Maybe not the most artistic photo of the Church of the Annuciation of the Virgin Mary but I think it is a very realistic photo of this very beautiful church.

"Bokeh (derived from Japanese, a noun boke 暈け, meaning "blurred or fuzzy") is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field." [Wikipedia]

Click here to visit / to return to the eBay listing [Item number: 120728924630]. The auction for this item closes on Friday the 3rd of June 2011 at 03:47 a.m. British Summer Time (UTC + 1).

✹ To see a larger, more detailed, view of this picture click on the small magnifying glass icon at the top right of the picture, then click on "View all sizes", then click on "Original" - which displays the largest and best quality image.

The papers used to make this item have been kindly subsidised by Oki Nami Japanese Restaurant, New Road, Brighton, East Sussex, UK - who also have an origami paper shop in the back.

About the Japanese Red Cross Society

The Japanese Red Cross are one of three major fundraising organisaitions based in Japan (the other two being the Japanese broadcaster NHK and the Red Feather Central Community Chest of Japan - originally a post World War II re-building organisation). You can download two english language reports relating to the disaster from the Japanese Red Cross website:

Operations Update No.1 - 13th April 2011 [.pdf file, retrieved 17th May 2011]
Operations Update No.2 - 6th May 2011 [.pdf file, retrieved 17th May 2011]

Over two months on, the needs of many of the survivors remain desperately basic. There has been an increased incidence of pneumonia and associated fatalities. As well as helping with practical and medical requirements, the Japanese Red Cross Society are helping people deal with "Shell Shock" / Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and further developing services to address these issues.

Perhaps most impressively, they helped quickly set up a management structure to co-ordinate help from all the major fundraisers, a committee including academics and representatives from the 15 most badly affected prefectures [local governments]. The pre-existing local Red Cross chapters [branches] are helping with governance.

Although Japan has a large economy, and domestically the japanese have been hugely generous towards aid efforts, like everywhere else, many people of course are not personally rich. There is still epic upheaval. Much of welfare is normally provided by family and community, a system that breaks down when whole barrios are fragmented and diminished. Services like adoption and fostering, for example - normally always done by relatives - are having to be developed. A planning policy of building schools on higher ground saved many children, but even after encouraging teachers back out of retirement, there is still a shortage of experienced teachers. Japan is mostly mountains and sea, with very little spare land suitable for building, and so - while rebuilding takes place - temporary accommodation has had to be built on land normally reserved for other activities, for example on school playgrounds.

If you enjoy shopping in support of the Japanese Red Cross Society, you might also like Tomodachi Calling, a cafepress web store / shop (recommend by a fellow flickrer schmid91, who helped document the aftermath of the tsunami in Ishinomaki Myagi prefecture).

About the decorative hexagonal origami gift box

The box is made up from 12 square origami papers - 6 for the lid and 6 for the base. No cutting, glue or adhesive tape is used.

Although Japan has a long tradition of paper folding, the design of the box is modern, by Tomoko Fuse 布施 知子, who is a renown unit origami designer and artist. Unit origami is a method of building up models using pre-folded components or units.

If you are an accurate and consistent paper folder, but are new to unit origami, and you would like to make your own box, I would recommend her book "Origami Boxes: Moribana Style" [# ISBN-10: 0870408216 - # ISBN-13: 978-0870408212] as an excellent introduction. Connecting the units together can be a bit fiddly at first, and the book also includes designs for more simple square and triangular boxes, which give the opportunity to practice and develop the skills needed for doing the final assembly.

(Until Asimo gets a bit more nimble fingered, the box is unlikely to flood the market anytime soon...)

If you get the bug, she has also created and written about very much more complex models. "Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations" [ISBN-10: 0870408526 - ISBN-13: 978-0870408526] is considered a classic text on the subject.

Paper making was a traditional supplemental business of farmers in Japan during the winter. The very cold water during that season enabled the fibres in the pulp to be soaked without becoming subject to decay, and some also argue that cold shrinks the fibres, creating a finer, crisper paper.

Today I upload 3 pictures instead of one. Sometimes the whole process of taking pictures is so tiring for me, I don't want to think about choosing one.
If I can only convince myself to name them for different days of my 365. :-) Alas! That's not going to happen. I cheat - but not this much..

This happens to be my favourite bag. I got it off ASOS real cheap. Good nice canvas and sturdy leather straps. I usually carry it around everywhere I go. And that small badge I got as a gift recently. I like it too...

Take care...

Below is an excerpt from my travel blog. Cheers.

Again, I've noted that running a simple blog is a fast track education into the social networking world. Having looked into revamping my website in the last few weeks, I've been reading heavily about the social networking capabilities the internet has to offer. As a photographer, it's key to be aware of how to utilize this to your benefit. It can make or break you as a photographer. I'll try and share my knowledge with you from time to time.

A few of my friends take photos on a daily basis and post them on Facebook as if it was their social dairy. This is great, but a lot of people on Facebook aren't as concerned with blogging as much as they are keeping up with their friends. One site (and social networking platform), which is at the forefront of blogging is Tumblr (www.tumblr.com). This brilliant site has capitalized on people's desire to create a blog without having the hassle of hiring website designers and paying and arm and a leg to have a server host your site. You even are assigned your own html address so there's no hassle of your friends having to sign into a foreign platform to locate your portfolio. Taken directly from Tumblr's website, 'Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. Post text, photos, quotes, links, music, and videos, from your browser, phone, desktop, email or wherever you might be. You can also customize everything from your colors to your html themes.' Basically it's your own website where you can share your photos/media and other people's interesting photos/media. As a photographer, I find my photos re-blogged over and over again on people's tumblr page from my flickr site (see www.LostManProject.com). Running a successful blog no longer requires you to understand internet code or open your wallet up. It's now as easy as signing up on Tumblr. Check it out if you're interested in setting up your own blog.

I shot this in New Zealand while traveling through the Haast Pass in the Mount Aspiring National Park.

NY - Hyde Park: Vanderbilt Mansion NHS - Pavilion Visitor's Center
photo sites
Designed by McKim, Mead, and White, this building was erected by Norcross Brothers in 66 working days, September 8 to November 24, 1895, on the site of the old Langdon carriage house. Cost of the structure probably exceeded ,000. The pavilion was used by the Vanderbilts during the construction and furnishing of the mansion, and, later, on weekends in the winter season when they came to Hyde Park for winter sports. The pavilion was also used to house the overflow of guests from the mansion.

The pavilion represents an adaption of classic Greek architecture. Certain liberties have been taken in the interest of functional arrangement, such as the placement of window openings and modifications necessary for the captain's walk on the roof. The result is a pleasing combination of classic form and informal detail.

Today the Pavilion serves as the Visitor's Center for the National Historic Site.

When Frederick W. Vanderbilt died in 1938, the Hyde Park estate, including the Vanderbilt Mansion was bequeathed to Mrs. James Van Alen, a niece of Mrs. Vanderbilt. Two years later, Mrs. Van Alen gave the estate to the Federal Government, and on December 18, 1940, it was designated a National Historic Site. Since that time it has been administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

Please take a large view!

Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located in the northwest of the country.

The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is egg-shaped and about 430 hectares in size. The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 193.7 hectares off the coast, at Zeebrugge ("Seabruges" in literal translation). The city's total population is more than 117,000, of which around 20,000 live in the historic centre.

Bruges has, because of its port, a significant economic importance and is also home to the College of Europe.

I had a great afternoon with Kris Kros (Joe)! We've known one another for years, and, like so many people, I've always admired his work. He's one of many of you cool photographers here on Flickr that inspires me to change and experiment. I was just as impressed with his person as his photography.

I had a few spare hours on Saturday, so I contacted Joe that morning to see if he had some spare time, and, luckily, so did he! We started out by planning to go around LA shooting, but I think we spent about 75% of the time sitting around cafes while discussing photography, art, techniques, and a bunch of other adventures!

My Tutorial is right here - I have over 16,500 unread emails - sorry but I am too swamped - but most of you ask for that tutorial, so there it is! :)

Her Evening Elegance

A Texas sunset settled on the farm as we patiently waited for the sky to repaint itself every few minutes.

It was a very relaxing hour, watching the sun slowly descend through the clouds, interrupted on occasion by a stressful swapping of lenses. I hate to get dust in the chamber, so the changing of lenses is always a high-anxiety event! But the anxiety faded away pretty quick as we started watching the sunset again.

My friend Leslie had invited me out to her parent's farm near Brady. She's an actress, a model, a photographer, and a bunch of other creative things... so I had told her I would spend equal amounts of time shooting the farm, her animals, and her. It's the old 33/33/33 rule of farm-shooting. Anyway, I am sure some of you would rather see photos of her... and still others of her animals... but I can't make everyone happy at once, so you'll just have to wait a few weeks for me to sprinkle those in! Until then, I hope you enjoy the sunset.

Updates may be slow in coming days... I'll be spending about two weeks on an adventure in Patagonia... keep your eye on www.stuckincustoms.com for the latest! :)

Thanks everyone for your comments! :) I read them all!

This magnificent ship has played host to some of the most famous people in the world. But, above all, she was home to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. Now in Edinburgh you are welcome on board to discover the heart and soul of this most special of royal residences.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the world's most famous ships. Launched at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank in 1953, the Royal Yacht proudly served Queen and country for 44 years. During that time Britannia carried The Queen and the Royal Family on 968 official voyages, from the remotest regions of the South Seas to the deepest divides of Antarctica.

Britannia is now permanently moored in Edinburgh's historic port of Leith and visitors can discover what life was like on board the ship for the Royal Family and crew.

On 11 December 1997 Britannia was decommissioned and became a 5-star visitor attraction in Edinburgh after the city bid to become her new home and one of the UK's most prestigious hospitality venues.

If you like this image, please leave a comment. Thanks!

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

Shane Warne Spin King Gets Hot Wheels In Sin City Sydney, By Eva Rinaldi

Shane Warne aka 'The Spin King', continues to race ahead of the pack and reinvent himself, be it on Australian or European soil.

He's endorsed video and audio companies, online poker, and now toys (no, not dolls), cars... Hot Wheels cars from Mattel to be exact.

Today he appeared at a press conference in Surry Hills, Sydney, to tell us all about what he sees in Hot Wheels.

On the surface Warne looks to be a pretty good match. He loves his cars (owning a number of real sports cars in his private collection), is known for his fast women (now just one - lucky Liz), who has him in good shape thanks to the "Liz Effect", as Warnie puts it, and who knows what else is in the pipeline. Young men around the world may do well to note that Mr Warne has settled down now with the one lovely lady now and that commitment to the one lass can be a very good thing.

A couple of whispers overheard at today's presser went something like "Doesn't Mattel also do Barbie and Ken dolls (TM)." For the record there was nothing on Ken or Barbie.

The Hot Wheels 'Spin King' has supposed to be a bit of a secret, but we suspect that was all part of the media and marketing plan. You know, make something a secret, so it gets written and talked about. If that's the case, Mattel and Team Warnie have done their jobs well. Warne is understood to have "collaborated" with Mattel's Hot Wheels for about 6 months, and the financial terms of the deal are not being released, at least at this stage. It must be good, since Warne and his management are used to cranking deals with online poker brands and the like, and those don't come cheap.

'The Spin King' signature range designed by Australian sports stars sure looks hot (if your into toy cars).

This is not the virgin car deal for Mr Warne. Last year Warnie was named Lamborghini's Australian ambassador and gifted a 0,000 Murcielago as a "long-term loan car", and a couple of Lambos' were seen racing around East Sydney earlier today, so perhaps he was driving one of them. You can bet Warnie and Liz's kids are doing to have a ball of a time playing with all the toys they will be gifted by Mattel and Hot Wheels.

Warnie's press statements included something along the lines of "I've always has a passion for cars. I used to play with Hot Wheels cars as a kid, so when they offered me the chance to design my own, I jumped at it". Containing his excitement he also shared "I loved every minute of the design process and working with the team at hot Wheels was great fun. The 'Spin King' is a fusion between all of my favorite fast cars and its been great seeing my vision come to life". To Australian press (and public) he had an equally important message: "When Liz and I settle down in Melbourne please respect our privacy and don't throw rocks at our place at 2am in the morning. I've told Liz Melbourne is beautiful".

It was a hot looking brochure and media kit, but sadly no Hot Wheels car in the pack, but Christmas is coming, so here's hoping.

Thanks for the great photos Warnie. Sydney is the quick and the dead, and we did our best, so we're hoping you like them.

Verdict: Shane Warne and Mattel's Hot Wheels gets the green light. They are to hit stores in March 2012, and we're told they are worth the wait. Catch them if you can.

My interesting take, ending with sharing something from the word of God - the 9 fruits of the Spirit. The Bible, the Holy, Inspired Word of God, shares attributes I think we can all aspire to. Sounds so simple, sometimes so hard to do...
----------------------------------------------------------------
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. - Galations 5:22, 23

Image by Tangent~Artifact, here sometimes :)
Time for some link sharing :)

It’s not a dedication or a tribute, even less an attempt to imitate, but here I was particularly inspired by one the most talented photographer around, certainly the best from different perspectives. I’m talking of Gary Isaacs, someone who let us dream of a thousand stories through just one picture.

Interestingly, I was directed to his stream by another one of the best here, my dear friend Azli Jamil. Besides many other things, thanks Az for sharing that kind of knowledge with newbies :) Because, if you rely on Explore, you won't find Gary...

I used again a texture from Solitaire Miles. Solitaire is not only a great graphic artist, but also a wonderful jazz vocalist. If you like jazz... Check it out!

I'm happy to say that I was in Chicago during one of the last nice days of the year. First of all my apologies to all my friends who live in the area that didn't know I was coming. It was a blitzkrieg.

This image is a 6-shot panorama which I took at the end of a fantastic engagement photoshoot (a preview is available here ). Immediately after shooting this, I headed back into the city to meet up with Heidi and a close friend for the Lights Festival. After that, I drove home.

I'm pumped for this short week. I'm also excited for the really great images I have to share with everyone. Keep checking back!

Check out a larger size here. Or just press "L".
