deliberate, ponder, think, a meditation piece... [in a wallpaper rotation series, schedule your desktop background wallpaper switching interval on a boundary which corresponds with a "break" -- the image is designed for a mental escape, obtuse to stimulate a daydream.)

hope you enjoy this series of desktop background wallpapers.

these images are created for a 1.6:1 aspect ratio. the image resolution is 2560x1600, use a setting such as center or fit if you are using a different resolution.

this series is comprised of images i like and personally use as my desktop background. if there are other images in my stream you'd like to see as backgrounds send me a note.

Baby European Starling

A few nice baby picture images I found:

Baby European Starling
baby picture
I don't know what kind of baby this is, but here is the story -

I looked out my porch door and saw a bird flapping and falling out of a tree. I thought it was injured. I went outside to check on it and take photos, and it was hopping around pecking the ground and didn't seem hurt.

I started taking pictures and moving closer and it wasn't scared at all, and I knew it was a baby. I sat down in the grass a little ways away, hoping to protect it from any stray cats and also to encourage it to move back toward the trees because it was getting dark.

After about 2 minutes of exploring the ground, it started looking up at the trees anxiously and making flapping motions trying to fly up. It was so sad! I moved further away in case the mama bird was nearby and could feed or encourage it, but he hopped right toward me! I tried to get it to go the other way without touching it.

After a few minutes, it finally hopped to the trees and got up to a low branch, but kept hopping between branches and trying to hold on toward the end where it wasn't stable and would bend. It hopped up and fell down several branches a few times, and eventually got about 10 ft up in the tree and I took some more pictures. Then, it put its head under its wing and took a little nap - it was hard work climbing bendy branches!

So I watched from a distance for a long time so I could shoo away anything that came close looking predatory. Eventually a few adult birds came nearby, but they were fighting with each other and I don't think they even knew the baby was there. He started hopping up a little more, and I lost sight of him, so I hope he got to a nest, but I have a feeling he was just hiding behind the leaves since he couldn't have gotten far.

If he can stay up in the trees for the night, I think he'll be OK. He couldn't fly at all though and I think he fell or jumped out of his nest too early!

I have videos and will put them up when I get a chance!

What kind of bird do you think it is? I'm thinking Mockingbird but really don't know.

I loved the big version of this quilt. Then it hit me....it would (or could) be an interesting baby blanket! I have to say...in person this is the CUTEST, pictures cannot do it justice! (can you tell I like it?)

Just a lightweight, flannel backed, machine quilted minni version of my twin quilt.

This iPhone Background (640x960 wallpaper) is released under a Creative Commons license.
If you like this image, please leave a comment. Thanks!

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

L REBOZO
Por Gabriel del Río Ortiz

El rebozo mexicano
se fue a la sierra sin miedo,
rayo de luz en la noche,
virginal azul de incienso.
Terciado por los caminos
que descienden de los senos,
nostalgia de plumas de ave
en el leve rapacejo.
Se fue a la revolución
porque era parte del pueblo
y hacía suyas sus desdichas
y compartía sus anhelos.
El rebozo nunca quiso
vivir con los privilegios,
sino compartir el pan
y la sal del sufrimiento
Un día llegó por los mares:
lo traían en cautiverio,
venía en la Nao de China,
su prisión y su sendero
y brillaban con la luna
los caminos de sus flecos.
Era mantón de Manila
que llegaba a mundos nuevos,
serpientes de cascabel
y peces de cuerpo entero
con escamas relucientes
traía el chal aventurero.
Cien mil gusanos de seda
en un moral le habían hecho
su cuerpo de lluvia fina
y el rocío de sus dedos.
Llegó a hurtadillas, sin ruido,
por el misterioso piélago
y se convirtió en huipil
y en mantilla de paseo,
punto de cruz, chupamirto
y receptor de luceros.
Salió de la alcaicería
en su cajita de cedro,
pero a través de un anillo
pasó su cuerpo primero,
cuerpo dúctil, serpentino,
corporización del viento.
En Santa María del Río
subió a la ermita del cerro
y se entregó a la doncella
el día de su casamiento
y le rodeó la cintura
con sus largos dedos tersos
y le acarició los hombros
y se le prendió en el pecho
El rebozo de bolita
brilló bajo el sol de enero;
se vistió de plata y oro
en el matinal paseo
y presenció los rubores
nacidos del primer beso.
Asistió a la fiesta brava
y también al jaripeo
y en Veracruz se anudó
en mágico zapateo;
fue a salones elegantes
con damas y caballeros
de la rancia aristocracia
del México palaciego.
El aroma de Oaxaca
lo impregnó en caminos viejos
y una ollita de mezcal
lo volvió dicharachero;
luego bailó la sandunga
con ritmo, gracia y salero
y con el son jalisciense
echó sus penas al viento
y se humedeció los labios
con rompope del convento
en Puebla, donde los ángeles
de añil tiñeron al cielo.
Pero no se sintió a gusto
con aquello ajetreos
y prefirió ser abrigo,
cuna y mortaja del pueblo
y compartir sus tristezas
y ser su fiel compañero,
lo mismo al tomar las armas
que al rezar el Padre Nuestro,
en el hambre y la quimera,
en el cruel alumbramiento
y en el callado camino
a reunirse con sus muertos.
Para ese rebozo amigo
es el cincel de mis versos
porque lleva entre sus pliegues
carnes morenas del pueblo
y trenzas bien apretadas
de negro y frondoso pelo,
porque es un paño de lágrimas
y cruz en el cementerio;
porque en medio de las balas
sube a la sierra, sin miedo,
rayo de luz en la noche
¡virginal azul de incienso!

sol,y rebozo

Ancient and Modern (aka "Digital Printouts" and Writing Secure Systems)
digital picture frames
Digital Printouts.
I often find it funny to use the old reflex camera with films, but I mostly use it as if it was a digital one: I make many shots, some are good some are bad - I don't bother printing them, I just let it develop and I scan the pictures I like from the film (several ones are even posted here this way).
I have even been talking about this with fellow flickerer's: www.flickr.com/groups/romamor/discuss/72157600009019234/p...

On the opposite, it often happens that I want to print some photos made with the digital camera. So I take them to the shop on the Compact Flash, or more often on a USB pen drive.

Today, tough, something strange happened: the machine they use to print digital photos (some very big professional system for printing on photographic paper with a proprietary application which manages it) hanged while it was trying to load this one photo which was on the USB pendrive.

The guy at the shop got panicked: he said a week earlier a guy got the machine infected with a Virus through his USB pen, and he had to stop working for three days, spend a lot of money to get the system reinstalled...

I tried to tell him to close the application but he did not even get what I was talking about. He was saying that the system was not responsive... I was pretty sure the system WAS responsive, it was just the APPLICATION which was hanging, and since it looked like an NT-based system I tried to guide him through CTRL+ALT+DEL, to start "Task Manager", kill the application (this whole procedure took several minutes, and I had to show him which keys I was talking about as he was abel to find "ALT" but he had never hear of CTRL, left alone "DEL"). It was a Windows2000 Professional... so I wondered how did he logged in if he did not know that key combination..... I asked how did he get in when he started the machine.... "it opens automatically" he said. I see. I though it must be configured for autologon then. After killing the application he asked "how do I get out of this now??" "This" being Windows Explorer... I mean, the desktop. I pulled out my USB pendrive he was afraid of, I helped him reboot. He was nervous and he said it took much longer than normal to start up (I don't believe ONE word of it, it just took much less time than my laptop with Vista takes to start up... but he was worried and that makes one anxious and makes time flow slower). He was afraid and nervous that the "thing" could have been broken somehow by trying to load a JPEG...
NOTHING made him confident about me: I tried to reassure him I am an IT Professional, that I work for Microsoft (unfortunately I did not have my business cards with me today, that would have probably helped!), that I put my hands on much more complex and "missioncritical" systems, that I would not bring him any virus whatsoever and I am paranoid about computer security...
Nothing. Nothing worked to re-assure him that there wasn't anything to worry about my pen...

While the machine started I saw it doing AutoAdminLogon with Administrator... with a password of TWO characters.
Oh my god!
Then he wonders that he gets viruses from strangers. He runs as Administrator all the time!!!

But then I though and asked... "is there maybe a LIMIT on the SIZE of the file?". "Of course there is!".
Right.

Since the photo I wanted to print is actually a composition made of two photos pasted together, and each of the original was a 8 Megapixel photo, the resulting is a 16 Megapixel picture, a JPG file of roughly 8 megabytes in size. Well, this days it isn't much anyway. We nearly have cameras which produce files with that high resolution...
..but if THAT application has a limit... WHY on earth doesn't it CHECK for the bloody SIZE of the file BEFORE trying to load it ?

I mean, those are professional systems which - he said - cost around 150 THOUSAND of Euros... which they let run with an application which does NOT do any input checking/validation, runs the whole time as Administrator... while letting people bring in their own CD-ROMs, USB pens, flash memory cards....
and they expect it to be safe?

Now the guy was panicked and wouldn't let me plug my pen it again.

Then he's close in the afternoon, and I need that photo (and other ones) for tomorrow, because tomorrow it is my grandad's 91st birthday and I wanted to bring them printed for him and framed as a present!

Morale: I have to find another place to print them in the afternoon, in a rush, because some company sells print systems which are written like crap, which need to run as Administrator and won't do any input validation in their code. This is one of those situations where a design flaw matters.

Put this image up last night to see what it looked like, since I do not have my sacred iMac and I am in San Diego with my personal PC laptop. No Photoshop on this laptop, so I edited with my favorite, free image editor (PhotoFiltre). I can't tell the true colors or contrast with this laptop, so I did the best I could and decided to look at it today on the conference public access computer station Macs. It was not too far off, so I took this image that was private and changed it to a public view. Same for the previous image, two of my work colleagues seen hanging off their balcony at our hotel. We are at the Beach Cottages in San Diego, right on the beach. Woohoo! I don't get much time to take photos here since I am really hitting the sessions hard, but I suspect I will find time just before I check out of the hotel this weekend to have another go at photos. Love love love going to bed at night with the patio door cracked so I can hear the ocean waves all night.
