For some reason there seems to be a lot of red in the photos I set up around the house. Not wanting to break the trend here's an abstract shot of a painting hanging on my lounge wall

***************************

This is the continuation of a photo-project that I began in the summer of 2008: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

As I indicated when I started this project in 2008, I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.

I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

Thus far, I've generally avoided photographing bums, drunks, crazies, and homeless people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

Old Red Sandstone cliffs, Whiting Ness, Arbroath, Scotland

Uploaded as a clue to another GWUK photo

These cliffs are of 'Old Red Sandstone'. There are two units in the cliff - the upper, coarse, pebbly sandstone is of Upper Devonian age, and rests unconformably on finer-grained sandstone of Lower Devonian age. The Middle Devonian is missing and is represented by the irregular junction (an angular unconformity) between the two units. The Lower Devonian sandstone was deposited first, then uplifted, tilted and eroded during the Middle Devonian, before the upper unit was deposited in the Upper Devonian times.

Scanned from Kodachrome 64 transparency film, taken with a Zenit 'E'.

Epic Change with Epic Thanks is an example of social media being used to raise over 0,000 to build a locally led primary school in Arusha, Tanzania. Shepherds Junior is a small pre- and primary school has grown to over 500 students and leads Tanzania in test scores.

EpicChange.org brought Mama Lucy and two students from Tanzania to share their story on Tuesday, 15 November. The circle was hosted by Pastor - Jeanette Sherrill at Trinity United Church of Christ - Saint Petersburg, FL. Cate Colgan, @CateTV, invited me to attend the meet and greet. I was blown away by all the stories! While there, I also met twitter friend Lee Sollivan, @purrfectlee, for the first time and her husband, Gil Gonzalez, @danaCreative. Cate shot video and shares her excitement on Youtube.

Lucy "Mama Lucy" Kampton used income from her poultry business to rent land for the school. Then she met Stacy and Sanjay who fell in love with the people and school. They started an online donation program, whose contributions allowed Mama Lucy to buy the land and build the school.

What started as a dream became reality and grew from six students to over 500. They now lead Tanzania in test scores. The students use social media and are known as TwitterKids of Tanzania who tweet & write tumblr blogs!

Chromazones, try 1b
change background image
A first attempt at building a Chromazones swatches table - I don't call this a success, but it points out a few interesting things ("Chromazones"!? Well, here's an explanation, straight from the source - watch the video excerpt).

The Lee gels used are listed below. For each colour, I've measured the base exposure in reflective mode, then bracketed the aperture all the way, then adjusted the flash power, took another base measurement then bracketed the aperture the other way. Lots of exposures:

First row, no gel
716 Mikkel Blue
128 Bright Pink
089 Moss Green
104 Deep Amber
025 Sunset Red
201 Full CTB
244 Full Plus Green
204 Full CTO

#1: My exposures were not accurate enough, even if I used a flash meter. One problem is the meter has a 0.1 stops precision while the camera can be adjusted only in 1/3 stops increments, so I had to randomly round some values. Even at a glance, swatches on a column don't seem to have the same luminosity, even if they're supposed to. Or maybe my camera's response curve was automatically adjusted at some point (RAW developer?), I'll have to try and control it better.

Another problem is that shooting handheld and not having a very uniform coverage of the target means that the averaged values can be randomly skewed by the wrinkles on the cloth and the light's falloff. For a better test, the camera and target should both be fixed, and the illumination soft and from the camera's axis.

#2: It was a surprise how small the difference between full stops can be (but see #1).

#3: It was not such a surprise how saturated the colours can get at their specific exposure (way out of CMYK gamut, for instance) on a simple white nylon screen. Collins was right, they can get scary. The colours can then get much less saturated only a couple of stops away.

#4: There are not just one colour gradients, the hues change as the exposure varies, and that becomes obvious when the channels start to get clipped (below -3Ev and above +2Ev). I think that's OK, the purpose of this table is to provide a realistic representation of the effects of changing the exposure, not just a colour gradient. On the other hand, I'm not sure if clipped exposures belong in this table.

#5: Because of #3 and #4, the results of altering the exposure are not intuitive, so building and referring to such a table is definitely worthwhile.

#6: After uploading to Flickr, I can't see the first column anymore, colours got darker and have lost some of their saturation.

"From FDR to Obama: Presidents on Time" February 12 through September 26, 2010, at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery (NPG), Washington, DC.

"Regardless of how newsworthy a person may be, there is no magic formula for getting one’s picture on the cover of Time magazine, with one exception: the president of the United States."

"Founded in 1923, Time has put on its cover all incumbent presidents from Warren Harding to Barack Obama, with the exception of Herbert Hoover. Beginning with Franklin Roosevelt, this exhibition will explore the modern presidency through the covers of America’s oldest and most recognized weekly news magazine."

"The show includes approximately 30 works of presidential cover art, representing a wide variety of mediums, from traditional oil paintings to a pop-art sculpture bust of Richard Nixon made from strips of newspaper headlines. James Barber, historian, is the exhibition curator."

One of my many passions while shooting is catching what goes on behind the scenes. I love the comradely and goofiness of everyone involved. Especially catching the natural humor of the models. They work so hard putting on a straight face. As soon as the camera is off that’s when the real fun begins.
And of course when everyone involved are friends, well then, craziness Reigns supreme!

Mostly Harmless iPhone Background

Douglas Adams said it best! Mostly Harmless!

This iPhone Background (640x960 wallpaper) is released under a Creative Commons Attribution License.
If you like this image, please leave a comment. Thanks!

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

This photo is my 2000th flickr upload. I must admit a certain addiction to flickr. I know I'm not alone.

I've been using flickr since August 9, 2004, just short of four years. Man, does time go by quickly.

The notoriety from my Lensbaby and TtV work has been a great way to make more contacts – and it's just so rewarding to see you get excited about new discoveries in Photography. If it weren't for your willingness to share information, flickr wouldn't have the attraction it does for me – so, in turn, I try to help anyone who has questions.

For me, Photography is all about experimentation and play.

I enjoy looking at your photographs and I look at as many as I possibly can each day. I read through comments others have left on your work and try to add my own. I like to find photographs in your stream that don't get a lot of attention, but are just as good. I look through your favorites all the time. You have great taste.

Thank you for your visits, comments and also for the inspiration you bring me on a daily basis.

While shopping at a yardsale yesterday, I found this one and couldn't pass it up. It's nothing extremely valuable - as it will sell in excellent condition for around . However, I only paid about for it, and hey, it's just a cool looking thing!

Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center: Space Shuttle Enterprise
photo services
See more photos of this, and the Wikipedia article.

Details, quoting from Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Space Shuttle Enterprise:

Manufacturer:
Rockwell International Corporation

Country of Origin:
United States of America

Dimensions:
Overall: 57 ft. tall x 122 ft. long x 78 ft. wing span, 150,000 lb.
(1737.36 x 3718.57 x 2377.44cm, 68039.6kg)

Materials:
Aluminum airframe and body with some fiberglass features; payload bay doors are graphite epoxy composite; thermal tiles are simulated (polyurethane foam) except for test samples of actual tiles and thermal blankets.

The first Space Shuttle orbiter, "Enterprise," is a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and tests on the ground; it is not equipped for spaceflight. Although the airframe and flight control elements are like those of the Shuttles flown in space, this vehicle has no propulsion system and only simulated thermal tiles because these features were not needed for atmospheric and ground tests. "Enterprise" was rolled out at Rockwell International's assembly facility in Palmdale, California, in 1976. In 1977, it entered service for a nine-month-long approach-and-landing test flight program. Thereafter it was used for vibration tests and fit checks at NASA centers, and it also appeared in the 1983 Paris Air Show and the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans. In 1985, NASA transferred "Enterprise" to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum.

Quoting from Wikipedia | Space Shuttle Enterprise:

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle orbiter. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform test flights in the atmosphere. It was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield, and was therefore not capable of spaceflight.

Originally, Enterprise had been intended to be refitted for orbital flight, which would have made it the second space shuttle to fly after Columbia. However, during the construction of Columbia, details of the final design changed, particularly with regard to the weight of the fuselage and wings. Refitting Enterprise for spaceflight would have involved dismantling the orbiter and returning the sections to subcontractors across the country. As this was an expensive proposition, it was determined to be less costly to build Challenger around a body frame (STA-099) that had been created as a test article. Similarly, Enterprise was considered for refit to replace Challenger after the latter was destroyed, but Endeavour was built from structural spares instead.

Service

Construction began on the first orbiter on June 4, 1974. Designated OV-101, it was originally planned to be named Constitution and unveiled on Constitution Day, September 17, 1976. A write-in campaign by Trekkies to President Gerald Ford asked that the orbiter be named after the Starship Enterprise, featured on the television show Star Trek. Although Ford did not mention the campaign, the president—who during World War II had served on the aircraft carrier USS Monterey (CVL-26) that served with USS Enterprise (CV-6)—said that he was "partial to the name" and overrode NASA officials.

The design of OV-101 was not the same as that planned for OV-102, the first flight model; the tail was constructed differently, and it did not have the interfaces to mount OMS pods. A large number of subsystems—ranging from main engines to radar equipment—were not installed on this vehicle, but the capacity to add them in the future was retained. Instead of a thermal protection system, its surface was primarily fiberglass.

In mid-1976, the orbiter was used for ground vibration tests, allowing engineers to compare data from an actual flight vehicle with theoretical models.

On September 17, 1976, Enterprise was rolled out of Rockwell's plant at Palmdale, California. In recognition of its fictional namesake, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and most of the principal cast of the original series of Star Trek were on hand at the dedication ceremony.

Approach and landing tests (ALT)

Main article: Approach and Landing Tests

On January 31, 1977, it was taken by road to Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, to begin operational testing.

While at NASA Dryden, Enterprise was used by NASA for a variety of ground and flight tests intended to validate aspects of the shuttle program. The initial nine-month testing period was referred to by the acronym ALT, for "Approach and Landing Test". These tests included a maiden "flight" on February 18, 1977 atop a Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) to measure structural loads and ground handling and braking characteristics of the mated system. Ground tests of all orbiter subsystems were carried out to verify functionality prior to atmospheric flight.

The mated Enterprise/SCA combination was then subjected to five test flights with Enterprise unmanned and unactivated. The purpose of these test flights was to measure the flight characteristics of the mated combination. These tests were followed with three test flights with Enterprise manned to test the shuttle flight control systems.

Enterprise underwent five free flights where the craft separated from the SCA and was landed under astronaut control. These tests verified the flight characteristics of the orbiter design and were carried out under several aerodynamic and weight configurations. On the fifth and final glider flight, pilot-induced oscillation problems were revealed, which had to be addressed before the first orbital launch occurred.

On August 12, 1977, the space shuttle Enterprise flew on its own for the first time.

Preparation for STS-1

Following the ALT program, Enterprise was ferried among several NASA facilities to configure the craft for vibration testing. In June 1979, it was mated with an external tank and solid rocket boosters (known as a boilerplate configuration) and tested in a launch configuration at Kennedy Space Center Launch Pad 39A.

Retirement

With the completion of critical testing, Enterprise was partially disassembled to allow certain components to be reused in other shuttles, then underwent an international tour visiting France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the U.S. states of California, Alabama, and Louisiana (during the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition). It was also used to fit-check the never-used shuttle launch pad at Vandenberg AFB, California. Finally, on November 18, 1985, Enterprise was ferried to Washington, D.C., where it became property of the Smithsonian Institution.

Post-Challenger

After the Challenger disaster, NASA considered using Enterprise as a replacement. However refitting the shuttle with all of the necessary equipment needed for it to be used in space was considered, but instead it was decided to use spares constructed at the same time as Discovery and Atlantis to build Endeavour.

Post-Columbia

In 2003, after the breakup of Columbia during re-entry, the Columbia Accident Investigation Board conducted tests at Southwest Research Institute, which used an air gun to shoot foam blocks of similar size, mass and speed to that which struck Columbia at a test structure which mechanically replicated the orbiter wing leading edge. They removed a fiberglass panel from Enterprise's wing to perform analysis of the material and attached it to the test structure, then shot a foam block at it. While the panel was not broken as a result of the test, the impact was enough to permanently deform a seal. As the reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) panel on Columbia was 2.5 times weaker, this suggested that the RCC leading edge would have been shattered. Additional tests on the fiberglass were canceled in order not to risk damaging the test apparatus, and a panel from Discovery was tested to determine the effects of the foam on a similarly-aged RCC leading edge. On July 7, 2003, a foam impact test created a hole 41 cm by 42.5 cm (16.1 inches by 16.7 inches) in the protective RCC panel. The tests clearly demonstrated that a foam impact of the type Columbia sustained could seriously breach the protective RCC panels on the wing leading edge.

The board determined that the probable cause of the accident was that the foam impact caused a breach of a reinforced carbon-carbon panel along the leading edge of Columbia's left wing, allowing hot gases generated during re-entry to enter the wing and cause structural collapse. This caused Columbia to spin out of control, breaking up with the loss of the entire crew.

Museum exhibit

Enterprise was stored at the Smithsonian's hangar at Washington Dulles International Airport before it was restored and moved to the newly built Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport, where it has been the centerpiece of the space collection. On April 12, 2011, NASA announced that Space Shuttle Discovery, the most traveled orbiter in the fleet, will be added to the collection once the Shuttle fleet is retired. When that happens, Enterprise will be moved to the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City, to a newly constructed hangar adjacent to the museum. In preparation for the anticipated relocation, engineers evaluated the vehicle in early 2010 and determined that it was safe to fly on the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft once again.

Details, quoting from Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird:

No reconnaissance aircraft in history has operated globally in more hostile airspace or with such complete impunity than the SR-71, the world's fastest jet-propelled aircraft. The Blackbird's performance and operational achievements placed it at the pinnacle of aviation technology developments during the Cold War.

This Blackbird accrued about 2,800 hours of flight time during 24 years of active service with the U.S. Air Force. On its last flight, March 6, 1990, Lt. Col. Ed Yielding and Lt. Col. Joseph Vida set a speed record by flying from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds, averaging 3,418 kilometers (2,124 miles) per hour. At the flight's conclusion, they landed at Washington-Dulles International Airport and turned the airplane over to the Smithsonian.

"Live Forever" is a song by British rock group Oasis. Written by guitarist Noel Gallagher, the song was released as the third single from their debut album Definitely Maybe on 8 August 1994, just prior to that album's release.

Gallagher wrote the song in 1991, before he joined Oasis. Inspired by The Rolling Stones' "Shine a Light," "Live Forever" features a basic song structure and lyrics with an optimistic outlook that contrasted with the attitude of the grunge bands popular at the time. The song was the first Oasis single to enter the top ten in the United Kingdom, and garnered critical acclaim.

Background and recording

Noel Gallagher wrote "Live Forever" in 1991, while working for a building company in his hometown of Manchester. After his foot was crushed by a pipe in an accident, he was given a less-strenuous job working in the storeroom, allowing him more time to write songs. One night he was listening to The Rolling Stones' album Exile on Main St. While playing one of his own chord progressions, Gallagher noted that it sounded good against one of the vocal melodies from the album: "It was the bit from 'Shine a Light' that goes [sings], 'May the good lord shine a light on you,'" Gallagher recalled. Gallagher incorporated the melody, changing the line to "Maybe I don’t really want to know". For a period afterwards, that was the only part of the song Gallagher had completed.

The song was later instrumental in helping the band secure their record deal with Creation Records. Reflecting on when he first heard the song, Creation boss Alan McGee recalled "It was probably the single greatest moment I've ever experienced with them."

The demo version of "Live Forever" begins with an acoustic guitar intro. While recording the album version, the record's producer Owen Morris cut out this intro and replaced it with a drumbeat played by Tony McCarroll. Morris further cut a second section in Noel's guitar solo. Although Gallagher was upset, Morris felt the part had sounded "a bit like fucking Slash from Guns N' Roses".

Reception

"Live Forever" was released on 8 August 1994 as the band's third single, a month before the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe. The song had been part of the band's set for longer than a year at that point, and had amassed so many mentions in reviews of the group that "its release [as a single] had long seemed inevitable." In its review of the single, NME found "Live Forever" to be an improvement over Oasis' previous singles, concluding, "Basically, what thus far looked like obnoxious Manc arrogance suddenly looks like sheer effortlessness. A terrific record."

While Oasis' first two singles, "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker", were modestly received, it was "Live Forever" that "got the world's attention." "Live Forever" became Oasis' first top ten hit, reaching number ten on the British singles charts in 1994. In 1995, the song became the band's first chart success in the United States, reaching number two and ten on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, respectively.[8] Noel Gallagher commented on the praise given to the song: "People said to me after 'Live Forever', 'Where are you gonna go after that?' And I was like, I don't think it's that good. I think it's a fucking good song, but I think I can do better."

"Live Forever" has garnered additional acclaim years after its release. In 2006, "Live Forever" was named the greatest song of all time in a poll released by Q; the song had ranked ninth in a similar Q poll three years before.[9] In 2007, "Live Forever" placed number one in the NME and XFM poll of the 50 "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever".[10] The song was selected by Noel Gallagher for inclusion on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks in 2006.

The Palazzo (pronounced /pəˈlɑːtsoʊ/) is a hotel and casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas. The Palazzo is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The property's design is marketed as being reflective of a modern European ambiance and luxury living.

Parts of the resort were opened to the general public on December 30, 2007.[1] The official grand opening took place on January 17, 2008.

The .8 billion resort features a Lobby where guests from the street arrive beneath a 60-foot (18 m) glass dome with a two-story fountain. Those approaching from The Venetian make the transition through a towering octagonal structure, itself topped by a glass-and-iron dome. Visitors to The Palazzo using the underground parking structure can take elevators or escalators from the underground garage and arrive in the center of the property's casino.

Though marketed and portrayed as a stand-alone resort, The Palazzo is actually an extension of The Venetian Casino Resort and the Sands Expo complex on the Las Vegas Strip.[citation needed] The Palazzo Casino, like some other casinos on the strip, operates under the license of a related casino—in this case The Venetian's license. The resort's 642-foot (196 m) high hotel tower features 3,068 all-suite rooms and 375 concierge-level suites.

The Palazzo is LEED Silver Certified—the largest LEED certified building in the nation.[2]

Currently under construction, the 270-unit condominium tower addition The St. Regis Residences at The Palazzo will be the first residential offerings at The Venetian complex. The high-rise tower is being built on top of the 90,000-square-foot (8,400 m2) building that houses the Barneys New York apparel store. On September 4, 2008, Las Vegas Sands announced that it had come to an agreement with Starwood Hotels & Resorts to operate the condo tower as a signature branch of The St. Regis Residences with all hallmarks of the St. Regis brand offered to residents.

[edit] Construction

Construction photo taken in July 2007As of February 27, 2006, the project had been under construction for over a year. Most of that time was spent digging the 4-story-deep hole to put in the underground parking structure. Then the building itself began gradually rising upwards. The steel fabrication and erection was supplied by Schuff Steel Company. By November 2006, the hotel tower had reached the 35th floor. Construction of the ground floors, including the parking garage and shopping center, were well under way.

As of March 2007, the hotel tower's elevator core was complete, and the rooms area was rising to the top. The facade and windows were being installed on the lower floors. As of August 2007, the lettering on the side of the tower was finished and is topped out.

As of December 20, 2007 the Palazzo was scheduled to open at least 1,000 rooms by December 28 in preparation for the Las Vegas New Years celebration. The casino and other areas of the Palazzo opened at 7pm on Sunday, December 30, after a delay of several days due to the Clark County permitting process.

Upon its completion, the Palazzo displaced the Pentagon as the largest building in the United States in terms of floor space, by a margin of about 35,580 square meters.[3]

The strucutral engineering was done by Walter P Moore.

Going back through my photos to find images for my new ( currently in the works) website, and I've been finding gems I never posted. Might have to go back and do some edits of shots I left at the time too.

This is the wonderful Madame Bink, much-celebrated art nude model (but here with clothes). This was my first shoot with a model, back in 2010, and Bink gave me a lot of help (she's also a photographer) and helped me to feel at ease.

I think at the time I was frustrated that I couldn't smooth out the bottom of her shoe, which I probably could do now!
