Space shuttle Discovery, mounted atop a NASA 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) flies near the U.S. Capitol, Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Washington. Discovery, the first orbiter retired from NASA’s shuttle fleet, completed 39 missions, spent 365 days in space, orbited the Earth 5,830 times, and traveled 148,221,675 miles. NASA will transfer Discovery to the National Air and Space Museum to begin its new mission to commemorate past achievements in space and to educate and inspire future generations of explorers.

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Special thanks to our spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon judges! And congratulations to the winners of the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon!

New Zealand
image
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
NASA image acquired March 30, 2011

On March 30, 2011, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite passed over New Zealand just as the clouds parted, and captured this striking view of the greens of very early fall.

Near the top of the image, snow covers the highest peaks of the North Auckland (Northland) Peninsula. About half-way down the western shore of the peninsula lies Kaipara Harbor, a large estuary/harbor complex that opens to the Tasman Sea, and offers a diverse array of ecotones and habitats which provide food and housing for many species, especially migratory birds.

Of the two main islands of New Zealand, North Island is the most volcanically active, with a large volcanic plateau running roughly southwest to northeast through North Island’s mainland. The large blue ring of Lake Taupo can be seen near the center of this plateau. The lake is actually nestled in the caldera of one of the world’s most active supervolcanoes.

North Island is separated from South Island by Cook Strait, which is 14 miles (22 km) wide at the narrowest point. South Island is noted for the Southern Alps, which form a snow-and-glacier-covered spine near the western coast. Bright blue glacial lakes lie on the eastern side of the mountains, holding cold meltwater as it flows from the mountains to the South Pacific Ocean via the many rivers of the region.

Multnomah Falls (Preconceived Ideas)
photo ideas
Preconceived Ideas
On my drive up to the Spokane area of Washington, we spent a morning in the Columbia River Gorge in hopes to see some waterfalls. Unfortunately it was pouring rain so we had to deal with the rain and all the mist from the swollen waterfalls. It was challenge to say the least!

Having seen hundreds of photos of Multnomah Falls, I had sort of painted a picture in my mind what it would feel like to see it in person. Really the photos don't really compare to the real thing. The first thing that caught me off guard was how close the waterfall is to the viewing platform. See, this waterfall is so tall and in your face, that I couldn't capture this in a single frame. I did a vertarama using about six horizontal shots to get it all in. Consequentially, the leaning lines effect at the top is very pronounced. The treas and even the top waterfall feel like they're leaning back, but believe me they're up close and personal.

+Crystal Leslie and I took turns holding umbrellas for each other. Still it was a shoot, wipe shoot wipe shoot wipe kind of deal. It was a lot of work and I wasn't sure if I got anything until I got home. It's a beautiful waterfall to see and really tough to shoot, because there really aren't any opportunities for creativity. We were there at dawn so we had it all to ourselves so that was nice.

Memorial to the Mutineers of the Battleship Potemkin
image website

Odessa, Ukraine.

The Potemkin (Russian: Князь Потёмкин Таврический, Knyaz’ Potyomkin Tavricheski, ‘Prince Potyomkin of Tauris’) was a pre-dreadnought battleship (Bronenosets) of the Imperial Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. The ship was made famous by the Battleship Potemkin uprising, a rebellion of the crew against their oppressive officers in June 1905 (during the Russian Revolution of 1905). It later came to be viewed as an initial step towards the Russian Revolution of 1917, and was the basis of Sergei Eisenstein's silent film The Battleship Potemkin (1925).

Following the mutiny in 1905, the ship's name was changed to Panteleimon after Saint Pantaleon, but restored to Potemkin in 1917, before a final rename to Boretz za Svobodu (Fighter for Freedom) later in that year.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_battleship_Potemkin

Not as good a photo as I would like. This was taken back in my film days, then later scanned. Maybe someday I'll make it back to Odessa. It's really not all that far from Kiev.

I used one picture for all the effects just for consistency for comparison. The title for each photo consists of the category of the effect and the name of the effect. Some effects would be better used on a different image. There are some effects also that appear to do the same thing in different effect categories.

紅頭山雀.攝於台灣 台中縣 武陵農場
Red-Headed Tit, taken at Wuling Farm, Taichung County, TAIWAN

快一點!by Fish

This hilarious title was provided by a member on flickr.com. People who see it can’t help giggling. The truth behind the image: Being unable to stand the searing sun, the Red Headed Tits hop toward the water spilling from a reservoir at the left of the scene for a cold shower. The one on the right seems to have exhausted its patience and hastens its partner as if saying, “Hurry up, hurry up!”

Mission San Juan
upload photos
Kind of a late upload but I just got back from the Tiesto concert here in San Antonio :) Now I have 3 hours before I have to wake up for school :(

The missions are something new to me for the most part. I went to Mission San Jose as I was kid for a field trip back in Elementary but like most on the trip all we cared about was not being in school. Now that I'm older and free to drive where ever and when ever I find that I'm just to lazy to go far. Sure I'll drive 1/2 hr away but I do that everyday for school and work and it gets boring after a while. Having to drive an hour to get to these missions seems crazy to me but I find that I must in order to photograph something new.

The things I do to satisfy my hunger for HDR...

Sesan in the Morning

I've been uploading a lot of photos of the Sesan River recently, for no reason other than my job has taken me up there quite a bit. The Se San is way up in the Northeast Corner of Ratanakiri, near the Virachey National Park and the Dragon's Tail (that's what the remote upper Northeast corner of Cambodia is called—I guess it kinda looks like a dragon's tail?). Last week I spent nearly the whole week up on the Se San.

Here's a shot of the Sesan during the cool of the morning. I was supposed to meet a Kreung man, and snapped some pics while I was bored as I waited for him to show up.

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".
