I had Joe release the shutter for this shot. This shows one of the last huge piles of books we saw on the second floor before an awkward encounter with a homeboy on the 1st floor. I wanted to give a better sense of scale to the shot by adding myself in it and I think I achieved that.

Having been challenged to describe myself in six books I'm afraid I failed miserably. Instead I flitted round my shelves extracting books on subjects that have held my eclectic attention for more than the usual. The trouble is that there are so many other subjects - six just isn't enough. Note that the French book (cartoons of Brel's lyrics) has its spine printed in the opposite direction. Something to do with driving on the wrong side of the road I suspect. I also missed a trick in not putting Chomsky's On Language on top of the book on a programming language :(

1) Albert Camus was one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century. His philosophical works, as well as his novels, have an enduring influence. Oliver Todd, authorised by Camus' family, wrote the definitive life. The impoverished childhood in Algiers, conflict between sympathy for the working class Algerians and for the French colonials. Intimacy with the collaborationist Gallimard family; his involvement in the Satre - de Beauvoir conflict; his battles with the tuberculosis that had ended his role as goalkeeper for the university football team. Camus not only won the 57 nobel prize for literature, but was the second-youngest recipient after Rudyard Kipling, and the first African-born writer to receive the award.

www.ladepeche.fr/article/2009/12/18/747959-Olivier-Todd-C...

2) I taught myself Perl not long after installing my first version of Linux about ten years ago. It started as a way of writing scripts to do things on that system. I then discovered that I could do anything with the language. I wrote programs that took data exported from an accounts package, using Perl and the WriteExcel library created formatted spreadsheets that were 100% accurate owing to the process being automated rather than the transferral of figures manually. The company I worked for were so pleased that they bought me the camel (book in the photo) as a reward.

oreilly.com/pub/a/oreilly/perl/usage/

3) Having read many of Chomsky's political works I bought this as soon as it was published. Two of Chomsky's most famous works were back in print in one volume. It features some of his most informal and highly accessible work, making it an ideal introduction to the man. Part I - Language and Responsibility : presents a self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking. Part II - Reflections on Language: explores the study of language and offers incisive analyses of modern controversies amongst experts.

4) One of the best birthday presents I ever got. The Blue Guide to the Museums & Galleries of London has opened my eyes to all sorts of new places to visit. One day I'll write my London on a shoestring book. There is just so much to see and do and it needn't cost a fortune.

5) The Brel book is one of a set of two that I bought in Nice. They were remaindered and cost me the grand sum of seventy francs each. That's about sixteen quid. This book I note also has a copy of the sheet music of Ne Me Quitte Pas tucked inside it's front cover. These two volumes are amongst the guilty pleasures of my book collection. Each contains a plethora of Brel's lyrics illustrated by some of the best cartoonists in Europe. There is even a smurf version of Rosa. My favourite however is probably Isabelle Busschaert's depiction of Marieke or possibly Jarry's depiction of Mon Pere Disait. Both remind me of the similarity between the flatlands of Belgium and the East Anglian countryside.

6) Pam Cook's The Cinema Book. This is now in its third edition and is recognised as the ultimate guide to cinema and film studies. The acquisition of this dates back to when a friend was doing a degree in media studies and raved about the book. I did some film studies courses around the same time and thought that this would be good reading. So I blew my expenses from doing a second channel 4 fifteen to one quiz show on this. Must keep an eye out for second and third editions at affordable prices :)

--- Disorderly and racist conduct

A physically and audibly intoxicated student was found lying in the grass on W. Virginia Street last Thursday morning. An FSUPD officer responded to the scene after receiving reports of the intoxicated male causing a disturbance. The officer reported that the subject was slurring his words and speaking incoherently. However, as soon as two African-American persons passed by, the subject’s speech improved and he repeatedly shouted racial slurs. The intoxicated subject continued to slur profanities at other passers-by. Suddenly, the subject began running down the street to evade police. After being quickly apprehended, the intoxicated male was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest without Violence.
.

--- Homeless man practices art of trespassing

Following a security check of the FSU Fine Arts Building around 3 a.m. last Thursday, an FSUPD officer noticed a man who appeared to be homeless loitering around the north side of the building. The man in question was carrying canned beer in a plastic bag. After the officer obtained the man’s identification, the officer ran his license and found that the man had previously received a trespass warning in January. This prior warning barred the subject from the entirety of the Florida State University campus. Because of this violation, the man was placed under arrest for Trespass After Warning.
.

--- The Drunk and the Furious: Tallahassee Drift

Last Saturday around 1 a.m., a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on W. Jefferson Street. The same vehicle then proceeded to drift into a lane of oncoming traffic causing another car to swerve out of the way. After observing both traffic violations, an FSUPD officer pursued the vehicle to Woodward Avenue to conduct a traffic stop. When the officer turned on his lights signaling the driver to pull over, the driver turned on their left turn signal and then made a right turn into the FSUPD parking lot where the traffic stop was conducted. The officer soon noted the odor of alcohol emanating from the driver’s car and from the driver herself as she was asked to step out of her car. The driver said she had a glass of Hennessey when the officer inquired if she consumed any alcohol before driving. The driver consented to three field sobriety tests. She did not pass any of the three tests. A partially-empty bottle of vodka was also found in the subject’s car. A check of the driver’s ID confirmed that she was Under 21. The driver was arrested for Possession of Liquor by Persons Under 21 and Driving Under the Influence.

The Flickr Book
photo book
Well, it's not here yet, but it's one of the best ideas I've come up with yet, I think.

One of the best overviews of great photography that I've seen is something called The Photo Book published by Phaidon. If you haven't had a chance to check it out you definitely should. It's a great primer on the world's greatest photographers. The idea is pretty simple, 500 photos by 500 photographers. The great ones are all included: Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, more modern greats like Andreas Gursky as well as important historical photo journalism like that of Eddie Adams and his Pulitzer prize winning photograph of the 1968 image of the execution of a Vietcong guerrilla in a Saigon street. The book is modestly priced at around which is a huge bargain compared to other art photography books out there.

So what does this have to do with Flickr? Flickr should publish The Flickr Book. Similar in style to Phaidon's The Photo Book it would also highlight 500 photographs from 500 photographers on Flickr. The kicker is that all of these photographs would come from Flickr's Explore selection and would be selected by a panel of editors at Flickr (Stewart, Caterina, Heather, whoever else, etc.). The quality of the book would be high and the price modest -- also like The Photo Book. A "The Photo Book" Flickr mashup -- very cool.

Ok, and here's the really, really, really best part. All profits from the project could go to one of two places.

First Flickr has already been very supportive of Creative Commons and this is great to see. I license all my photographs via Creative Commons and it is a wonderful way to be able to share your work with the world while still maintaining some degree of control over your images from a commercial sense. This could be a great project to raise additional funds for Creative Commons.

Alternatively, and I actually like this one even better, profits from the project could go to Kids with Cameras, a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to marginalized children in communities around the world. I picked up my first SLR when I was about 14 and learning photography as a child has had a profound impact on my life. To be able to provide the tools of photography to poor kids around the world who can't afford them and allow them to use this medium as an outlet and way to explore their world is tremendously empowering from a self confidence and self reflection perspective and provides tremendous emotional value to the disadvantaged.

So what's the downside to this project? Well first off Yahoo! could spend the money to publish a truly fantastic quality book and then nobody buys it (well you probably get at least 500 people and their family who buy it but no one beyond that). I'm not sure on the cost to publish a book like this but I would think it could be a small price to pay for the boatload of publicity that this project would receive and the goodwill directed towards both Yahoo! and Flickr over the project. Yahoo! of course does advertise and could direct people towards the book. They could also provide html code to put an ad for the book on people's blogs or Flickrstreams and get a boatload of free advertising for the book and the project (and for Flickr and Yahoo!). Even if the book failed, they would not lose.

So what's the upside? Tremendously powerful things.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art visits the South Carolina State Library

Rosemary Agoglia, Curator of Education for the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art speaks at the South Carolina State Library

Picture Book Art Comes to South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – On February 8-10, over 150 librarians, educators, and graduate students attended three South Carolina State Library sponsored workshops presented by Rosemary Agoglia of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Attendees learned about visually engaging young readers and the importance of inspiring children to read.

Agoglia presented sessions, The Whole Book Approach and Picturing Stories. The Whole Book Approach supports critical engagement with the picture book as an art form, places emphasis on reading with children rather than reading to children, and engages the group in a collaborative experience. In Picturing Stories, attendees were introduced to various visual literacy principles and used Carle’s exhibitions to explore approaches to “reading pictures” and apply this information to create a visual story using cut-paper collage.

The sessions received rave reviews: “This workshop opened a whole new world involving picture books for me. I’ve always thought of art as being an on-going visual conversation … now I know pictures are the introduction to that conversation.”

“Picture books are E for Everyone, not E for Easy. In our country, there are few cultural opportunities for visual literacy. This is something I do already and now I know the WHYS behind it.”

“I truly enjoyed myself—a reminder of what little art miracles picture books are.”

The mission of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is to inspire, especially in children and their families, an appreciation for and an understanding of the art of the picture book. In fulfilling that mission, the Museum aspires to build bridges to an appreciation of art of every kind and to provide an enriching, dynamic, and supportive context for the development of literacy. The Museum delivers this mission by collecting, presenting and celebrating the art of the picture book from around the world and by providing interactive experiences and programs that are engaging and educational.

For more information about the Museum, please visit www.carlemuseum.org. For more information about the State Library’s continuing education offerings, please contact Denise Lyons, Director of Library Development Services at dlyons@statelibrary.sc.gov or 803-734-6061.
