Cislago divenne feudo dei Visconti nel XIII secolo. Interessato suo malgrado dalla calata dei Lanzichenecchi svizzeri nel 1505, il castello fu raso al suolo, perché importante crocevia fra CastelSeprio, Como, Milano e Stazzona(Angera). Il nuovo castello venne ricostruito aggiungendo due bracci laterali e ricostruendo le due torri, di cui una insolitamente pentagonale. Il paese crebbe e passò nel 1620 a Cesare Visconti che restaurò il castello in stile barocco. Nel XVIII secolo il feudo di Cislago (un tutt'uno di territori collegati a Castelseprio passò alla nobile famiglia di origine trentina dei Castelbarco che, divisi in numerosi rami collaterali, abitano ancora parte del castello

Cislago is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 25 km northwest of Milan and about 20 km southeast of Varese. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 9,118 and an area of 10.9 km².[1]
The municipality of Cislago contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Massina, Santa Maria, and Cascina Visconta.
