March 15th will be the third and final anniversary of my Daily Portrait Project, in which I've made a non-photographic self-portrait every day and posted it on the web. To celebrate I'm throwing a Portrait Party - instead of drawing myself I'm going to draw other artists.

It would be great if you also want to draw me and/or the other artists who have posted photos of themselves, but its not required. However, although I'm not actually starting on this project for another couple days many of the other artists have already gone gang-busters. It's a load of fun, so check it out!

Well, for three years I've taken pictures of myself to draw from on at least a weekly basis- so here's a few more for the party.

These were all taken with the video cam in my computer so the resolution isn't that great but they're pretty sharp. Some with my absolute favorite hat, and some with no hat.

Hello world.

Living sans computer for two weeks is quite feat... I have been unable to process my photos, especially my 52 weeks project. I've shot the last month in film...and they're still at the devs because I didn't have time to pick them up before I left HK.

Still don't have my Retina Macbook yet... they're out of stock. :( Think I'll be getting it around mid-late August time. Bought my Tamron 90 macro, 17-50 and the EF 10-22 to YVR and hoping to shoot some good ones. Will try to keep my photostream going! Miss my poor neglected Flickr!

Mongol Derby Media Image (300 dpi)

The Mongol Derby launched in 2009 and has now run for 3 editions. The event sees riders attempt the official Longest Horse Race in the World, 1,000km across the wild Mongolian steppe on semi-wild horses.

Mongol Derby riders have raised a fantastic £226,710.74 for charity.

This magnificent ship has played host to some of the most famous people in the world. But, above all, she was home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. Now in Edinburgh you are welcome on board to discover the heart and soul of this most special of royal residences.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the world's most famous ships. Launched at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank in 1953, the Royal Yacht proudly served Queen and country for 44 years. During that time Britannia carried The Queen and the Royal Family on 968 official voyages, from the remotest regions of the South Seas to the deepest divides of Antarctica.

Britannia is now permanently moored in Edinburgh's historic port of Leith and visitors can discover what life was like on board the ship for the Royal Family and crew.

On 11 December 1997 Britannia was decommissioned and became a 5-star visitor attraction in Edinburgh after the city bid to become her new home and one of the UK's most prestigious hospitality venues.

A color version of this image appears elsewhere in my photostream, and I regard it as perhaps my best dance photo of all time. A 5x7 print of it sits in a frame atop the credenza in my office, and another framed 5x7 print adorns the receptionist's desk at the Chandler Fred Astaire studio. That one is immediately visible to anyone entering the studio, and it has generated some good publicity for that establishment, as well as for the photographer. A week or so ago I dropped by for a brief visit, and a student I barely knew came up to me, pointed to it, and said, "That's an AMAZING picture!"

This morning I posted a link to that photo on my Facebook page, where it generated some very nice comments. A couple of my friends suggested that I do a version in black and white, which at first I was disinclined to do because I just didn't want to tamper with something that was already so close to being perfect. But then I thought, why not? Accordingly, after all of about two minutes of processing in PSE 3.0, here's the black-and-white version for all the world to see. This one will be linked on my Facebook page as well, so we'll see what kind of feedback it generates.

Incidentally, a third framed copy of the color version was given to Miss Gergana, and it now forms part of the decor of the apartment she shares with Mr. Kralev.

Thornton Force

This was a very, very dull day, with low-lying fog just 30 metres or so above the fall, but the long exposure brought out the colours in the rocks and peaty water very nicely.

Thonrton Force is the most prominent (largest!) fall on the famous Ingleton Waterfalls Walk, which is a 4 mile walk starting and finishing in Ingleton, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK, and taking in a series of waterfalls in two gorges, as well as some open fellside at the base of Twisleton Scar.

View large - I left this on the dark side to emphasise the sinuous line of the water.

usually when i choose a picture to post i have a vague idea of what i want to write about it. on this occasion i haven't, my brain is pretty fried tonight and it feels like far too much effort to engage it properly. i quite like this image, and i think the processing, while not very subtle, suits it. beyond that i've nothing to add, so sorry about that. this photoblog will have to settle for just a photo.

For the last two days I've been on a photo archiving/organizing RAMPAGE. Not gonna lie, it's been pretty intense -- locked in my room (ok the door doesn't actually lock), sitting cross-legged in my desk chair, listening to everything from Sigur Rós to swing, & going through thousands of photos spread & duplicated over four hard drives. Needless to say, it's been mind-blowingly awesome. Well, it's been awesome. Mind-blowingly might be a tad excessive. But I've been finding so many old photosets that I shot years ago & forgot after uploading.

Like this one! I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "wow Dave, that's the most incredible abstract photograph I've seen all day, maybe even in all of 2009 to date, but what's the subject?" Well let me tell ya, I've got no idea. All I know is it was taken 2 minutes before a near macro of a Christmas light, so I'm guessing it's the Rapid City, South Dakota skyline. The source of the greens & cyans & reds & blues & purples so far remains a delightful quandary.

The only processing done was a slight increase in saturation to bring out the colors, & likewise for the contrast to get rid of some grey noise in the area I can only assume is the night sky.

It's pretty sweet on black too :)
