August 30, 1945: Capt. Herbert Buchanan, RAN, receives the keys to the Yokosuka naval base - AWM.
online photo edit
5175. It looks ordered, but the tensions here must have been enormous. Bitter foes coming face-to-face, neither side knowing how the other will react, the Japanese half-expecting a massacre.

Thus, within moments, in a symbolic act of Japanese submission, the keys of the huge Yokosuka naval base near Yokohama, are handed to Captain Herbert James Buchanan, RAN, from Melbourne - the CO of destroyer HMAS NAPIER and Commander of the British Pacific Fleet's 7th Destroyer Flotilla - by Commander Yuzo Tanno, the officer in charge of stores at the base.

In some ways this is an awkward photograph historically, and one that does not appear in US records.

It is some short time later, before US Rear Admiral Robert B. Carney the U.S. Third Fleet Chief of Staff and Rear Admiral Roger C. Badger arrived on board the cruiser USS SAN DIEGO to formally receive the surrender of the base on behalf of the U.S. Navy from Vice Admiral Michitoro Totsuka, the base Commander. It should be stressed that US marines had landed elsewhere on the Azuma Peninsula first, and in fact the first probing advance parties of Carney's forces had been landing at defence points around Toyko Bay, and taking over Japanese batteries, for two days hence, since August 28.

Nonetheless, the seizure of Yokosuka was a critical part of the first major landings, and somehow Buchanan - typically of this aggressive and highly decorated destroyer captain - had got to Yokosuka first, striding ashore at the head of a force of some 80 Australian and New Zealand sailors mainly drawn from HMAS NAPIER and her sister ship HMAS NIZAM.

Buchanan's group appears to have been accompanied by at least one an official war correspondent John Pacini, but Pacini's report [below]] suggests others also - and there are several pages of photographs of these first scenes ashore in the Australian War Memorial. They can be found here:

www.awm.gov.au/search/collections/?conflict=second+world+...

An interesting account of the Buchanan group's arrrival at Yokosuka by correspondent Pacini is also published online by the Naval Historical Society of Australia.

Some edited extracts - which tie in with the AWM photographs - follow, but the full piece is here:

www.navyhistory.org.au/surrender-of-yokosuka-naval-base/

Pacini writes:

"....About 9.45 a.m.[US] marines landed at Azuma Peninsula, and at 10.40 the New Zealanders and Australians landed on the Japanese mainland at the Yokosuka base. Correspondents landed with Captain Buchanan. We left the APD [assault ...destroyer] in the usual type of landing craft, and after a few minutes travel, entered a small basin.

At the end of it, and waiting under a verandah, which was joined to the roof of a storehouse, stood three Japanese. As the landing craft sidled up to the small jetty, Captain Buchanan jumped ashore [making him the first Australian to land in Japan], and, with a guard behind him, went straight to where the three nervous Japanese were standing. They saluted Buchanan, who returned the compliment.

"Then a Japanese standing in the centre of the group bowed low, and handed over a large ring of keys, which opened every door in the area. This Japanese was a Naval Commander, who had been in charge of the stores depots of the base. The men on each side of him were interpreters. A guard of Australian sailors quickly formed up beside the Japanese...[describes dress of landing party] ....

"A table was erected quickly, and on it were placed the plans of the area which Buchanan studied in conjunction with the Japanese. The interpreters were good, and information was gathered quickly.

Although the landing was British, it might well have been Australian, judging from the scene around the table. The guard was Australian, and the whole of Captain Buchanan’s headquarters was composed of Australian naval officers, who had been taken from the destroyers NAPIER and NIZAM. Having made a thorough inspection of the maps, Captain Buchanan and his party began a tour of the area. Large files which the Japanese Commander had brought with him for perusal were handed over to an American Navy interpreter for translation..."

Further on, during a tour of base facilities, Pacini writes of the Japanese apprehension during this first encounter. He says: " Throughout the tour of the area almost all Japanese we saw were perceptibly shaken; and I don’t think any of them would have been surprised had we suddenly shot or bayoneted them...

"....When the Japanese commander realised that no harm was going to come to him, so long as no harm came to us, he began to smile more often. He became even more open with his information, and for a few minutes I was able to speak to him through an interpreter. He told me that the navy desired to attack Australia straight after the fall of Singapore, but the army preferred to move to Australia through New Guinea. The Army won..."

Photo, Australian War Memorial, image ID NO. 019422, listed copyright expired, public domain, it appears on the Wikipedia entry on the surrender of Yokosuka, and appeared in John Pacini's book 'With the RAN to Tokio' [Herald and Weekly Times Ltd, Melbourne 1946], p. 35.

Earthshine

A tonemapped version of the previous image where the Earthshine appears. The Earthshine is the dark part of the lunar disk that is illuminated by the solar light reflected back by the Earth, whereas the bright crescent is directly illuminated by the Sun.

The image was created and processed as followed:
-I took 130 exposures shot with 5 different exposure times, from 0.1s to 4s;
-I converted the RAW files to linear FITS files with Nebulosity and preprocessed them (subtraction of the camera offset, flat-field correction and subtraction of the sky background);
- I stacked the images in an HDR fashion using the IDL language;
-the crescent, almost 3000 times brighter than the Earthshine, cast a halo of light all over the image, which I had to remove with some sort of deconvolution process. Some residuals of this halo are still there, close to the terminator (separation bewteen the crescent and the Earthshine);
-I tonemapped the luminance channel in Photoshop, while conserving the colors (red- and blue-to-green ratios);
-finally, I changed the color balance so as to make the crescent appear grey in average.

Used autotone and autocontrast tool to make the picture look a little better as a whole. Selected the books, using the quick selection tool then made a "Layer via copy." Did the same thing for the boy in another layer. I sharpened books a lot, added drop shadow, increased brightness and contrast, changed curves.
Blurred the background and made it black and white.
Sharpened the boy, increased exposure, decreased offset. Cropped picture.

My plane arrived in the evening, and I went out immediately to start taking photos of the city. Just as I was getting into a groove, I received a text to come over to Neal Stephenson's house to help build a unique steampunk BBQ Grill. To this, I cannot say no. In this photo Neal looks on. We were all entranced by the moving fire ...

The story behind the image....
One evening I was scrolling through some photos I had recently taken of the sun peeking through some clouds. I was trying to think of something interesting to do with them, but I was tired and my mind was off line. But I found myself staring at one of the images and remembered a few shots I had of some cemetery statues of the Apostles. Long story short, I came up with this image with unusual ease and posted it on Flickr. But then, out of the blue for no apparent reason, I E-mailed the image to two acquaintances. The next time I saw these two people they each related that they were going through a difficult time and the arrival of this image lifted their spirits a great deal.

Indeed, God works in mysterious ways.

NY - Hyde Park: Franklin D Roosevelt House

it was in this room that Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on Monday, January 30, 1882. On that day his father wrote "at quarter to nine my Sarlie had a splendid large boy...bay weighed ten pounds without clothes." The furniture was moved to Sara's bedroom after the new wing was completed and then returned to this room after her death in 1941.

The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, New York preserves the Springwood estate--the birthplace, life-long home, and burial place of the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The Springwood estate was originally William Creed's part of the of the Great Nine Partners Patent. The central portion of the main house is formed by a large farmhouse, constructed around 1800 in the Federal Style. Josiah Wheeler, who purchased the estate in 1845, remodeled in Italianate Style with a 3-storey tower at the south end, and front and rear piazzas. In 1866, James Roosevelt, FDR's father, bought the 2.5 km2 estate, including a stable and horsetrack, for k and over the next 34 years, enlarged the servants' wing, added two rooms, and built a carriage house.

Roosevelt was born in what was then the master bedroom on second floor tower at the south end of the house, nearby his childhood bedroom. After marrying Eleanor Roosevelt in 1905, the young couple moved in with his mother, Sarah. In 1915, they hired the Hoppin and Koen to remodel the home, doubling it in size with two large fieldstone wings (designed by FDR), a tower, and a third storey with a flat roof. Restyled in Colonial Revival, the clapboard exterior was replaced with stucco and most of the porch was replaced with a fieldstone terrace with a balustrade and a small columned portico

The estate remained the center of Roosevelt's life and career, functioning as both a retreat and a "Summer White House". Springwood hosted prominent national and international figures, such as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the first visit of a reigning British monarch to the United States, and its porch was the setting of all of FDR's acceptance speeches. Roosevelt made made his last visit to Springwood in the last week of March 1945, about two weeks before his death. At his own wish, he was buried near the sundial in the Rose Garden on April 15, 1945. Eleantor was buried at his side after her death in 1962.

The Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site also includes the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library--the first of the United States' presidential libraries.

BBC World Service: site launch

This post is blogged at: dharmafly.com/blog/bangladeshboat

Phew! Dharmafly has been busy these last three weeks! From commission to launch in just 12 working days (and nights)...

The Bangladesh River Journey is a mashup of posts from a BBC World Service trip to track the effects of climate change in Bangladesh. The trip lasts a month, with photos being posted to Flickr, messages sent to Twitter and journal entries made on the World Service site. The mashup puts all these posts on to a map, letting you navigate around and follow the trip.

The journalists are equipped with a GPS navigation device. Each time they visit a new location, they post their co-ordinates to the Twitter stream (e.g. this post). Our system then logs the coordinates and applies them to every photo, tweet and diary entry until the next location.

In addition to what you see in the browser, there are a number of gems hidden under the hood... (Non-techie folk may happily skip this :)

Microformats
Microformats are new, developing standards for adding extra meaning to the HTML of a web page. They create all sorts of possibilities for software (from search engines to browsers) to interact with the content in new and useful ways.

The HTML for each Twitter, Flickr and diary post in the Bangladesh River Journey is written using the hAtom microformat. This means, for example, that an RSS feed can be generated directly from the HTML on the page.

If you use the Firefox browser, you can explore other microformats on the Bangladesh Boat site, with the excellent Operator extension. You'll find xFolk bookmarks, geo locations, hCard contacts and tagged links.

GeoRSS
The site's RSS feed allows users to stay up-to-date with new posts, without needing to re-visit the site (we talked about using RSS in a previous post).

The feed is encoded with the geo coordinates of each post (this is called GeoRSS). Some interesting things can then be done with the feed, such as plotting it straight on to Google Maps.

API
Part of the task was to build an API - a way for web developers to access the data in the system, to create their own mashup applications. This will be promoted through BBC Backstage - the BBC's hub for exploring new media technology.

Olympic Opening Ceremony celebrates ‘One World, One Dream’

Date Posted: 8/12/2008

Photos and Story by Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

(Cleared for public release)

EDITOR'S NOTE: The U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) provides soldier-athletes the opportunity to compete toward qualifying for the United States Olympic team. Qualified soldiers must be nationally ranked in their chosen sport and be certified by the United States Olympic Committee at a world class level. Athletes join the program at least three years before the Olympic Trials. To be eligible for the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, soldiers must currently be a member of the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. Soldiers must also be eligible to represent the USA in international competitions and demonstrate the potential to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team or U.S. Paralympic Team.

BEIJING – The elaborate Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad featured a display of China’s long and distinguished history and culture intertwined with the “One World, One Dream” theme of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

“Beijing, you are host to the present and the gateway to the future,” International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge proclaimed before a sellout crowd of 91,000 at National Stadium on Aug. 8. “Thank you.”

An audience of 400,000,000 was expected to watch the spectacle on television.

“Friends have come from afar, how happy we are,” is a well-known saying of Confucius (551 BC-479 BC), a famous Chinese educator and thinker whose thoughts deeply influenced later generations.

U.S. President Bush and wife Laura were among more than 80 world dignitaries in attendance, along with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bush became the first U.S. president to attend an Olympic Games outside of the United States while serving as Commander in Chief. His father, George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president, also made history by occupying the chair of Chef de Mission of the U.S. Olympic Team, marking the first time the U.S. Olympic Committee has had an honorary chief of the mission.

The four-hour extravaganza featured 110 minutes of music, beginning with the fou, the most ancient Chinese percussion instrument made of clay or bronze. Manned by 2,008 performers, the fou-produced sound of rolling spring thunder greeted friends from all over the world.

The music was specially created by 18 composers for a production that displayed 15,153 sets of costumes in 47 styles. Some of the performers rehearsed for 13 months in preparation for one of China’s most magical nights.

Six hundred people were involved in the installation, direction, and safety supervision for a display of 11,456 fireworks set off from from 287 points atop the stadium and 8,428 more from 27 positions in the central area. Another 1,462 glowing and sparkling fireworks illuminated the upper rim of the stadium.

Gunpowder was invented in China during the Song Dynasty (960 AD-1276 AD). People used the ingredients for gunpowder as medicines for illnesses in ancient times; hence the name “gunpowder,” means “burning medicines.” The invention of gunpowder is one of China’s outstanding achievements in the history of human civilization that changed the course of world history.

A painting scroll revealed the origin and development of China’s history and culture. Paper is another of the four great inventions of ancient China. As one child sang “A Hymn to My Country,” 56 children clustered around the National Flag of the People’s Republic of China to represent the country’s 56 ethnic groups. Immediately following, the famous Chinese painting “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” was visible on the stadium floor while the ancient stringed instrument, Guqin, provided the “Sounds of Utmost Antiquity.”

Cliff painting, earth pottery and bronze vessels were displayed to reflect artistic developments of the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC-1046 BC) and Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-221 BC).

The Great Wall was illustrated by smooth lines, both concise and vivid, with peach blossoms, romantic and enjoyable, that illustrated the sweet wishes of peace-loving Chinese people.

The “Silk Road” was an important vehicle for economic and cultural exchange between China and Western countries. More than 2,000 years ago, trade caravans of China set out from Chang’an (now Xi’an in Shaanxi Province) with expensive silk, crossed the Hexi Corridor, and entered the European continent.

More than 600 years ago, Zheng He of Ming Dynasty led seven shipping fleets with 27,000 people aboard a long voyage from Quanzhou that arrived in Western Asia and Eastern Africa, thus creating the well-known “Maritime Silk Road.” On opening night, a performer held an ancient compass, another of the four great inventions of ancient China.

In a later segment, Chinese pianist Lang Lang and 5-year-old Li Muzi welcomed a brand-new age. Lang is the first Chinese pianist to have long-term cooperation with first-class orchestras in Berlin and Vienna. He has played recitals in many of the most famous music halls in the world. During that performance, the kite was introduced as another Chinese invention.

An exhibition of Taiji manifested the integration of traditions and the future by illustrating the unity of man and nature. Taijiquan is the most representative shadow boxing among Chinese martial arts, characterized by the “combination of the dynamic and static and the interdependence of hardness and softness.”

The Eight Diagrams of Taiji symbolize eight natural phenomena – heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and swamp – that represent the changes of all things on earth. A total of 2,008 Taiji performers formed a circle that illustrated grandness and consummation in the traditional Chinese concept.

As the program progressed, the smiling faces of children from around the world demonstrated the theme of “One World, One Dream.” A gigantic, 16-ton globe arose from the floor, adorned with 58 actors running on nine rings covered with an Olympic Torch pattern. The runners seemingly were free from gravity and full of magic, fantasy and bravery.

The march of nations featured Olympic athletes from 205 countries, led into the stadium by Greece (in accordance with tradition). The host team from China concluded the march of nations.
As Team USA entered they clearly received the loudest ovation of the evening – until Houston Rockets basketball star Yao Ming led the Chinese contingent into the stadium.

The throng representing 596 U.S. athletes occupied more than 100 meters of the running track. As U.S. Flag Bearer Lopez Lomong was rounding the turn, members of Team USA were still filing into the arena from the opposite end of the stadium.

After eight Chinese Olympians carried the Olympic Flag into the stadium, the banner was raised and The Olympic Anthem was played. Athletes' and officials' oaths were read, symbolic doves were released, and the Olympic Torch Relay concluded a 33-day journey abroad that covered 97,000 kilometers across five continents and 21 countries.

Chinese Olympic gymnast Li Ning ran 500 meters in about three minutes around the wall of the open-air stadium’s inner roof in what was possibly the most fascinating sight of the night. Supported by a cable, Ning at times appeared to be running on air before lighting the cauldron.

“Many would say that the Olympic Games are of great significance and have profound meanings,” said opening ceremony artistic director Zhang Yimou. “But I once heard someone say: ‘They are all our guests. We should make them happy.’”

"This answer, simple as it is, tells us that we are of one big family. The Opening Ceremony demonstrates the same spirit as we find in the theme song of the ceremony: You and me, from one world; we are family.

“I have never led such a huge team, with so many performers, staff and volunteers. You may not be able to see their faces clearly in this grand stadium and their names may not be printed on this beautiful brochure, but I know how hard they worked for tonight. At this very moment, what do they want to say to you, our distinguished guests, and to the audience all over the world? There is only one simple sentence: ‘From the bottom of my heart, I hope you will enjoy yourselves.’”

SPARTA — A woman wearing only an unzipped jacket was charged with driving while intoxicated after she allegedly crashed into a stone wall and fled the scene, police said.

A resident of Grove Terrace in the Lake Mohawk section of the township contacted police at 12:53 a.m. on Friday to report that a white Volkswagon Jetta had just crashed into a stone retaining wall on her property and then fled the scene, according to Sgt. John-Paul Beebe

Officer Joseph Pensado, who was in the area on routine patrol, saw the vehicle a short time later on West Shore Trail so he conducted a motor vehicle stop.

Despite the near freezing temperatures, the officer was surprised to find that the operator, Catherine Giaquinto, 36, of Warwick, N.Y., was only wearing an unzipped leather jacket, Beebe said.

Pensado spoke to Giaquinto and suspected she was under the influence of alcohol. When asked why she was driving in the nude, Giaquinto denied being completely naked, Beebe said.

The officer observed fresh damage to the left front fender, driver’s side door and the rear left passenger’s door which was consistent with the damaged retaining wall.

Giaquinto’s speech was badly slurred and mostly unintelligible. She could not remember if she had been involved in an accident and did not know where she was going, Beebe said.

The officer observed a dress and other articles of clothing in plain view on the rear passenger seat of the vehicle. He retrieved these items and directed Giaquinto to get dressed. It took approximately 10-minutes for Giaquinto to put her clothes on and when she wsa done, the officer noted that she had put her dress on inside out and backwards, Beebe said.

After Giaquinto was dressed, she was then directed to exit her motor vehicle to attempt to perform a series of field sobriety tests. Due to her high level of intoxication, Giaquinto could not maintain her balance by simply standing still and listening to the officer’s instructions, Beebe said.

These tests were terminated by the officer a short time later for Giaquinto’s own safety. She was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for processing and breath testing, Beebe said.

During processing, Giaquinto became argumentative and disorderly. She was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath testing, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, careless driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and a documentation violation

She was released several hours later to a sober adult and her vehicle was impounded.

The nearly-nude driver arrested for crashing her car into a wall while wearing only an unzipped leather jacket was once jailed for smuggling ecstasy in her underwear, MailOnline can reveal today.

Brunette fitness instructor Catherine Giaquinto, 36, was part of a courier ring convicted of sneaking into the U.S. a staggering amount of the illegal party drugs in 2000.

Giaquinto, whose address is linked to a fitness service called Rising vitality Services, was sentenced to 23 months in jail for hiding cash in her clothes while flying to Europe, then bringing 10,000 ecstasy pills back through Newark Airport.

Giaquinto’s latest run in with the law unfolded on Friday night when a Sparta Township, New Jersey, police officer pulled over her damaged Volkswagen Jetta at 12.53am.

Despite the freezing 16 degree temperature, the 36-year-old was wearing next to nothing.

She allegedly told Officer Joseph Pensado she had no memory of crashing into a nearby wall and did not know why she was driving in just a tiny jacket.

Shocking, sensual and dramatic, this 1968 theatrical sensation is one of Joe Sarnos most compelling dramas - an erotic tale of lust and obsession, about an ambitious photographer, his love, and the sensual and manipulative woman who comes between them: Henning is a fashion photographer driven by visions of artistic glory. He is encouraged by a literary agent to produce a volume of erotic nudes and works to create the perfect layout with his favorite model, Leslie.

All seems to be going well until the mysterious Joyce appears; dark and sensual, Joyce plays games with the photographers ego, driving a wedge between Henning and Leslie and seducing one of his other models. Blinded by his own ambitions, Henning is unable to see the ruinous web that Joyce is weaving.

Joseph Wurzelbacher, the Ohio man made famous for an exchange with then-presidential candidate Barack Obama outside his house in 2008, has filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to run for Congress in Ohio's 9th District.

Wurzelbacher filed on Friday and now has completed the paperwork for "Joe for Congress 2012," his official campaign committee.

The Toledo Blade reported in August that several Ohio Republicans were encouraging him to run, and Wurzelbacher said he was open to the idea, but this is the first official step toward announcing his candidacy. When reached by phone, Wurzelbacher said he was "exploring the possibilities," but the documents show that a campaign is in the works.

"Maybe we need some regular guys in there," Wurzelbacher told The Ticket in August. "That's what I've been doing the past two and a half years, just encouraging regular Americans to run. Tell the liberal media to go to hell and I don't care what you guys say about me, I'm going to try to fix this country."

Wurzelbacher has spent the past three years speaking at tea party rallies and conservative conferences. He most recently helped start an organization for wounded veterans.

Capital New York was the first to report the filings.

FutureExBanker, wrote in a now-deleted post: ‘I work in the corporate office of a major bank for a boss who represents everything wrong with the financial industry.’

The blogger said that his boss will tip exactly one per cent of the bill ‘every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness.’

One more thing: He wrote in another 'tip' and told server Breanna to 'get a real job'

The disgruntled employee continued: ‘(My boss) has blatant disregard and outright contempt for everyone and everything he deems beneath him.

‘On top of that,’ the banker wrote,’ he’s a complete and utter tool.’

WE ARE THE 99 PER CENT

...'We are the 99 per cent' was runner up to 'occupy' for 2011's word of the year. The phrase is closely tied to the Occupy Wall Street movement, and states that one per cent of Americans have a disproportionate amount of wealth.

...The Wall Street Journal states that someone must be making at least 6,000 before joining the elite one per cent of top American earners.

While servers often receive the brunt of a diner’s anger in form of a low or non-existent tip, it is customary to tip a minimum of 15 per cent for good service.

A hostess for True Food Kitchen told LAList.com that she had heard about the receipt but could neither confirm nor deny if it was real, nor if she remembered the customer.

‘We have no statement on the issue,’ she said.

Vice President of operations for True Food Kitchen told the Huffington Post that the receipt in question is real, but they’re in the process of tracking him down.

Mr Wilcox added the restaurant will do ‘everything they can to make it up to (Breanna) somehow.’

Books over 300 years old in Chetham's Library at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, England. It's amazing to think that they existed long before the United States was even founded.

Wormsloe, the Endless Forest of Savannah - 16,000 pixels wide!

My Biggest Photo Ever and Flickr can't handle it
The TIFF of the photo below is 984 megs, and the JPG is 124 megs! It's about 16,000 pixels across and very fun to zoom in on as you go down the lane. I dropped it to 12,000 pixels so I could upload, but, I feel a little short-changed!

You can see the Original Size below...

I wish Flickr would offer a premium subscription where I could post huge photos. I'd gladly pay 0 a year for a premium subscription that gets me all sorts of extra features, like big photos, high quality videos like my Vimeo sub, tier 1 tech support, and all sorts of other goodies.

Another Forest Photo, Hanging at HQ of Flickr Competitor

The fine people at Smugmug (see my port there at stuckincustoms.smugmug.com/) have chosen my Bamboo Forest photo to hang inside their headquarters in California. They are actually building a 60" lightbox behind it. I'll see it in person in a few weeks when I go visit the crew there. I'm looking forward to it!

Daily Photo - Wormsloe, the Endless Forest of Savannah
My friend Scott Kublin (who made it to my Favorites page on my iPhone... he was at the bottom, but I just moved him up above the babysitter) lives in Savannah, so it was good to visit him on my little road trip. He commented that regular visitors to Stuck In Customs would probably like to see current shots while I am traveling around! So, here it is! However, this one took about 3-4 hours to edit, five cups of coffee, and several pieces of pie. Did you see my little "Buy Trey Chocolate For Energy" there in the right column? Yes, I burn through copious calories to create these things. This one almost broke my back, but I am very happy with it.

Some of you may remember this place from Forest Gump... A lot of it was shot down in Savannah. Besides Wormsloe, I also visited some amazingly moody cemeteries, draped in mossy trees. I'll get to editing those photos another time... maybe when I get back home to Texas!

The Infinite Stairs to the Oubliette

This is one of the areas where the French kept Marie Antoinette in the conciergerie. There were many mysterious parts of these chambers, and this was one of the most interesting.

I one time designed a set of stairs like this back in the day with a Quake level editor. There was a website where you could upload your creations that could be shared by other level designers. I uploaded my stairs, but I don't know if they were ever used or not. I thought I saw them in E1M4, but then I realized that those stairs were actually 5x better than mine.
