Nice Earth Image photos

A few nice earth image images I found:

Sunglint Over South America (NASA, International Space Station, 05/15/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
Sunglint and clouds off Western South America are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 31 crew member on the International Space Station. The setting sun highlights cloud patterns above the Pacific Ocean, as well as the ocean surface itself in this impressive image. The space station was located over the Andes Mountains of central Chile at the time. The view is looking towards the Pacific Ocean and the sun setting in the west (towards lower left). Light from the setting sun reflects off the water surface towards the observer on the space station and creates a mirror-like appearance—a phenomenon known as sunglint. Bands of relatively low altitude cumulus clouds appear much like a flotilla of ships with their west-facing sides illuminated by the waning sunlight and the rest in shadow (center). Due to the low sun angle, they cast long and deep shadows over large swaths of the ocean surface. Given the short camera lens used, an individual cloud shadow may extend for miles. Light gray clouds at upper right appear to be at a higher altitude. The cloud cover is likely a remnant of a frontal system that moved inland over South America from the Pacific a day or two prior to the time the image was taken.

Salar de Coipasa, Bolivia (NASA, International Space Station, 09/20/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
Salar de Coipasa, Bolivia is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 33 crew member on the International Space Station. The Salar de Coipasa, located in the Altiplano region of western Bolivia, covers an area of approximately 2,500 square kilometers. The word "salar" describes arid closed basins in which evaporation of mineral-rich waters leads to the formation of thick, flat-laying salt deposits. Salar de Coipasa is located to the southwest of the saline Lake Poopo and northwest of the largest salt flat in the world, Salar de Uyuni. At Coipasa, a crust composed of halite—common table salt—provides the brilliant white coloration characteristic of the Altiplano salars (right). While the environment of Salar de Coipasa is arid, it does receive constant water from the Lauca River flowing from the north; this feeds Lake (Lago) Coipasa that fills the northern end of the basin with shallow water (center). However, the water flow can drop off sharply during periods of drought. The waters of Lake Coipasa, and the white salt crust of the salar, also serve to highlight dark river sediments flowing into the basin along the northeastern shore. Dark volcanic rocks contrast sharply with the surrounding salt crust at right. While the western Andes Mountains contain many active volcanoes, the nearby Tata Sabaya volcano has not been historically active.

This is a night shot of the headlight of a Honda motorcycle, taken in the dark, handheld. Of course without a tripod it was too blurred to do justice with the reflected light and colors, so I used Photoshop to bring out the patterns here as an abstract, painterly view. It's best viewed in the original size for the details.

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

Amanda Palmer Eyes

[Buy prints of my work at ImageKind, or visit my website: David Lindes Photography.]

I had the privilege last night to meet Amanda Palmer, of the Dresden Dolls, after their show. Even better, she allowed me to take close-up pictures of her face.

I hope one day to perhaps get another chance at that, sometime when she and I are both more prepared for it (i.e. she's not in just-finished-a-show state, and we're in more of a studio type environment, and I'm more practiced at facial close-ups).

Still, I have something, which is a lot, because I've been thinking her eybrow makeup is the coolest thing ever for quite a long time (i.e. since I first saw it in a picture or video or whatever).

This here is an attempt at making a fairly clinical-looking, uncool photo of such cool eyes and eyebrows look a bit better.

There's just one source image here, but with several curves adjustment layers, each partially masked out, and an additional layer of just white, to get some unwanted darkness from creeping in on the sides.

Amanda, if you read this: thank you very much for allowing me to photograph you -- and for an awesome show, in general. Whether or not I ever get another chance at shooting your eyes and eyebrows, I hope you like this shot.

(Pics of Brian's eyes may be coming too...)
