The Hansa 1500 is a medium sized saloon that was manufactured by the Bremen based auto-manufacturer Carl F. W. Borgward GmbH. The strikingly modern car first rolled off the production line on October 13 1949 and was replaced by the Borgward Isabella in 1954. It is claimed as the first all new model launched by the German auto industry after the war. Introduced nearly four years before the better remembered ’Ponton Mercedes’ the Hansa featured the then revolutionary three box form that subsequently became mainstream in Germany and across much of Europe.

As all photographers, I prefer to take my photos around sunset. But sometime, especially during winter months, the sunsets are quite boring. With a clear sky, they look mostly grey. So what I do, is I wait for the blue hour. Even with a clear sky, the blue is really stunning.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

About Patrick Hoesly:
I’m a graphic illustrator, specializing in architectural illustrations and graphic design. I work with Architects, Interior Designers, and Landscape Architects, to help them visualize and sell their designs ...Or in other words... I make the fun/cool images!

✹ To see a view of the complete box - including the lid - click here.

This box is one of 20 different boxes for sale by auction on eBay in support of survivors of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan. Click here to visit / to return to the eBay listing [Item number: 120728863847]. The auction for this item closes on Friday the 3rd of June 2011 at 00:02 a.m. British Summer Time (UTC + 1).

Click here to see a thumbnail overview of all the boxes, or watch a Slideshow of all the boxes.

Proceeds of the auction - after eBay and PayPal fees have been deducted - will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

✹ To see a larger, more detailed, view of this picture click on the small magnifying glass icon at the top right of the picture, then click on "View all sizes", then click on "Original" - which displays the largest and best quality image.

Some of the papers used to make this item have been kindly subsidised by Oki Nami Japanese Restaurant, New Road, Brighton, East Sussex, UK - who also have an origami paper shop in the back.

About the Japanese Red Cross Society

The Japanese Red Cross are one of three major fundraising organisaitions based in Japan (the other two being the Japanese broadcaster NHK and the Red Feather Central Community Chest of Japan - originally a post World War II re-building organisation). You can download two english language reports relating to the disaster from the Japanese Red Cross website:

Operations Update No.1 - 13th April 2011 [.pdf file, retrieved 17th May 2011]
Operations Update No.2 - 6th May 2011 [.pdf file, retrieved 17th May 2011]

Over two months on, the needs of many of the survivors remain desperately basic. There has been an increased incidence of pneumonia and associated fatalities. As well as helping with practical and medical requirements, the Japanese Red Cross Society are helping people deal with "Shell Shock" / Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and further developing services to address these issues.

Perhaps most impressively, they helped quickly set up a management structure to co-ordinate help from all the major fundraisers, a committee including academics and representatives from the 15 most badly affected prefectures [local governments]. The pre-existing local Red Cross chapters [branches] are helping with governance.

Although Japan has a large economy, and domestically the japanese have been hugely generous towards aid efforts, like everywhere else, many people of course are not personally rich. There is still epic upheaval. Much of welfare is normally provided by family and community, a system that breaks down when whole barrios are fragmented and diminished. Services like adoption and fostering, for example - normally always done by relatives - are having to be developed. A planning policy of building schools on higher ground saved many children, but even after encouraging teachers back out of retirement, there is still a shortage of experienced teachers. Japan is mostly mountains and sea, with very little spare land suitable for building, so temporary accommodation has had to be built on land normally reserved for other activities, for example on school playgrounds.

If you enjoy shopping in support of the Japanese Red Cross Society, you might also like Tomodachi Calling, a cafepress web store / shop (recommend by a fellow flickrer schmid91, who helped document the aftermath of the tsunami in Ishinomaki Myagi prefecture).

About the decorative hexagonal origami gift box

The box is made up from 12 square origami papers - 6 for the lid and 6 for the base. No cutting, glue or adhesive tape is used.

Although Japan has a long tradition of paper folding, the design of the box is modern, by Tomoko Fuse 布施 知子, who is a renown unit origami designer and artist. Unit origami is a method of building up models using pre-folded components or units.

If you are an accurate and consistent paper folder, but are new to unit origami, and you would like to make your own box, I would recommend her book "Origami Boxes: Moribana Style" [# ISBN-10: 0870408216 - # ISBN-13: 978-0870408212] as an excellent introduction. Connecting the units together can be a bit fiddly at first, and the book also includes designs for more simple square and triangular boxes, which give the opportunity to practice and develop the skills needed for doing the final assembly.

(Until Asimo gets a bit more nimble fingered, the box is unlikely to flood the market anytime soon...)

If you get the bug, she has also created and written about very much more complex models. "Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations" [ISBN-10: 0870408526 - ISBN-13: 978-0870408526] is considered a classic text on the subject.

Paper making was a traditional supplemental business of farmers in Japan during the winter. The very cold water during that season enabled the fibres in the pulp to be soaked without becoming subject to decay, and some also argue that cold shrinks the fibres, creating a finer, crisper paper.

1971 BMW E9 3.0 CSL (06)
make a picture
Introduced in May 1972, the 3.0CSL was a homologation special built to make the car eligible for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. The "L" in the designation meant "leicht" (light), unlike in other BMW designations, where it meant "lang" (long). The lightness was achieved by using thinner steel to build the unit body, deleting the trim and soundproofing, using aluminium alloy doors, bonnets, and boot lids, and using Perspex side windows. The five hundred 3.0CSLs exported to the United Kingdom were not quite as light as the others, as the importer had insisted on retaining the soundproofing, electric windows, and stock E9 bumpers on these cars.

Initially using the same engine as the 3.0CS, the 3.0CSL was given a very small increase in displacement to 3,003 cc (183.3 cu in) by increasing the engine bore by one quarter of a millimetre. This was done in August 1972 to allow the CSL to be raced in the "over three litre" racing category, allowing for some increase in displacement in the racing cars. In 1973, the engine in the 3.0CSL was given another, more subtantial increase in displacement to 3,153 cc (192.4 cu in) by increasing the stroke to 84 mm (3.3 in). This final version of the 3.0CSL was homologated in July 1973 along with an aerodynamic package including a large air dam, short fins running along the front fenders, a spoiler above and behind the trailing edge of the roof, and a tall rear wing. The rear wings were not installed at the factory, but were left in the boot for installation after purchase. This was done because the wings were illegal for use on German roads. The full aero package earned the racing CSLs the nickname "Batmobile".

Bottom of clay pot, Kabala, Sierra Leone (West Africa)
make a picture
Photo taken in 1967 or 1968. This was probably originally used as a cooking pot, but was being used as a water-storage pot in the 1960s.

Very rough notes on pottery making collected by Edward Conteh and me in Kamabai, Sierra Leone from a Limba potter (the techniques might have been different for the pictured pot):

Pots made from white ant's hill clay (fá`a). Millet stalks mixed with clay; clay pounded together with the stalks. She then makes a coil out of the clay by turning it between her hands. Makes the mouth of the pot first in a coil and then builds the coils up and around, piling them on top of one another. Uses a calabash to shape the bottom and then sets the pot out in the sun to dry. The coils come up about four-fifths of the way to the bottom. Initial drying takes about 4 or 5 days during the dry season and 6 or seven days or more, depending on the weather, during the rainy season. Kukuthea [I haven't found what this is called in English yet] is pounded and put in a calabash and mixed with water. The pot is fired upside-down with a pile of dry material under and around it. Upside-down so that the pot's inside will get very hot. She uses a stick to pull the pot from the fire by putting it underneath and lifting it out. The pot is then put into the calabash full of water and kukuthea which will then boil if the pot is good. Kukuthea's action is somewhat like a cementing. The pot is left in the kukuthea mixture for just a few minutes and then taken out to become very dry and strong. If she knocks on it and it sounds like a calabash, then it is a good pot. If not, it sounds like dry mud. It's left on the fire until it gets very red (?1 1/2 hours?). They decorated the pots in the past; one person would use only one decoration, and they would be decorated for buyer appeal. One with fine decorations one would say was a fine pot. Not all people used to decorate the country pots. Decorations put on before putting them in the sun. This woman used her finger only to decorate, but says others used to decorate their pots with sticks. Very small pots were used to cook medicines [this appears to have been the case in other parts of Norther Sierra Leone also]. Other small pots were used for putting pepper in while eating (sort of a serving plate) and others were used for cooking sauces, etc. The very big ones were used for storing water. The biggest country pot she has ever seen was about 2 1/2 feet across and 2 feet high. Very small pots still used for medicine in the 1960s.

A big one today (60 Mpix :) ). Those of you who follow me on facebook know that I recently bought a Panoramic head, the Nodal Ninja 4. I also posted few shot of how it looks and how I used it for this photo there. And this is the first result I’m publishing. This is a 180 degree vertorama, created from 7 photos. At first it should have been a HDR vertorama (I took multiple brackets), but as it was quite windy there, the ghosting was just too much. So instead I created this from single exposures, and I used some of the steps I do in HDR post processing on it.

Conveni de Bonn: Annex 2 (Objecte d’acords internacionals)
Reial Decret 439/1990: Annex 2 (Espècie d’interès especial)
Directiva 79/409: Annex 1 y 2

Dimensiones:
Longitud total: alrededor de 65 cm
Envergadura: alrededor de 80 cm
Peso: unos 5 kg
Coloración: Plumaje enteramente blanco. Pico amarillo.

* Ardea cinerea cinerea Linnaeus, 1758. Europa, África, oeste de Asia.
* Ardea cinerea jouyi Clark, 1907. Este de Asia.
* Ardea cinerea firasa Hartert, 1917. Madagascar.
* Ardea cinerea monicae Jouanin & Roux, 1963. Islas Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania.

I've been a very bad blogger. I haven't posted anything in about a week. Normally I post daily, but in the past couple months I've had to slow down because of the ebook, which has been taking up a good portion of my time from my blog. But the good news is, it's almost done! I'm now working on the last couple of pages of the final chapter. So far I'm on schedule, but I'm not sure how long it's gonna take to proofread an edit the final copy. I will announce the release of the book in the monthly newlstter. Sign up for the newsletter if you haven't already done so to get the latest update.

As for this photo, I did a few things different. Instead of the normal three exposures, I used only 2. And instead of using Detail Enhancer, I used Exposure Fusion for tone mapping. But the secret to this photo wasn't in Photomatix, it was in Photoshop. I used shadow/highlights to bring out the detail in the pier and foreground. I also used my normal Photoshop processing techniques to put in the finishing touches. I discuss all this in more detail within the ebook.

Parenting In Action
nature image
In this image the parent Barn Owl has just dropped off food to the young Barn Owl on top of the owl box on our property. The young owl hasn't been fed in at least fifteen hours and it's been screeching for food impatiently every since it came outside about twenty minutes earlier. The owls only come out and hunt (or wait for a delivery) after the sun has set.

Strobist info: Here's the description of the setup that I use for photographing the Barn Owls, and the owl house. The owl house is on top of a fifteen foot pole, which is about two feet in the ground, so the bottom of owl house is about thirteen feet off of the ground. I have one tall light stand on either side of the owl house, extended as high as they will go, and a third shorter light stand in the middle. The one on the left is lower because it is positioned on a slope that goes down from the house. The light stand in the middle is a shorter stand than the others, but it is extended as high as it will go. The flash on the left is a YN560, the middle flash is a Strobie 130 and the flash on the right is a YN560-II. All thee strobes are in manual mode set at 1/2 power. The middle and right flash are triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603 and the left flash is in slave mode and is triggered by the light from the other two flashes. I have a Yongnuo RF-603-N trigger on my camera which is triggered by an identical trigger that I have in my hand while sitting in a chair off camera. The Yongnuo triggers can act as either transmitter or receiver. The great thing about these triggers is that they are reliable, and are about for a pair of them on Amazon. Wonderful technology at an amazing price. They're cheap, they work and they have a range of 15 meters.

Pictures that I've taken of the Barn Owls can be seen in my Barn Owls set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157630045851110/
