"Beautiful Beasts" Exhibit at the Sam Noble Museum

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and I recently organized an exhibit called "Beautiful Beasts: The Unseen life of Oklahoma Spiders and Insects" which features several large-scale prints of my macrophotographs. The exhibit layout and printing turned out fantastic and I am immensely proud of everyone who helped put it together.
The museum is located in Norman, Oklahoma and the exhibit runs until September 8th, 2013. Also worth noting - my girlfriend, Kathleen Neeley did several illustrations (many of salticids!) for the didactic panels in this exhibit - more information on her illustration/artwork can be found here: www.kinkprints.com
The exhibit is definitely worth visiting if just for the giant inflatable Phidippus mystaceus!

Paloma Blanco pinta sobre imágenes de revistas pornográficas cambiando las situaciones sexuales por otras escenas cotidianas como cocinar, comer, ver la tele, cantar, bailar, leer, hacer deporte, etc. Pero conservando las mismas caras de éxtasis de las fotografías originales y los mismos textos eróticos que las acompañaban.
En el 2006 la editorial vasca Belleza Infinita ( www.bellezainfinita.org ) publicó un libro con toda la obra utilizando el mismo formato, papel y encuadernación que las revistas pornográficas.
En esta exposición se podrán ver obras del libro y obra nueva inédita.

The artist Paloma Blanco has painted over images from pornografic magazines, changing the sexual situations for other every day scenes such as cooking, eating, watching TV, singing, dancing, doing sports, etc. The artwork was published by Belleza Infinita ( www.bellezainfinita.org ) in 2006 and now is showing old and new pieces at Duduá (c/Rosic 6 Barcelona, Spain www.duduadudua.com , duduadudua.blogspot.com)

hackNY spring 2013 student hackathon

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.
Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

3D "Peaks" tessellation technique, in progress

Working on developing a method for folding three dimensional mountain peaks, that take on an inverted "V" shape. After some thinking on the problem I came up with a fold structure that locks this into place- not vertical sides, but at a sharp angle, so it makes actual 3d structures.
This particular example is folded in a honeycomb style, but really it could be made in almost any shape. I need to play with this further and see what other intersections I can fold in this manner to expand the concept.
This folding idea and general technique came from thinking about some of Ron Resch's designs, and his 3d structure methodology.
Also have some questions on the twist-lock for the reverse side, will share some photos of that once I do the wet shaping of this elephant hide.
(I can see now why Joel and Melisande like using elephant hide so much for these sorts of 3d tessellations. the feel and weight of the paper is particularly enjoyable to work with.)

Constrains on space and information absent from the previous workspace settings: during interview, Rosa revealed that the rest of the information artefacts (papers, reports, previous projects, old documents, ...) where at her home, inside boxes, awaiting to be arranged, when she has the time.
Personal mobile computer with mobile internet access (Rosa expenses) and USB disk (for easy information mobility): predictability and privacy of information (objects and environment) on self own computer, moved around everyday with owner.
Computer provided by the organization: limitations in internet connection due to lack of telephone socket and insufficient communication lines.
Limited use of printer - constraints due to workspace physical move (network printer is not configured to include the arrival of the new elements).

September 18, 2012 (Tuesday) - I often print documents to get ready for my classes. The printer often sits here when I should be carrying it to the shelf and the bedroom when finished each time. I don't want a wifi one as I'd get less exercise.
In July of 2005 when I joined Flickr, I expanded my online presence by uploading a DAILY image to this special photo set. Ever since, I've faithfully added one per day. Doing this provides a direct record of my personal experiences. Of course, I started daily blogging in the fall of 2003 and my eJournal and images entries continue every single day as well.
