Letters from my collection. I'm not completely thrilled with the backwards letters and the duplication, but I recently found the lovely Q as well as the set of "bench letters" that enabled me to complete the alphabet, so I got impatient to do it with as much variety as I could muster at least. I can always do it again with more variety in the future sometime.

Marine Layer Clouds off the California Coast
earth image
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
NASA image acquired September 27, 2012

On September 27, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of low-lying marine layer clouds along the coast of California.

The image was captured by the VIIRS “day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as gas flares, auroras, wildfires, city lights, and reflected moonlight.

An irregularly-shaped patch of high clouds hovers off the coast of California, and moonlight caused the high clouds to cast distinct shadows on the marine layer clouds below. VIIRS acquired the image when the Moon was in its waxing gibbous phase, meaning it was more than half-lit, but less than full.

Low clouds pose serious hazards for air and ship traffic, but satellites have had difficulty detecting them in the past. To illustrate this, the second image shows the same scene in thermal infrared, the band that meteorologists generally use to monitor clouds at night. Only high clouds are visible; the low clouds do not show up at all because they are roughly the same temperature as the ground.

Black Marble - City Lights 2012
earth image
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
The night side of Earth twinkles with light, and the first thing to stand out is the cities. “Nothing tells us more about the spread of humans across the Earth than city lights,” asserts Chris Elvidge, a NOAA scientist who has studied them for 20 years.

This new global view and animation of Earth’s city lights is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The data was acquired over nine days in April 2012 and thirteen days in October 2012. It took satellite 312 orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of Earth’s land surface and islands. This new data was then mapped over existing Blue Marble imagery of Earth to provide a realistic view of the planet.

The nighttime view in visible light was made possible by the new “day-night band” of Suomi NPP’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite. VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights, auroras, wildfires, and reflected moonlight. This low-light sensor can distinguish night lights with ten to hundreds of times better light detection capability than scientists had before.

Named for satellite meteorology pioneer Verner Suomi, NPP flies over any given point on Earth&rsquos surface twice each day at roughly 1:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The polar-orbiting satellite flies 824 kilometers (512 miles) above the surface as it circles the planet 14 times a day. Data is sent once per orbit to a ground station in Svalbard, Norway, and continuously to local direct broadcast users around the world. The mission is managed by NASA with operational support from NOAA and its Joint Polar Satellite System, which manages the satellite's ground system.

Card For Jeremy & Katie's Wedding

Here's the card I made for my husband's cousin Jeremy's wedding. Yes, I am aware that the photo quality sucks. Sue me - I am still learning my way around the stupid digital camera. Stampin' Up products used include the following: cardstock (Almost Amethyst, Elegant Eggplant, and Pretty In Pink), ink (Pixie Pink), Stampin' Dimensionals, and the white organdy ribbon. The hearts were cut out using a die from my Sizzix machine, and the "Congratulations" stamp (which is hard to make out in this shot) isn't from SU. Also, the ridged medium-purple cardstock (on which the word "Congratulations" is stamped) isn't from SU, either. It's one of those ridge-y papers that looks awesome but doesn't handle ink well at ALL. :(

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

NYC: Morgan Library & Museum
photo library
The Morgan Library & Museum began as the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan, one of the preeminent collectors and cultural benefactors in the United States. As early as 1890 Morgan had begun to assemble a collection of illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints.

Mr. Morgan's library, as it was known in his lifetime, was built between 1902 and 1906 adjacent to his New York residence at Madison Avenue and 36th Street. Designed by Charles McKim of the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, the library was intended as something more than a repository of rare materials. Majestic in appearance yet intimate in scale, the structure was to reflect the nature and stature of its holdings. The result was an Italian Renaissance-style palazzo with three magnificent rooms epitomizing America's Age of Elegance. Based on the attic story of the Nymphaeum of 1555, built in Rome for Pope Juluis III, its facade of Tennessee marble was laid up without mortar centers on an entrance in the form of a Palladian arch. To either side are lions carved by Edward Clark Potter and roundels and panels by Andrew O'Connor and Adolph Weinman. The refined sumplicity of the exterior belies the richness of the interior. The colorful marble entrance hall is crowned by a domed ceiling adorned with murals and plasterwork by H. Siddons Mowbray. The East Library, which was Mowbry's study and called "one of the great achievements of American interior decoration," is dominated by triple tiers of bookcases and ornameted with lunettes by Mowbry.

Completed three years before McKim's death, it is considered by many to be his masterpiece. In 1924, eleven years after Pierpont Morgan's death, his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr., realized that the library had become too important to remain in private hands. In what constituted one of the most momentous cultural gifts in U.S. history, he fulfilled his father's dream of making the library available to all by transforming it into a public institution. Over the years—through purchases and generous gifts—The Morgan Library & Museum has continued to acquire rare materials as well as important music manuscripts, early children's books, Americana, and materials from the twentieth century.

Without losing its decidedly domestic feeling, the Morgan also has expanded its physical space considerably. In 1928, the Annex building, designed by Benjamin Wistar Morris, was erected on the corner of Madison Avenue and 36th Street, Pierpont Morgan's residence. The Annex connected to the original McKim library by means of a gallery. In 1988, J.P. Morgan, Jr.'s former residence, a mid-nineteenth century brownstone, was added to the complex. The 1991 garden court was constructed as a means to unite the various elements of the Morgan campus.

The largest expansion in the Morgan's Library's history, adding 75,000 square feet to the campus, was completed in 2006 after approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commision. Designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Renzo Piano, the project increased exhibition space by more than fifty percent and added important visitor amenities, including a new performance hall, a welcoming entrance on Madison Avenue, a new café and a new restaurant, a shop, a new reading room, and collections storage. Piano's design integrates the Morgan's three historical buildings with three new modestly scaled steel-and-glass pavilions. A soaring central court connects the buildings and serves as a gathering place for visitors in the spirit of an Italian piazza.

The Pierpont Morgan Library and Annex was designated as a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966. The interior was designated separately in 1982.

Mount Jerome is a forty-seven acre site in Harold's Cross just outside Dublin city, Mount Jerome is one of Dublin's most famous cemeteries, the other being Glasnevin on the north side. James Joyce's Ulysses mentions it. Mount Jerome has a large number of highly ornate crypts and memorials. These range from simple urns on columns, to broken columns and weeping angels to large imposing columned structures .Angels and urns are the most photographic especially with the toy camera. There is underground access to many of the crypts also worth photographing.

As well as the many Dubliners both protestant and catholic there are well known people also buried here including Sir William Wilde Oscar's father and members of the Guinness family, Martin Cahill known as the general is buried here. Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) members plot is there and the remains of the French Huguenots fare also buried here.

This image was taken on a toy camera the Holga on Ilford HP5 film and developed in Agfa Rodinal.

If you are in Dublin do put it on your list of places to visit.

My final version, at least for today, of a mosaic to commemorate today's release of the Lady Gaga Judas video.

In the video, Gaga mixes religious imagery with biker imagery, and she herself plays Mary Magdalene. Nevertheless, the video is not intended to be a statement on religion, but rather the singer's problematic return to a "bad-boy" ex-boyfriend.

I settled on this image from the Lady Gaga Judas video due to the rich reds and purples. I have uploaded the truly FULL SIZE version of this. It's ENORMOUS.

A former professor charged with viewing child pornography from his first-class seat on a commercial flight to Boston will be spared his jail sentence if he sticks to the terms of his probation.

Off the hook: Grant Smith, 50, a former engineering professor at the University of Utah, pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography on Thursday sparing him jail time

Smith, 50, was a University of Utah engineering professor, recently divorced, before he resigned from his position several weeks after his 2011 arrest and being placed on administrative leave.

A fellow first-class passenger reported Smith viewing pornographic images of young girls on his laptop during a November flight, according to prosecutors.

Delta passenger Kurt Wade, who broke down in tears while recounting the experience, took a cell phone photo of Smith viewing the pictures before alerting a flight attendant.

'He kept scrolling through the pictures and they became sexual and explicit,' Wade told Fox News.

'Little by little they were semi-nude, then completely nude. Just terrible, terrible stuff. It was kind of sad. Tough stuff to see,' he said.

Wade says Smith began to erase the files after a flight attendant told him to turn off his computer that was purchased with grant money while an adjunct professor.

'Even as I was trying to explain it [to an air steward], I broke down. I couldn't contain it. So disturbing what was going on,' said Wade.

He also alerted police himself, sending officers to greet their plane at its arrival at Boston Logan International Airport.

He added: 'When I was in the interview room with forensic computer police down the hall, they confirmed for me there were other images of sexual activity with grown ups.'

When asked if he considered himself a hero, he added: 'No. I think any common sense person would see this and understand what was going on.'

Speaking to the Associated Press, Wade added: ‘I feel bad for a lot of people but mostly for these innocent girls. He’s got two young kids and these kids are innocent victims of their father’s behaviour.’

Horrific: Fellow passenger Kurt Wade broke down in tears while recounting the disturbing images he saw on Smith's computer that he says grew worse and worse

Fox News

.........................
.

The images were mostly of girls between eight and 10 years old, naked or nearly naked, engaging in simulated sex acts.

'These weren't photos of a child in the bath that a parent might keep,' Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said of the images.

'These were explicitly sexual and extremely disturbing.'

Some of the pictures were of children as young as six, the prosecutor said.

All files were ones downloaded from a website but police say they also found photos on his cell phone of young girls seen in parks and airports.

Attorney and victim's advocate Wendy Murphy told WCVB at the time: 'The notion that someone would be so bold as to view it in public is extraordinary and I'm not sure what the explanation is.

'What we have is the equivalent of a confession. Someone who not only sees it but is smart enough to take a picture of it is very solid evidence.

'Reporting it immediately to law enforcement, law enforcement then being able to do their own immediate investigation - that's a very strong case - at least at this point.'

Investigators from Massachusetts State Police told NewsCenter 5's Cheryl Fiandaca that Smith was travelling to Boston to attend a conference for the Material Research Society.

Smith, a materials science and engineering professor, has two bachelor’s degrees and a doctorate, and had worked at the university for 14 years.

A Tallahassee mother red-flagged a chat on her daughter's Ipod and police wound up arresting the man on the other end.

Douglas Kersey is accused of transmitting harmful material to a minor.

Arrest papers say the 11 year old's mother discovered the chat and agreed to let police pose as the young girl on line.

Officers say Kersey requested a photo of the girl and had two sexually explicit conversations with the undercover officer.

When police searched Kersey's home in Tampa, arrest papers say, they found evidence of other chats and pictures of other girls between 10 and 15 years old.

Cats - Bangkok, Thailand

Some cool cat image images:

Cats - Bangkok, Thailand

Image by To Uncertainty And Beyond
Follow our journey around the world at To Uncertainty & Beyond.

The Maneki Neko, a Japanese sculpture, is often mistaken as a Chinese tradition. It is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture depicts a cat (traditionally a Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. In the design of the sculptures, a raised left paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised right paw protects it.

Maneki Neko is the subject of a number of legends. The legend of the old woman is a popular one.

An old woman living in Imado (eastern Tokyo) was forced to sell her cat due to extreme poverty. Soon afterwards the cat appeared to her in a dream. The cat told her to make its image in clay. She did as instructed, and soon afterward sold the statue. She then made more, and people bought them as well. They were so popular she soon became prosperous and wealthy.

HP ProLiant N36L mainboard

A few nice hp photo images I found:

HP ProLiant N36L mainboard
hp photo
The Hewlett-Packard Proliant N36L mainboard is a small affair, but remains expandable. The expansion capabilities (mouseover the photo to see notes):

● PCIe x1 slot, PCIe x16 slot
● Internal USB 2.0 port
● SATA port
● Two DDR3 DIMM slots

If I had to list some complaints with the design:

● The eSATA port faces outwards: it's not straightforward to reuse this port for an internal disk
● There is a PCIe x4 slot next to the x1, presumably for use with HP's proprietary management card. It's useless for anything else. I rather have had the placement reversed, i.e. the PCIe x4 facing outward so it were usable
● Not depicted in this photo: there is very little clearance for RAM. You need to use low-profile RAM without heatspreaders, otherwise it'll bump up against the case's drive rack.

If you're looking for more information, I've both a hardware review and software review of the N36L.
