036/365 | Springfield IL - Union Station | Project 365/2010
photo to poster
There was a wintry mix this morning as I positioned myself on the top deck of a parking garage at Sixth and Madison Sts. to take this photograph of Springfield's old Union Station. Completed in 1896, this beautiful depot is now a visitor's center for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Passenger service from this station ended in 1971, and the old train tracks have been replaced by the six-lane Madison St. Corridor.

In this view to the southwest, downtown Springfield is off to the left (south), and about a half mile away is the dome of the Illinois State Capitol Building. At 361 feet, the Illinois State House is the tallest of all domed capitol buildings in the United States.

The Photoshop poster edges effect has been lightly applied in the processing of this image.

For more photographs of downtown Springfield, visit my "Springfield IL - Downtown" (Set).

You are invited to stay and browse through my photostream. Here's a quick index to my Flickr site:

Springfield, Illinois: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.

Beyond Central Illinois: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Automobile Photograph Collection: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Barbers & Barber Shops: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Hampton Springs Hotel Ruins, Florida
upload photos
I uploaded four photos of this park. I have repeated my entire explanation on all four photos, since I doubt that many people will look at more than one of them.

In 1908 a luxury hotel was built over a natural spring. The sulfur-rich spring water was channeled through concrete pools on the ground floor of the hotel. The water was believed to have healing powers.
In 1954 the hotel burned to the ground; the hotel was not rebuilt and the property was not re-developed.

Now Taylor County has developed the location into a park. The ruins of the hotel are visible and the spring water still flows through the concrete pools.

There is a bridge over Spring Creek which leads to a short nature trail. There is potential to find some interesting wildlife here because the entire 12-mile distance sw to the Gulf of Mexico is undeveloped wetlands.

Park has no admission charge. There are restrooms and picnic tables.

-------------------------------------------------

Here's the complete text of a plaque at the entrance:

HAMPTON SPRINGS HOTEL

The Hampton Springs Hotel was built in 1908 and was destroyed by fire in 1954. The hotel was world renowned for its sulphur springs and baths known for their healing and medicinal powers. The luxurious hotel boasted lush gardens with elaborate fountains by the springs, a golf course, tennis courts, stables, casino, grand ballroom, outdoor dance pavilion, and railroad depot. The nine-hole golf course was amoung the first in the region. The hotel had its own bottling plant and shipped the healing sulphur water nationwide. It also had its own power plant and the majority of the food served in the dining room was grown and raised at the hotel farm. The hotel had a private hunting and fishing lodge on Spring Creek six miles from the hotel site and an excursion boat with a covered launch. From the mid 1930s to mid 40s the hotel served as barracks for military personnel testing aircraft at Perry-Foley Airport in nearby Perry. Archaeological excavations here revealed the formation of the hotel and outbuildings.

Cumulonimbus and Lionel Brett council houses, south Hatfield, Herts.
upload photos
Originally uploaded for the Guesswhere UK Group.
This northerly view from the back of my childhood house was taken when I was a teenager and starting to get interested in meteorology. I grew up on this council estate in south Hatfield which was built in 1956. It was designed by architect Lionel Brett (who became 4th Viscount Esher), and was innovative in that the terraced houses curved around the contours of the land in a series of sinuous crescents. They were warm and cosy and had sizeable gardens compared with modern-day council housing. The main distinctive feature was the low-angle single-pitch roof, constructed from timber overlain with aluminium cladding. Each terrace had a single modular roof extending over its entire length.

Unfortunately this design approximated to a crude aerofoil section which was spectacularly demonstrated during a severe gale on the night of 3rd-4th November 1957 when virtually all the houses facing in a westerly direction had their entire roof length lifted clean off and flung for distances of up to a 100 metres away. In this photo, the houses visible in the lower left all lost their roofs, which ended up in the gardens to the right. The houses which faced east (of which ours was fortunately one) were unaffected, as the 'leading edge' of the roof section was not facing into the wind.

I was 5 years old at the time and yet still clearly remember the screaming noise of the wind and the banging and clattering that went on. In those days, the street lighting was automatically switched off at midnight, so all this took place in pitch darkness in the early hours. In the morning when daylight came, I still remember the words of my father as he looked across the road at the houses opposite "I don't know - there's something funny about the houses across the street.... Christ, there's no bloody roofs on them!" And so it was - you could see daylight through the upstairs windows all along the street.

Altogether, over 50 houses were affected and lost their roofs. In those days hardly anyone had a telephone in the house; there was a long queue of people outside the callbox at the end of the street, waiting to phone the council. Amazingly, there were no fatalities and, as far as is known, not even any injuries - quite remarkable when you consider that great sheets of aluminium must have been flying around during the night - could have had your head off in no time.

The subsequent investigation and public enquiry found that in some cases the roofs had not been adequately fixed to the house walls. In the months that followed, repairs were made and structural improvements involving additional strong steel fixing brackets were installed.

The photo was taken 10 years after the event and there is no sign of what had occurred. I continued to live in the house until 1973 and there was never any further storm damage during that time. But to this day I still get jittery during gales.

Sorry about the wonky photo - I didn't hold the camera very straight when I took this, and to have cropped it after straightening would have entailed losing too much picture area.

Taken with an old Kodak bellows camera on 120 roll film and scanned from a print.

See where this picture was taken. [?]

NYC - MoMA: James Rosenquist's Marilyn Monroe, I

Marilyn Monroe, I, 1962
Oil and spray enamel on canvas, 7' 9" x 6' 1/4"
James Rosenquist, American, born 1933

Screen icon and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe (1926-62) was a favorite subject of many pop artists, and she figures prominently in more than fifteen works in the Museum's collection. Here, in a tribute to the actress created soon after her death, Rosenquist inverted, fragmented, and partially obscured her image with a superimposed portion of her name. He also included a segment of the brand name "CocaCola," rendered upsidedown in its trademark script. In pairing Monroe with this famous logo, Rosenquist was suggesting that she is as iconic an example of American popular culture as the ubiquitous soft drink.

States of Mind I: The Farewells, 1911
Oil on canvas, 27 3/4 x 37 3/8" (70.5 x 96.2 cm).
Umberto Boccioni (Italian, 1882-1916)

Set in a train station, the series of three paintings, States of Mind I-III</i explores the psychological dimension of modern life's transitory nature. In The Farewells, Boccioni captures chaotic movement and the fusion of people swept away in waves as the train's steam bellows into the sky. Oblique lines hint at departure in Those Who Go, in which Boccioni said he sought to express "loneliness, anguish, and dazed confusion." In Those Who Stay, vertical lines convey the weight of sadness carried by those left behind.

NYC - Metropolitan Museum of Art: Salvador Dalí's Madonna
photo to canvas
Madonna
1958
Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904-1989)
Oil on canvas; 88 7/8 x 75 1/4 in. (225.7 x 191.1 cm)

Salvador Dalí became an official member of the Surrealist group in 1929, and even after he was expelled by its leader, André Breton, in 1941, his work continued to reflect the influence of Surrealist thought and methodology. Dalí's paintings feature intellectual puzzles and visual ambiguities, and his style is marked by superrealistic illusionism that is used to describe completely unrealistic, fanciful subjects. Madonna is one of several works Dalí made after 1941 that uses classical imagery as the basis for Surrealist invention. Here, he paints two different simultaneous subjects with a profusion of gray and pink dots: a Madonna and Child based on Raphael's Sistine Madonna (Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, after 1513), and a large ear, whose ridged interior surface is defined by the presence of these two figures. Each motif is designed to come into focus at a different distance. At close range, the painting looks completely abstract; from about six feet away, it reveals the Madonna and Child; and from fifty feet, it is what the artist called "the ear of an angel." To the left of the main images is a trompe-l'oeil detail of a red cherry suspended on a string from a torn and folded piece of paper; its shadow is cast onto another piece of paper bearing the signature of the artist.

Gift of Drue Heinz, in memory of Henry J. Heinz II, 1987 (1987.465)

**
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection contains more than two million works of art from around the world. It opened its doors on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Under their guidance of John Taylor Johnston and George Palmer Putnam, the Met's holdings, initially consisting of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 mostly European paintings, quickly outgrew the available space. In 1873, occasioned by the Met's purchase of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot antiquities, the museum decamped from Fifth Avenue and took up residence at the Douglas Mansion on West 14th Street. However, these new accommodations were temporary; after negotiations with the city of New York, the Met acquired land on the east side of Central Park, where it built its permanent home, a red-brick Gothic Revival stone "mausoleum" designed by American architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold. As of 2006, the Met measures almost a quarter mile long and occupies more than two million square feet, more than 20 times the size of the original 1880 building.

In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked #17 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967. The interior was designated in 1977.

--- The Ultimate BBQ Steak

............................................

A lucky girl am I married to the king of all BBQs. Dov can make a mean steak; he’s methodical about choosing the right cut, marinating them and cooking them to perfect medium-rare temperature. Dov will make a BBQ warm weather or in a blizzard; nothing can come between a man and his steak. Our once-a-week home BBQ has taught me a great deal about meat and its complexities.

For the Marinade:

2 steaks, rinsed & patted dry
3 Tbsp. steak seasoning mix (mesquite flavoring)
Kosher salt & black pepper
½ cup teriyaki sauce
2 Tbsp. honey
1 tsp. ginger
½ cup hickory BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)

For the Glaze:

½ cup teriyaki sauce
2 Tbsp. honey
1 tsp. ginger
½ cup hickory BBQ sauce
2 tsp. spicy Dijon mustard (optional)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Or place on grill that has been already preheated and is very hot and has been coated lightly with cooking spray. (If gas grill keep it on med heat)

Take a fork and punch small holes into the meat of your steak. Combine the steak seasoning with the Kosher salt and pepper and rub into the top and bottom of your steak. In a small bowl combine all the remaining marinade ingredients, mix well. Put the steaks into a Ziploc bag and then pour in your marinade. Refrigerate for up to 4 hours or at least 30 minutes before grilling.

Heat your grill. Remove steaks from marinade and wipe off excess with paper towels. Grill off both sides of your steak for about 2 minutes each side. While the steaks are grilling combine your glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Remove steaks from grill and place into aluminum pan. Brush both side of steaks with your glaze using a pastry brush and finish cooking in the oven until your steaks reach 130 degrees for medium rare, (about 8-10 minutes).

..........................................

Late one night when in my eighth month of pregnancy, my husband and I saw a piece about an all night restaurant that serves chicken wings and waffles. I can’t even describe the cravings that report elicited, so much so, that I made my poor husband go out and beg our local chicken take out place to stay open 10 minutes longer to satisfy my hunger. I have since had my daughter, but still have cravings for these chicken wings.

12-16 chicken wings, rinsed and patted dry
¼ cup orange juice
¼ cup honey
¼ cup spicy Dijon mustard
¼ cup hickory BBQ sauce (favorite brand)
For the Mustard Glaze:
¾ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup sweet teriyaki sauce
3 Tbsp. spicy Dijon mustard
1 tsp. ground ginger powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. soy sauce

Extra ginger powder for sprinkling

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Or keep on the med-high side of your grill and cover with hood for 6-8 minutes on each side.

Place the chicken wings in a heavy duty Ziploc bag. Mix all the remaining ingredients in a small bowl blending well. Pour mixture into Ziploc bag and gently shake, coating all wings as best as you can. Place into refrigerator and let marinate for at least 30 minutes or ideally up to 4 hours or more.

In another small bowl, mix together all the glaze ingredients, combining well. Set aside.

Drain and remove wings from marinade and pat dry with paper towel. Place the wings in a large baking tray. Sprinkle with ginger powder over the top of the wings, then using a pastry brush coat each wing thoroughly with the glaze mixture that you made. Place into oven and bake about 20-25 minutes. Remove and pile up onto a plate and dig in.

--- BBQ FRUIT SALAD

This salad is super easy to make and does not need a lot of your time. As I prep for my BBQ, I cut the cherries and throw them together in the bowl with my whole blueberries. I make the dressing and set it aside. I then start to BBQ the fruit only after all the meat is finished cooking on the BBQ and while everyone else is enjoying the burgers and steaks the fruit cooks. I then quickly cut and toss all the rest together with the dressing and serve with some Pareve Ice Cream or Whip Cream!

1 whole pineapple, cut into 1/2 inch rounds
6 peaches or nectarines, halved with pit removes
1 cup pitted cherries, diced
1 pint whole blueberries
for dressing:
3 tbsp. apricot or peach preserve
2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp ground ginger

On your hot BBQ, grill the pineapple and peaches for about 4 minutes each side. When finished cut them into bite size pieces and toss into a big bowl with the cut cherries and whole blueberries. Mix all the ingredients for the dressing in a separate small bowl, and then pour over the cut fruit. Mix well and serve.

Your Last and Most Delicious Summer Barbecue

In the good ol’ days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and fire was the only form of instant messaging, school didn’t start until AFTER Labor Day. Vacations and pool parties were planned right up until the day when we all trudged 10 miles (uphill both ways) to the non-air conditioned halls of education.

But now that schools start earlier and Labor Day is the first “get out of jail free” day, I find that a celebratory barbeque is called for.

What better way to end summer with a flourish than to serve hot dogs and hamburgers with bunches and bunches of yummy toppings so that everyone can build their own mega meal…and sit back and enjoy a last day of culinary freedom?

Keep the basics topping for your burgers and dawgs but tweak them: Relish, mustards of all kinds, ketchup, sauerkraut, and onions are always appreciated but add a kick by caramelizing the onions and adding jalapeno or horseradish to your ketchup. Try serving salsa, guacamole, chili, BBQ or pizza sauce. Chopped olives, cooked salami, and these simple recipes for some savory toppings help make this last official summer meal one of the best ever.
