Photographers expand horizons in 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest 110311

By Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Brenda Walker strolled upon “one of those right places at the right time” alongside East Fork Indian Creek River when she photographed “Morning Serenity” on Fort Campbell, Ky…

Retired Col. Richard Pugh shot three photographs of “Point Lobos,” just south of Monterey, Calif., and combined them into one image by working 15 minutes with Photoshop…

Staff Sgt. Pablo Piedra won a footrace with his wife to the bottom of a stairwell at Heidelberg Castle in Germany just before he looked up and photographed “9”…

…all three were winners in the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest sponsored by the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command.

There were 3,691 entries from around the world – 1,348 in Division I for active duty military personnel and 2,343 in Division II for other eligible MWR patrons. After Army garrisons selected their best entries, 664 Division I and 1,031 Division II photographs were forwarded for Department of the Army judging.

“There were many really excellent photos, which made the judges’ decisions a difficult task,” said Linda Ezernieks, who monitors the annual contest at Army MWR Headquarters in Alexandria. “Originality, creativity and technical quality were the main criteria in making final selections.”

Winners in each category – animals, digital darkroom, design elements, military life, monochrome, nature & landscapes, people, and still life – were posted on a website where Army Knowledge Online account-holders voted for their favorite photo in each division.

Walker’s “Morning Serenity” took first place in the nature and landscapes category and was voted the most popular photograph in Division II.

The subject of the photo is a fisherman wading and casting in the middle of East Fork Indian Creek River while the sun shines through the lush, green trees and casts a rainbow-like appearance off the steam hovering above the stream.

“It’s back on Fort Campbell,” Walker said. “I take my dog running back there early morning. It was really hot and the steam was rising and the rays were going through the trees. It was absolutely beautiful back there.

“I take my camera everywhere I go now.”

Walker left her business card on the windshield of a truck parked nearby and later learned the fisherman was Sgt. Randy Shorter of Fort Campbell.

About five years ago, Walker took some of her photographs to the MWR Custom Framing Shop at Fort Campbell, where she found out about the Army Photography Contest. She has produced prize-winning photos for the past three contests.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get exposure, plus cash prizes,” said Walker, 48, a military family member. “I enjoy looking at everybody else’s work. It inspires me and motivates me to get out and get more interesting, different shots.”

What does Walker enjoy most about photography?

“Just being able to capture what I see through my eyes, my heart and my head,” she said. “A lot of it comes out through your emotion. It’s another form of art.”

Pugh, of Clarksville, Tenn., took first place in the Division II digital darkroom category with “The Owl,” second in design elements with “Blue Mosque,” and third in nature and landscapes with “Point Lobos.”

Pugh shot the high-tech looking photo of “The Owl” at Land Between The Lakes, a national recreation area located south of Paducah, Ky., and embellished it in Photoshop, as he did with “Blue Mosque,” a shot of the roof of a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I like this contest,” said Pugh, 65, who photographed winning entries in each of the past three years after serving 30 years in the Army. “It gives people a chance to show off something they did, which is great.”

Piedro, 31, an Army recruiter in Douglasville, Ga., is a former combat photographer. His “9” earned first-place honors in the Division I design elements category. He took third place in digital darkroom with a self-portrait called “Beast within Me” that would make a dandy Halloween poster.

“I got the idea when I was in the gym working out with my partner and a couple people came up to us and said: ‘You guys are lifting like beasts.’ The idea just popped into my head, so I got home, took the shot, and just started editing,” Piedro said. “That’s where that photo came from.”

The subject of the photo looks like a cross between a werewolf, a vampire and an Avatar, complete with fangs, dagger-like fingernails and alien ears – seemingly howling at the moon that looms behind a naked tree.

“The fangs, the ears, the eyes and the hands are all Photoshopped,” Piedro said. “And the stomach that’s concaved a little bit, that was done in Photoshop. For the background, I took certain parts of images from other photos, adjusted them, and made everything into one image.”

So what’s real?

“The body, and the face,” Piedro replied. “That’s it.

“If you look closely, the eyes are actually black and the pupils are red, so that’s been Photoshopped.”

Piedro, however, does not think of himself as a Photoshop expert.

“I actually don’t do too much Photoshop,” he said. “I try to keep my images as pure as possible. But every now and then, I get my creative side and I do a little bit of Photoshop – just trial and error, playing around.”

Piedro won two categories and received an honorable mention in the 2007 Army Photography Contest but missed the competition the past two years.

“I think it’s a great, great program,” he said. “It’s a great way to get the creative process of people that do see the world and travel the world by being in the military, and not even just as Soldiers, but supporting staff, civilians, wives.

“It’s a great way to get recognition for something that we love to do.”

As is often the case with photography, Piedro did not know exactly what he shot that day in the stairwell to the gardens at Heidelberg Castle – until he downloaded the photo.

“When I got home and I looked at, I was like: ‘That’s 9, yeah.’ And that’s where the title came from.”

Piedro cherishes photography’s uncanny ability of giving him the opportunity of “freezing a moment in time that only I can see and sharing that with others.”

Several other military photographers earned multiple places in the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest.

Holly Swegle of Fort Hood, Texas, took first place in Division II monochrome for “Dress Shop,” second in animals for “Painted Birds” and third in people for “American Woman.”

Lt. Col. Mark Bonica of Fort Sam Houston, Texas, took second in Division I still life with “Reflections in Soap,” third in monochrome with “… and We All Fall Down” and received an honorable mention in military life with “Free Gift When You Join Today.”

Staff Sgt. Brandon Quarterman of Fort Bliss, Texas, won the Division I popular vote contest for “Reaching Perfection,” which topped the still life category.

Military Families share golf memories at Tiger Woods tournament 090702

By Rob McIlvaine
FMWRC Public Affairs

The 2009 AT&T National at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md., brings golf’s finest stars to the nation’s capital while raising funds for the Tiger Woods Foundation and paying tribute to the Armed Forces. The top 120 PGA Tour professionals from around the world are competing for million in prize money.

It takes place from June 30 through Monday, July 5, and is hosted by Tiger Woods.

“I’ve dabbled in golf for a couple of years, but the chance to get out here to see possibly the greatest golfer of all time is thrilling for us,” said Col. Greg Linberis, who started his career in special forces with the National Guard.

His son, Zachary, who joins the U.S. Army Band next year after college graduation, agreed.
“I have a job at the golf course in Sterling and get the chance to play a little more often,” Zachary said. “Watching Tiger Woods and even Tony Romo is inspiring for us.”

The line-up includes newly crowned U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, defending champion Anthony Kim, three-time major winner Vijay Singh, former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk, Sean O’Hair, and former Masters champion Mike Weir. Each are competing for the winner’s check of .8 million.

Lt. Cmdr. Larry Hand retired from the Navy this past January after serving 25 years, the last 15 on board submarines.

He and his wife, Rhonda, came out to watch Tiger and the other professionals for the entire week, staying at a hotel in Bethesda.

“This is a great tournament for the military. After watching it on TV the past two years, it’s wonderful we finally have the chance to walk with these great athletes,” Hand said.

“I didn’t get the free tickets Tiger offered. I just went online and ordered the whole week’s worth so we could spend the 4th of July weekend together and watch how golf is really played,” Hand said.

Tournament officials distributed 30,000 complimentary tickets to the U.S. military. The tickets were distributed by the Pentagon’s Army ITT/ITR office on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets were available for all active duty, reserve, retired, and DoD civilian personnel.

Military Families also were able to sign up online for the chance to meet Tiger.

“We found out we won the contest to meet Tiger about a month ago,” Brad Morris happily announced.

Morris, now retired from the Virginia National Guard, spent 2004 in Iraq.

“We were told they had record sales so the odds of us winning had to be pretty great,” Morris said.

He and wife, Lisa, were treated with many amenities.

“Because we live so close, rather than the plane ride that was part of the winnings, a car was sent to pick us up and drop us off at a Bethesda hotel for three days,” Lisa said.

“I’ve been playing golf for 25 years, but this has to be the most fun we’ve had on a golf course thanks to the Tiger Woods Foundation,” Morris said.

Besides the car ride and the hotel, they also received a Clubhouse pass and attended the Pairings Party where the amateur and professional players are paired up for the tourney.

“What Tiger and his Foundation are doing for the military, and especially our wounded warriors, is really something. We think it’s incredible when celebrities, or anybody for that matter, do anything for our soldiers who are following orders into harm’s way,” Morris said.

Col. Ernest Lockrow, currently Chief of Integrated Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Walter Reed Medical Center, has spent the last 32 years in the military.

“I began my military career as an E-1 in 1976 and then went to West Point. I really like to watch the game of golf so I come out here every year,” Lockrow said.

“All of us very much appreciate what Tiger has done to honor the military. That’s the other reason I like to come out here and what a nice day it is,” Lockrow said.

Greg Kidd, retired from the Army since 1995, caddies part time at Congressional Country Club.
Now a top-rated caddie, Kidd has caddied for many pros and also Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, President Gerald Ford and President Bill Clinton.

“I’ve been coming out here, off and on, since 1972. It’s a good feeling to be part of this tournament,” Kidd said.

Military service members also had the chance to volunteer to help out during the week of the tournament. One of the jobs was to act as starter – a person who announces the players, at each tee.

Staff Sgt. Nick Stanisci with the National Guard Bureau in Arlington is a budget analyst for the recruiting command. But Wednesday, both pros and amateurs looked for him to announce them at the 11th Tee.

“An email was sent out asking for volunteers so here I am. This is my first opportunity for this event,” he said.

A golfer with a handicap of 22, Stanisci understands the game’s triumphs and pitfalls.

“The sound of Tiger hitting the ball…it’s rare to hear the loud crack as he compresses the ball and hits it down the fairway. But not every day can be your best no matter how great you are.

Tiger was the only one so far who put the ball in the water at hole 10,” Stanisci said with a smile on his face.

The military Families had the chance to get some rest from the day’s events at the Lockheed Martin Military Pavilion. Located between the third green and the fourth tee, the pavilion was open to all military ticket holders and provided a VIP experience which included snacks, beverages and a prime viewing area.

Antonio Renovales and his extended Family were taking in the sights underneath an umbrella outside the pavilion.

Renovales, of Puerto Rico, served five years in the U.S. Navy during Korea. His daughter, Norma, retired from the Air Force Reserves after serving 24 years. His son-in-law, Staff Sgt. Frankie Alvarez, retired from the Army after spending 28 “glorious” years in service to his country.

Even though the MWR office was all out of tickets, they were told to go over and show their IDs to be let in.

“We had no problems,” Alvarez said.

Although no one else in his Family, plays golf, Frankie and his son, Alejandro, 17, both play the game.

“We really wanted to see Tiger play but we also appreciate how he supports the military. There’s no better way than giving away tickets, but he does so much more. He gives a lot of his time and earnings to help others,” Alvarez said.

Programs developed and supported by the Tiger Woods Foundation, begun in 1996, all share a similar mission of empowering young people to dream big and set specific goals to achieve their dreams. Programs of the foundation include the Tiger Woods Learning Center, an education facility located in Orange County, Calif., Tiger’s Action Plan, a nationwide character development program, and the Earl Woods Scholarship Fund, a program celebrating Earl Woods’ lifelong dedication to helping young people achieve their dreams.

I'm not really sure why I have not put this up yet, as it is one of my favorite photos. A male leopard, presumably an older one, makes his way through the thorny brush in Kruger National Park, South Africa. We followed this leopard for about 45 minutes until we decided it was a good time to leave him to his much wanted solitude.

Shane Warne Spin King Gets Hot Wheels In Sin City Sydney, By Eva Rinaldi

Shane Warne aka 'The Spin King', continues to race ahead of the pack and reinvent himself, be it on Australian or European soil.

He's endorsed video and audio companies, online poker, and now toys (no, not dolls), cars... Hot Wheels cars from Mattel to be exact.

Today he appeared at a press conference in Surry Hills, Sydney, to tell us all about what he sees in Hot Wheels.

On the surface Warne looks to be a pretty good match. He loves his cars (owning a number of real sports cars in his private collection), is known for his fast women (now just one - lucky Liz), who has him in good shape thanks to the "Liz Effect", as Warnie puts it, and who knows what else is in the pipeline. Young men around the world may do well to note that Mr Warne has settled down now with the one lovely lady now and that commitment to the one lass can be a very good thing.

A couple of whispers overheard at today's presser went something like "Doesn't Mattel also do Barbie and Ken dolls (TM)." For the record there was nothing on Ken or Barbie.

The Hot Wheels 'Spin King' has supposed to be a bit of a secret, but we suspect that was all part of the media and marketing plan. You know, make something a secret, so it gets written and talked about. If that's the case, Mattel and Team Warnie have done their jobs well. Warne is understood to have "collaborated" with Mattel's Hot Wheels for about 6 months, and the financial terms of the deal are not being released, at least at this stage. It must be good, since Warne and his management are used to cranking deals with online poker brands and the like, and those don't come cheap.

'The Spin King' signature range designed by Australian sports stars sure looks hot (if your into toy cars).

This is not the virgin car deal for Mr Warne. Last year Warnie was named Lamborghini's Australian ambassador and gifted a 0,000 Murcielago as a "long-term loan car", and a couple of Lambos' were seen racing around East Sydney earlier today, so perhaps he was driving one of them. You can bet Warnie and Liz's kids are doing to have a ball of a time playing with all the toys they will be gifted by Mattel and Hot Wheels.

Warnie's press statements included something along the lines of "I've always has a passion for cars. I used to play with Hot Wheels cars as a kid, so when they offered me the chance to design my own, I jumped at it". Containing his excitement he also shared "I loved every minute of the design process and working with the team at hot Wheels was great fun. The 'Spin King' is a fusion between all of my favorite fast cars and its been great seeing my vision come to life". To Australian press (and public) he had an equally important message: "When Liz and I settle down in Melbourne please respect our privacy and don't throw rocks at our place at 2am in the morning. I've told Liz Melbourne is beautiful".

It was a hot looking brochure and media kit, but sadly no Hot Wheels car in the pack, but Christmas is coming, so here's hoping.

Thanks for the great photos Warnie. Sydney is the quick and the dead, and we did our best, so we're hoping you like them.

Verdict: Shane Warne and Mattel's Hot Wheels gets the green light. They are to hit stores in March 2012, and we're told they are worth the wait. Catch them if you can.

Dragon Man's Motorsports.
dragon image
This past weekend I took my son to a pace just outside of Colorado Springs called Dragon Man's. This is a crazy place with paint ball, 35 acre motocross track, several rifle ranges and one of the largest private war museums in the US.

My goal for the day was to get in some practice with the SB-900 and see what it could do in the middle of the day with bright sunlight.

This was shot with the SB-900 in the hot shoe and the D700 hand-held at about 30 yards form the my son. I boosted the EV on the D700 by 1/3 stop, the SB-900 by 1 full stop and set the SB-900 zoom to manual at 200mm.

More of the days shooting can be seen here:

A variation on my previous...I extracted a cracked texture from a very famous old painting, cloned out the power lines, and added more orange.

For the romantics...

Brooklyn, NY. Autumn 2006.

Yes, I realize the cliche...elongated view down a street...We've seen it all a billion times...This particular one I had to add because of how the mist in the air gave the light a soft, ethereal quality. The silhouette could be anyone...just give her a story. This also felt to me like the cover of a really good LP from the 70's from a Canadian singer that no-one's heard of.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's research vessel Knorr is seen docked on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, in Woods Hole, Mass. Knorr is scheduled to depart on Sept. 6 to take part in the Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study (SPURS). The NASA-sponsored expedition will sail to the North Atlantic's saltiest spot to get a detailed, 3-D picture of how salt content fluctuates in the ocean's upper layers and how these variations are related to shifts in rainfall patterns around the planet. The Chicago Theological Seminary Building - The Milton Friedman Institute // Romancing the Stone

Stone and light. The former home of the Chicago Theological Seminary, now home to the Milton Friedman Institute, is a favorite building of mine. Here are a few posts with some more images from this Gothic marvel..Last November, I returned to the city of broad shoulders to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with my family. Having an afternoon to spare, my wife and I met with friends on the campus of the University of Chicago and I took few photographs with my good friend Matt.I convinced him to return to the great limestone cavern of the Chicago Theological Seminary Building. We spent some few happy moments taking in the cold, damp and empty hallways and catching up.There's something about these walls that draws me in whenever I'm near. Perhaps it's the echo of steps upon the worn and weathered staircase, bathed in tungsten light; or perhaps it's the smell of many a word wafting from the underground, labyrinthine bookshelves that line one of the last and greatest independent booksellers in the country; or maybe it's the architect's expression of love for a style long extinct, wrought in ribbons of amber light clinging to the ribs of the close and stoney vault.I had long admired the beautiful and thoroughly abandoned courtyard of the seminary. The flagstones were purple and blue with the damp of the rainstorm and I decided to open one of thegreat leaded glass doors that line the cloister and step out into the grey of a gathering storm.I am going to be leading an awesome photography workshop here on The University of Chicago campus on Saturday, May 26th at 8 AM until 12 noon. I have 10 folks confirmed and registered and another few who have expressed interest. This leaves room for you if you are so inclined. We have a classroom in the awesome Logan Center for the Arts where we will begin by sharing a few thoughts on why great images "work."Then we'll do a few exercises and talk about a few tricks to keep the mind sharp and the eye (and camera!) focused. Then we will get onto the meat of the workshop and take a walking tour of several buildings of immense beauty, focusing on making successful compositions using natural light and the architecture. After shooting for about a few hours we will return to the Logan Center and get into post-processing. I am going to teach the participants exactly how to get the most from their images and generate the beautiful effects you see in my images.Price is 0 - drop a comment or an email to get registered!
