Filling an Indian pot with water from the cart

Some cool image source images:

Filling an Indian pot with water from the cart
Image by National Library of Scotland
Indian Army cavalrymen at water cart, France, during World War I. This image shows cavalrymen from the Indian Army getting water from a water cart. The men are wearing dark coloured turbans, most have short jackets but one man, possibly an officer, has a longer, almost knee-length coat.

The pot being used for the water is described in the caption as being Indian. It looks like one of their traditional copper jars.

Main Street Morning - Fire Engine No. 71

Sorry guys I’ve been too busy here lately to keep up on Flickr. I owe you all a good visit.

This picture presented a challenge both in camera and post. We got into the park early for our 8:15 reservation for Crystal Palace, so I was doing a little – empty park shooting – on Main Street USA. This Main Street fire truck came by very quickly. I quickly took one shot but as I was set at -0.7 EV it was WAY underexposed due to the camera metering the sun. So I dialed it up to +1 EV real quick (moving vehicle, gotta hurry!) and fired off a couple more. Well, +1 was still not even close. So that was the challenge in camera. Then, this is one of the photos that I lost the RAW file so all I had to work with was the .jpeg. So normally, if it weren’t for the fire truck, I would have dismissed this photo. But I decided to play around with it a little because I liked the composition enough. To be quite honest, I’m surprised I was able to pull out this much data from a .jpeg! Of course, zoom in and you start to see some weird artifacts, but for the most part a lot of the data was still there. I REALLY would have liked to have the RAW data for this picture. Seriously. But this will have to do. : (

As for the edit – I did all the editing in Capture NX2, strategically utilizing some NIK filters (thanks for the tips Don Sullivan and Cory Disbrow). I quite like how the edit turned out. Something very different looking for my photos… don’t you think?

**PLEASE VIEW LARGE (but not too large ; p )**

For reference, I’m showing the original .jpeg exposure in the comments below.

WIT: Ok I didn't really smash my iMac. I just held the hammer up to the screen, and then later in Photoshop added a little motion blur to the head of the hammer.

Image was taken in front of a black background, with a speedlight high and to the left of the computer, pointing back down at it through a white umbrella (speedight was set to half-power).

Added text, curves and motion blur in Photoshop.

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

Hillary Rodham Clinton
search by image
More Bogdan Migulski Photography.

In 1965, Rodham enrolled at Wellesley College, where she majored in political science.[16] During her freshman year, she served as president of the Wellesley Young Republicans;[17][18] with this Rockefeller Republican-oriented group,[19] she supported the elections of John Lindsay and Edward Brooke.[20] She later stepped down from this position, as her views changed regarding the American Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.[17] In a letter to her youth minister at this time, she described herself as "a mind conservative and a heart liberal."[21] In contrast to the 1960s current that advocated radical actions against the political system, she sought to work for change within it.[22] In her junior year, Rodham became a supporter of the antiwar presidential nomination campaign of Democrat Eugene McCarthy.[23] Following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Rodham organized a two-day student strike and worked with Wellesley's black students to recruit more black students and faculty.[23] In early 1968, she was elected president of the Wellesley College Government Association and served through early 1969;[22][24] she was instrumental in keeping Wellesley from being embroiled in the student disruptions common to other colleges.[22] A number of her fellow students thought she might some day become the first woman President of the United States.[22] So she could better understand her changing political views, Professor Alan Schechter assigned Rodham to intern at the House Republican Conference, and she attended the "Wellesley in Washington" summer program.[23] Rodham was invited by moderate New York Republican Representative Charles Goodell to help Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s late-entry campaign for the Republican nomination.[23] Rodham attended the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami. However, she was upset by how Richard Nixon's campaign portrayed Rockefeller and by what she perceived as the convention's "veiled" racist messages, and left the Republican Party for good.[23]

Returning to Wellesley for her final year, Rodham wrote her senior thesis about the tactics of radical community organizer Saul Alinsky under Professor Schechter (years later while she was First Lady, access to the thesis was restricted at the request of the White House and it became the subject of some speculation).[25] In 1969, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts,[26] with departmental honors in political science.[25] Following pressure from some fellow students,[27] she became the first student in Wellesley College history to deliver its commencement address.[24] Her speech received a standing ovation lasting seven minutes.[22][28][29] She was featured in an article published in Life magazine,[30] due to the response to a part of her speech that criticized Senator Edward Brooke, who had spoken before her at the commencement.[27] She also appeared on Irv Kupcinet's nationally syndicated television talk show as well as in Illinois and New England newspapers.[31] That summer, she worked her way across Alaska, washing dishes in Mount McKinley National Park and sliming salmon in a fish processing cannery in Valdez (which fired her and shut down overnight when she complained about unhealthy conditions).[32]

The Whitewater controversy was the focus of media attention from the publication of a New York Times report during the 1992 presidential campaign,[160] and throughout her time as First Lady. The Clintons had lost their late-1970s investment in the Whitewater Development Corporation;[161] at the same time, their partners in that investment, Jim and Susan McDougal, operated Madison Guaranty, a savings and loan institution that retained the legal services of Rose Law Firm[161] and may have been improperly subsidizing Whitewater losses.[160] Madison Guaranty later failed, and Clinton's work at Rose was scrutinized for a possible conflict of interest in representing the bank before state regulators that her husband had appointed;[160] she claimed she had done minimal work for the bank.[162] Independent counsels Robert Fiske and Kenneth Starr subpoenaed Clinton's legal billing records; she said she did not know where they were.[163][164] The records were found in the First Lady's White House book room after a two-year search, and delivered to investigators in early 1996.[164] The delayed appearance of the records sparked intense interest and another investigation about how they surfaced and where they had been;[164] Clinton's staff attributed the problem to continual changes in White House storage areas since the move from the Arkansas Governor's Mansion.[165] After the discovery of the records, on January 26, 1996, Clinton made history by becoming the first First Lady to be subpoenaed to testify before a Federal grand jury.[163] After several Independent Counsels had investigated, a final report was issued in 2000 that stated there was insufficient evidence that either Clinton had engaged in criminal wrongdoing.[166]

Other investigations took place during Hillary Clinton's time as First Lady. Scrutiny of the May 1993 firings of the White House Travel Office employees, an affair that became known as "Travelgate", began with charges that the White House had used audited financial irregularities in the Travel Office operation as an excuse to replace the staff with friends from Arkansas.[167] The 1996 discovery of a two-year-old White House memo caused the investigation to focus more on whether Hillary Clinton had orchestrated the firings and whether the statements she made to investigators about her role in the firings were true.[168][169] The 2000 final Independent Counsel report concluded she was involved in the firings and that she had made "factually false" statements, but that there was insufficient evidence that she knew the statements were false, or knew that her actions would lead to firings, to prosecute her.[170] Following deputy White House counsel Vince Foster's July 1993 suicide, allegations were made that Hillary Clinton had ordered the removal of potentially damaging files (related to Whitewater or other matters) from Foster's office on the night of his death.[171] Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr investigated this, and by 1999, Starr was reported to be holding the investigation open, despite his staff having told him there was no case to be made.[172] When Starr's successor Robert Ray issued his final Whitewater reports in 2000, no claims were made against Hillary Clinton regarding this.[166] In March 1994 newspaper reports revealed her spectacular profits from cattle futures trading in 1978–1979;[173] allegations were made in the press of conflict of interest and disguised bribery,[174] and several individuals analyzed her trading records, but no formal investigation was made and she was never charged with any wrongdoing.[174] An outgrowth of the Travelgate investigation was the June 1996 discovery of improper White House access to hundreds of FBI background reports on former Republican White House employees, an affair that some called "Filegate".[175] Accusations were made that Hillary Clinton had requested these files and that she had recommended hiring an unqualified individual to head the White House Security Office.[176] Source: Wikipedia.

I had spent the entire previous day at Hearst Castle in California -- all the way until the sun went down. That messed up my plans a bit to drive up Highway 1 and take in the sites with my camera. So I drove just about an hour or so north and found a little lodge right on the rocky coast. It was one of those mysterious late-night checkins where you can't see what's around you, but you have a feeling it's kinda awesome. The next morning, I woke up early to see this! I hopped over a fence and hiked along the top of the cliffs to see the various views... Just as the sun was coming up, I grabbed this one from under a tree.

A Slice of Life in Malaysia (and thanks for the Facebook Fan club members breaking 1,000 strong!)

I spent a few weekends in the Chinese area of Melaka, which is on the southern coast. After it gets dark outside and you walk down the streets, you can always see little glowing lights coming from inside homes that are crammed together in the streets. There is a general clatter of Chinese voices with the clanking and scraping of dinner being made and shared. One of them had the door slightly ajar with a good mood coming out (picked up by my Jacobson's Organ), so I craned my neck around inside with a smile to see what was happening. I had my camera in plain sight, and it's always novel for them to see a whitey in this area of town. I gave an international greeting of "howdy", and then the international sign of "can I take a photo of your interesting living area", and then I snapped a single RAW for conversion to HDR later.

There are all kinds of interesting things inside if you look close... like a massive amount of eggs for a small home and also the ever-present Milo, which all Malaysians love and have in ready supply.

I checked the Facebook fan club today, which I should do more, and saw that it had broken 1,000 fans! Thanks everyone - that is cool. I am not sure the best thing to do on there yet; I'd like to occasionally do fun things there, like I do on Twitter, for people that like to see real-time updates or behind-the-scenes activity. If you have any ideas, feel free to start up a discussion thread there on the fan site and I'll be sure to check in to see what I can do to help out!

It was suggested (by Rouvaishyana?) that the two images might be hung together in the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History for visitor interest. I have included a couple of candidate photos, as the current dredging setup barely shows in the image taken from the same point as the machinery is located further out at the Rock and is tiny in the image. www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/2303222094 is one location I recommend for the "2009" version. This one taken 3/1/09 does not have the dredging equipment visible of course but really shows the new harbor. I here posted other present-day image candidates at the set at www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/sets/72157622715084937/ (I have also included some iPhone shots of the 1942 image just for perspective - they are NOT of reproduction quality). You can download the full-resolution versions of the photos in this set (you may need to login, and select "all sizes") and print it, or click "order prints" and it can be fulfilled online. I turned my printer off over two year ago and now outsource all my limited printing needs to mpix.com or the like. I wanted to suggest that to really demonstrate the changes over time, that the new image(s) not be a print, but simply a photo, or better, a video, displayed in one of those inexpensive LCD digital picture frames that PJ used to promote my Click-Click product in 2008. Anyway, I can't resist pushing people's technical buttons. I have repeatedly suggested that museum displays that are visual only and not consist of palpable or 3-dimensional objects, be rendered via HD programmable LCD displays (a suggestion for the museum improvements committee?). Imagine, exhibits that never fade and can be incrementally improved at no cost! You might also ask "Morro Rock, Morro Bay, CA. What did it Look Like between the Mainland and the Rock from the Late 1800's until Today?" My morro-bay.com/historical/ link to morro-bay.com/morro-rock/ - this page is full of maps and photos showing answers to questions of before and after. Check it out. Best!
