or so ago I dropped by for a brief visit, and a student I barely knew came up to me, pointed to it, and said, "That's an AMAZING picture!"

This morning I posted a link to that photo on my Facebook page, where it generated some very nice comments. A couple of my friends suggested that I do a version in black and white, which at first I was disinclined to do because I just didn't want to tamper with something that was already so close to being perfect. But then I thought, why not? Accordingly, after all of about two minutes of processing in PSE 3.0, here's the black-and-white version for all the world to see. This one will be linked on my Facebook page as well, so we'll see what kind of feedback it generates.

Incidentally, a third framed copy of the color version was given to Miss Gergana, and it now forms part of the decor of the apartment she shares with Mr. Kralev.

Xoooox - Stencil Art - Circleculture Gallery
photo galleries
The second solo exhibition at Circleculture Gallery in Berlin will once again highlight XOOOOX’s critical artistic understanding of fashion culture.

On display are delicate stenciled works and installations in an arte povera style that consist of weathered and decaying materials. In these works XOOOOX distinctly contrasts the glamour of fashion culture with existentialist themes such as vulnerability and transience.

The life-size stencils of professionally styled photo models form the leitmotif of the figurative “studies” and scrutinize the worship cult and the seduction techniques of haute couture.

Beguilingly beautiful, XOOOOX’s women convey a sense of melancholy and introversion and allude to the growing displeasure with the uniform, consumption-driven hype of the fashion industry.

Church Street, Burlington, Vermont USA • Seen through (and reflected off of) the front window of the Firehouse Gallery.

As the original sign carved into the building says: Ethan•Allen•Engine•Co•No•4 ∞ "Designed by A. B. Fisher, a prolific 19th century Burlington architect, this firehouse ranks as one of the most attractive buildings in downtown Burlington. Built in the heyday of volunteer fire companies, it was completed in the spring of 1889." *

Now operating as The Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts , The FCVA provides visitors with a fully-integrated arts experience through contemporary exhibitions and educational programming informed by the work in the Firehouse Gallery. The FCVA includes a community darkroom and photography studio; artist-in-residence studio; multimedia conference facility for lectures, film series, and panel discussions; and Resource Room and Library with public meeting space and Internet access. Burlington City Arts (BCA) opened all five floors of the building in 2004 after an extensive historic renovation, and has yet to complete the .5 million capital campaign. ∞ The Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts is programmed and managed by Burlington City Arts.

Boston - Back Bay: Boston Public Library McKim Building - Wiggin Gallery Dioramas - Honore Daumier
photo galleries
Artist Honore Daumier looks down from an upper window in this diorama. A number of the characters who appear in his lithographs come to life again in the Paris street he watches, the melon sniffers at left, the stout, indignant woman who observes them, the man carrying a painting., the problem child who drove his father, a poet, to desperation by beating on his dream, the loiterer who gazes into a shop window at food he does not have money to buy.

Located in a dark corner in the Wiggins Gallery, twelve dioramas created by Louis Stimson in the 1940's depict artists in the midst of painting some of their most famous works. The Albert H. Wiggin Gallery, originally devoted to special collections, was given over to the exhibiting of prints in 1941 when Mr. Wiggin, a Boston born New York financier, gave the Library his collection of prints and drawings.

The Boston Public Library McKim Building, located on Boylston Street between Dartmouth and Exeter Streets, was built in 1895 by Charles Follen McKim of McKim, Mead & White. Consisting of a three-story, monumental free-standing block in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace surrounding an open courtyard, McKim's design was one of the earliest successful examples of Renaissance Beaux-Arts Classicism in America, and set the precedent for grand scale urban libraries. In 1972, the Philip Johnson-designed late modernist wing was added to the Central Library location. The Boston Public Library system, established in 1848, was the country's first publicly supported municipal library, its first large library open to the public and its first to allow citizens to borrow books. There are currently twenty-six branches in the system.
