FAST LIGHT • May 7 + 8, 2011, 7 pm - 10 pm

Contemporary pioneers in art, science, and technology have come together at MIT to create one of the most exhilarating and inventive spectacles metro Boston has ever seen. On May 7 and 8, 2011, visitors can interact with 20+ art and architectural installations illuminating the campus and the Charles River along Memorial Drive at MIT.

New Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G Macro lens @ 1:1 Magnification (17)

Wow, what an awesome little Macro lens. Nikon's new 40mm f/2.8 Macro lens is a STELLAR piece of glass. It's 35mm equivalent focal length is 60mm on DX(which is a really useful focal length). This lens is capable of 1:1 magnification @ a close focus distance of about 6 inches. Nikon has a long history of making very SHARP Macro lenses and this little beast is no departure. I compared it to the venerable AF-S Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G VR lens and at 1:1, i couldn't tell the difference. Sharpness when stopped down is criminal and contrast is amazing. Just have a look at the sample images!

Please feel free to view these images at full-resolution. This lens can't be fully appreciated unless you view at 100%.

Sticking to tradition, we were one of the first people to get a copy of the new Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G Macro lens. The same thing happened with the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Prime a few months back. We were very lucky to be able to be one of the first to get copies of these new lenses.

Wooden Touchscreen Terminal - front
picture frames
This is a 15" LCD touchscreen with a Celeron 633MHz board with 128MB RAM in a wooden case of my construction. The case also contains the PSU. The bottom part of the screen surround hinges down to allow access to the monitor controls. The button mounted on the base is the power button and indicator light.

It has no hard drive and boots using PXE from my server, then mounts its filesystem over NFS. It runs Debian Linux, xorg, XFCE4, Metacity and Firefox. The button on the left of the panel at the bottom of the screen pops up a screen keyboard.

Currently I'm a bit concerned about the amount of heat that builds up from the PSU (reaches 75°C after a while), an external PSU might be required. Also it tends to run out of RAM when viewing stuff on google video (no swap, no hard drive).

Update: I've done some work on the insides, see here. It still looks the same on the outside.

Further update: I've switched from the above described software to running KDE. More details here.

Some of you may remember one of the panoramas that I took in Chicago in 2009. I had it printed on canvas (at a size of 27"x65") and hung it on our living room wall a couple of weeks ago.

People keep telling me I should sell copies of it but printing it at that size is pretty expensive so I'm not sure I want to take the upfront risk. Have any of you sold any prints of your photos? Do you have any advice?

.....Saturday July 16, 2011...

news.yahoo.com/security-experts-casey-anthony-needs-safe-...

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Online and elsewhere, Casey Anthony has been vilified, and security experts say if her lawyers are smart, they'll arrange for her to be in a house protected by bodyguards for maybe weeks in case one of those who have threatened tries to make good on a death threat.

A jury acquitted Anthony last week of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, but found her guilty of lying to law officers investigating the girl's disappearance in 2008. Many believe she got away with murder and some have wished the same fate on her that prosecutors say befell her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

When Anthony is released from jail Sunday, it will probably be in the middle of the night, and her lawyers should arrange for several SUVs with tinted windows to pull up to the Orange County Jail, the experts say. Then they should whisk her away to a safe house.

"I'd tell her to go to a big house in the middle of nowhere," said Dallas-based security expert Stuart Diamond, who has worked for celebrities and federal agencies. "That would be the safest thing for her. It's more of an effort for someone to really follow through on a threat."

Anthony's legal team said Friday it received an emailed death threat with a doctored photo of the 25-year-old woman with a bullet hole through her forehead. The threat was forwarded to authorities.

One her attorneys, Cheney Mason, said Anthony is nervous about getting out of jail, and he isn't taking any chances: "We are all vigilant and I am armed."

She was sentenced to four years in prison, but with good behavior and nearly three years already served, she will be out this weekend.

Anthony still faces a civil lawsuit. Attorneys for a woman who claimed Anthony defamed her had tried get her deposed before her release from jail but a judge ruled Friday that the deposition would take place in October. Also on Friday, Anthony filed notice that she will appeal the four misdemeanor counts of lying to law enforcement.

Details of her release are being closely held, and the sheriff's department is not making the time public beforehand.

"This will not be a usual release," jail spokesman Allen Moore said in an email. "Due to the high-profile nature of this case and intense, emotional interest by the public, appropriate measures will be taken to release the individual into the community in such a manner so as to preserve the safety of the individual and public."

The Orange County Jail has had very few high-profile inmates. Former astronaut Lisa Nowak, who was convicted in a bizarre attack on a romantic rival, walked out the jail's front door, where a horde of media pushed and elbowed their way toward her, shouting questions and trying to snap photos. In another case, Noelle Bush, the daughter of then-Gov. Jeb Bush and niece of then-President George W. Bush, received special handling after her arrest on drug charges. Secret Service agents were worried she could be targeted.

Once she is out of jail, Anthony will not get special treatment beyond the protection any person would get if there were a credible threat, law enforcement authorities said. (Earlier this week, authorities said they had not received any credible threats, but they did not immediately return a call Friday about the new email.)

"She's like every other resident or citizen here," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said. "We're not going to be her personal security. Her attorneys will make appropriate decisions or prepare for her own security after that."

She should be let out of jail at "an offbeat time like 3 or 4 in the morning," said Daniel Meachum, an Atlanta lawyer who has represented football star Michael Vick and actor Wesley Snipes.

Ideally, security experts said, she should go to a safe house. She may have to arrange backup locations, in case the address is discovered.

She probably won't be going to the home she had shared with her parents before her arrest, in part because the trial fractured their relationship. Defense attorney Jose Baez told jurors that Anthony's father, George Anthony, molested his daughter and covered up his granddaughter's death after Caylee accidentally drowned in the family pool. George Anthony has denied the abuse and cover-up allegations.
"Most of the time you can always go home, but she doesn't have that option," Meachum said. "Baez has to have somewhere for her to go for her to get herself together."

Anthony's security may be hampered by her limited financial means, though many have predicted lucrative book and TV interview deals. Two security guards around the clock could cost ,000 a week, experts said.

The best thing she can do for her safety is keep a low profile, said Mark Geragos, a Los Angeles lawyer who has represented Winona Ryder, Michael Jackson and Nicole Ritchie.

"She needs to lay as low as possible until the next big scandal or trial," Geragos said. "It's not time to do a photo spread. It's not time to sit down with Diane Sawyer. None of those things. There is no reason to do any of that."

Changing women's lives
change background image
Image by DFID - UK Department for International Development
Mwanasha, along with nearly 200 women, gather under the shade of a Balboab tree. They’ve come for contraceptives, which for many of them can save their lives and transform their families' futures. In Malawi, one in 36 women die in childbirth compared to one in 4,600 in the UK.

Background

On 11 July 2012 the UK Government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will host a groundbreaking summit to cut in half the current number of women and girls in the world’s poorest countries without access to contraception, but who wish to avoid pregnancy or space their children.

Every woman and girl deserves the opportunity to to determine her own future. Contraceptives give the world's poorest women the power to decide if and when to have another child.

Westland Row? Absolutely not!
photo to poster
Image by National Library of Ireland on The Commons
Hadn't meant this image from our Eason Collection as any kind of mystery photo - just liked it for the shops and thought we might get a date from the posters. It was allegedly Westland Row in Dublin, but there is no church spire that looks like that visible from Westland Row. Was wondering if it mightn't be up more towards Harcourt Street, and that turned out to be the case -see comments below...

Date: Circa 1912? (but almost certainly 1912-22)

Photo Assignment: "Light" - Ride The Light
photo to poster
Lasers + eyes = BAD! That said, I decided to fire off my high-powered green laser in the dark and see what happened!=) Of course this didn't turn out exactly how I pictured it in my head. I wanted this green beam, focused perfectly in space disappearing in a thick bokeh. But lacking the skill to pull it off, I got this instead.=)

I taped the laser on top of the lens and pre-focused on a spare tripod a few feet in front of the camera. I aimed the laser so that it hit the poster frame at the end of the hall and bounced back past the camera. To get the beam to show up I misted the hair with water from a spray bottle. I was actually able to walk from the camera to the back of the hall misting both beams. As long as I stayed out of the beam and didn't linger, you can't really tell I'm there.

Like most of these shots, I have ideas for improving the technique, but it looks cool anyway. Plus, neither my camera's CCD or my retinas got burned in the process. Score!

This is part of the second set of photo assignments I'm doing with my friend Abstract Duck. This month it was my turn to pick the topic, so I went with "Light." Pretty easy since pretty much any photo has light in it... but it was more challenging than I expected.

The family of John and Celena March of Stouffville Ontario pose for a photograph. The Marches were United Empire Loyalists, descended from Peter Martz who lived in upstate New York. There are still Marches in the Stouffville/Markham area.

Back row: Eva Steckley, Will March, Georgina March, Percy March, Elsie March and David March.

Seated: Minnie (March) Curtis, John March, Celena (Clift) March and David Curtis.

Kids: Frank and Erla Curtis.

My great-grandmother is Minnie (seated left) and David Curtis (seated right). The kids are my great uncle and great aunt. Minnie and David moved to Saskatchewan, tried farming, ran a dry goods store in Wolseley, and ended up in Regina after David was injured at the grain elevator he worked at.

My grandmother Elsie (not born in this photo) grew up in Wolseley and Regina. If you're a relative and want a high-resolution copy of this image, leave a comment or e-mail me at "eggertson AT gmail DOT com" (no spaces, use the symbol instead of the capitalized word).

Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian's first photographer and curator of photography, beginning his career at the institution in the 1870s. In 1913 he mounted an exhibition on the history of photography in the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Building, showcasing many of the remarkable advancements made in the field that he feared had already been forgotten or disregarded.

Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie's duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum's installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie's documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution's art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

Medium: Cyanotype

Culture: American

Date: 1913

Collection: Thomas Smillie Collection (Record Unit 95) - Thomas Smillie served as the first official photographer for the Smithsonian Institution from 1870 until his death in 1917. As head of the photography lab as well as its curator, he was responsible for photographing all of the exhibits, objects, and expeditions, leaving an informal record of early Smithsonian collections.

Listen, Toccata & Fugue in d minor (BACH, J.S.)

Eric's Star Twist V.2.1 - (fairly easy) Precrease
photo sizes
sorry for the big picture.. click 'all sizes' button please.

i can't wait any more to thank my 'first' teacher of paper tessellation in flickr, origomi, Eric Gjerde.
well.. since i couldn't post photos for a while so i've prepared this.
i had something else about this model but i'm not sure if i will post that something.
i will tell what the something is if i post it (wish me luck).

anyway, this and the original model gives me great inspiration on paper folding...
in fact i've fold the both quite alot for the kids of my friends'.
what can i say, they just love them. and i got the credit for it (sorry Eric).
one of my friend laminated this nicely.
umm... not quite like Eric's vacuum-packed star twist.. ^L^"

before making this precrease and steps for star twist, i looked over Eric's homepage to see if there's any change on this model... (hoping there's a new hint on folding this)
and i found New Star Twist Diagrams which is nice but not so easy to remember... at least to me. so i decide to make a 'fairly easy' folding steps for the beginners like me.

this is also my 'first' attempt to make an SCP(Sequenced Crease Pattern),
so it needs to be examined by experts such as.. Philip? and other gurus?
please tell me what you guys think.. i don't want to be alone (like Joel had been ^L^")

i found some mistakes after uploading them... see the notes on diagram.
and if you have any questions or sugestions, please let me know.
(i'm sure some of you couldn't understand my 'Kongrish(Korean-English)'. ^L^")

again, i thank Eric and of course other friends in flickr ^L^"

[last thing to say... i open these for friends only right now.. i will open them to public if Eric or you guys think that i'm not breaking any kind of copyright thing such as my copy of Philip's (CC) mark ^L^"]

... [Edited: i open this to public with Eric's permission. well i might wait till Philip says something about his CC mark that i copied but i guess he's a lil busy ^L^".
by the way, i'm gonna send PDF of this to Eric about a week later (i gotta correct some mistakes and add more explanation on them)
so that he can post it on his homepage.
i might post it on my homepage (or weblog page) when i have one available...
probably a Korean Version... ^L^"
