I bumped this shot because it appears there was a glitch while uploading this yesterday and for some reason the commenting became disabled. I dunno.

The above is an image shot last summer while Nathan was visiting the states from France. If I had to pick a photographer that has improved the most over the last year, it would be him. His cinematic look into the art has grown into a wonderfully composed art form in his hands. He is never afraid to try new techniques and put his images out there for critique by others. He bring a refreshing humility to the art form - something that is lacking among photographers in this fast paced and quickly growing community. I consider it a privilege to call him my friend.

Virginia - Arlington National Cemetery: Spanish American War Nurses Memorials

The Spanish American War Nurses memorial was erected by The Society of Spanish American War Nurses to those brave nurses who died during that war, many of whom are buried in Section 21 of Arlington National Cemetery. The Maltese cross, which serves as the insignia of the Society, rests atop a large granite megalith dedicated to the memory of their "brave comrade."

Arlington National Cemetery, a military cemetery directly across the Potomac from Washington, D.c., was established during the Civil War on the grounds of the Arlington House, formerly the estate of the family of Robert E. Lee's wife Mary Anna (Custis) Lee, a descendant of Martha Washington. By 1864, the military cemeteries of Washington and Alexandria were filled with Union dead. After Quartermaster General Montgomery C. Meigs quickly selected Arlington as a replacement, in part to prevent the Lee's from ever returning, the government confiscated the land claiming unpaid property taxes. Today, more than 300,000 people, including veterans and military casualties from every one of the nation's wars, are interred in the 624-acre cemetery administered by the Department of the Navy.

When Matthew Pratt went to London in 1764, he was welcomed bythis slightly younger compatriot Benjamin West, who, though, he had been practicing there for only a year, was already well on his way to success; young American painters were beginning to flock to him for instruction and advice. Many young artists went to London to learn about European traditions. The standing figure at the left is believed to be West himself; he instructs three attentive students in drawing, the prerequisite academic excercise. Pratt portrayed himself at an easel distinguishing himself from the other pupils as a full-fledged painter. The identities of the other artists represented in the picture remain uncertain, but they are younger and they draw rather than paint. The composition explores the academic tradition as carried out among Americans in late-eighteenth century London.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection contains more than two million works of art from around the world. It opened its doors on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Under their guidance of John Taylor Johnston and George Palmer Putnam, the Met's holdings, initially consisting of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 mostly European paintings, quickly outgrew the available space. In 1873, occasioned by the Met's purchase of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot antiquities, the museum decamped from Fifth Avenue and took up residence at the Douglas Mansion on West 14th Street. However, these new accommodations were temporary; after negotiations with the city of New York, the Met acquired land on the east side of Central Park, where it built its permanent home, a red-brick Gothic Revival stone "mausoleum" designed by American architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold. As of 2006, the Met measures almost a quarter mile long and occupies more than two million square feet, more than 20 times the size of the original 1880 building.

In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked #17 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967. The interior was designated in 1977.

A watchful eye

I wasn't sure about this one because of the highlights on his face, rather than just having a solid silhouette, but I thought Id upload it, and see what you thought.

The bright areas of the face were a result of the bright sunlight that day, the silhouette was created using the bright sky. As I said, I wasnt sure about the bright areas of the face so I was tempted to darken them out in photoshop, but I decided to leave this image as it came out of the camera, (aside from a crop of some boring bits to make it more correct compositionwise)
